(06.11.09) Peres' offer: State with temporary borders "Basically, we can use the second stage of the Road Map – a Palestinian state with temporary borders, ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF JEHOVAH, THE GAZA STRIP IS THE STATE OF THE PALESTINIANS WITH ITS BORDERS. THOSE BORDERS ARE ONLY TEMPORARY, BECAUSE AS THE WORD OF JEHOVAH IMPLIES, THE PALESTINIANS WILL NEVER CEASE THEIR HOSTILITY TOWARDS ISRAEL, WHO THEREFORE HAS TO INVADE THE PALESTINIAN STATE IN THE GAZA STRIP. Karim ,   Bethlehem   (06.11.09)
...So long as it is in Israel. That is, behind agreed-upon borders. Who are we to dictate jews can't have sex anyway? Of course, we all know that the quintupling of settler population since '91 was also due to illegal immigration and violation of article 49 of the geneva convention. so who exactly are you kidding? Nobody said you can't have an erection. Just have it inside your house, not in my house!
7. temporary????????????
ghostq   (06.11.09)
he beter create a state in Second Life web than make state with temporary borders, it's the most idiotic thing I have ever heard, it will lead to futur war on border lines between Israel and the pali state witch wasn't created yet, y creat early conditions for futur war, where is the logic in that? Mr. Peres if I was your grandchild I would have put you in a nersing home long time ago.

It cannot be a violation as the borders are not set. In fact, 'borders' is the wrong word. The lines of '67, or rather '48 (where the Arabs seem to hope to turn back the clock) as ARMISTICE LINES, and became such at ARAB insistence. The Arabs at that time didn't want a define border as they figured on being able to beat Israel in a future war and thus not have to worry about pesky things such as internationally defined borders. The armistice line wont be a border until the 'warring parties' agree on where the border is, so while you may not like the building over the 'Green Line', it's not illegal until a border is actually agreed upon.

10. Israel, Palestine & Ireland
Philip ,   Dublin, Ireland   (06.11.09)
Im from Ireland. We hear a lot about the Israel/Palestinian conflict in our media over. Most people in Ireland are sympathetic to the Palestinian cause and believe that Israel is a bully that terrorises the poor Palestinian people who only fire their rockets out of desperation as they have been stripped of their dignity by an over powerfull and overbearing Israeli military. They have nothing and feel the only thing they can do is to strike back at Israel somehow. I do not fully agree with this popular opinion. I believe that the Palestinians must be given a state of their own which will include the Gaza Strip, The West Bank and half of Jeruselham. Once they officially have their Palestine nation the must never ever attack Israel again. Israeli's are determined to never allow a Palestine state and this is where they are wrong but the palestinians are also wrong the way they behave towards Israel. There was once a similar conflict on my island of ireland bit it is completely resolved now and there is absolute peace. Peace only became possible when both sides decided to lower their weapons and really sit down and talk to each other and show mutual respect. Peace came not long after this. When the Palestinians strike, Israel strikes back with 100 times the force. This solves nothing. I believe Israel and the Palestinians could really learn a lot from the irish peace process. The above is only my own personal opinion and I mean to offend nobody. I think Israel is a very interesting place and will visit there some day when it becomes more stable which i believe eventually will happen.

J K ,   NYC, USA   (06.11.09)
Some other questions to ponder: 1) Why was there not 'Palestinian' clamoring for a state between '48 and '67 when Jordan and Egypt were in charge? 2) Why was a 'Palestinian' National Movement founded back in 1964, a full 3 years before Israel held any of the territories presently purported to be 'occupied'. 3) Why do 'Palestinians' really deserve a state? The territory passed from the Ottoman Turks to the British to Egyptian/Jordanian control and finally to Israel when the Arab countries just couldn't stay away from trying to kill Israel? The Kurds have a much better claim to a state than you.
13. #10in theory
Lisa   (06.11.09)
actually Philip- if you have been following the news- in the past 5 or so years at all: they already HAVE it..... your sympathy is recommendable, but a bit useless. What have the Palestinians DONE with the Ghaza strip- I mean other than destroyed what the Israeli settlers have built over many years? Have you noticed that Israel does not strike back willy nilly? Is 8 years of daily rocket attacks on civilians and not striking back not showing a lot of patience? Whenever Israel makes an offer, Hamas, or the PLo or whoever has been in charge veto the offer and continue terrorist attacks. Maybe you need to read up on history the get a clearer picture of what REALLY has happened in the area. The media in England/Ireland is pretty biased and influenced by Muslim opinions.- I am sure it is difficult to get a neutral and fair to all article and opinion. I live in Switzerland/Spain and I know you need to shop for a paper and TV channel that is not influenced.... As for sitting down and talking- how many times have they 'talked'- hundreds of times- and every time Hamas etc. back out at the last minute with some lame excuse. Israel is the only democratic country in the Middle East with a high standard of living, unfortunately this also creates a lot of jealousy among the basket cases in the area. Instead of learning and imitating, they want to destroy. So, while you mean well- your sympathy should be with Israel not with Palestinians. The Irish process is still in the works is it? How long did it take you? And that was two Christian religions, not Judaism and Islam. I am not Jewesh by the way- so you could say I am neutral. You need to know about the history of the area, and BOTH sides of the story, LOL.

16. Bibi will lose support of the army!
Raphy ,   Montreal   (06.11.09)
Do you think that Bibi will have support of the army to forcibly remove 100,000 + Jews from the land where their fore-fathers are buried? It will never happen! Bibi will lose the support of the army in such a case and we will take back what is ours by right! Bibi, if you are not strong enough, you will lose power. Long live the settlers!
17. Game is over, Palestine is a state

18. Temporary borders?
leo ,   usa   (06.11.09)
And then what, another war or wars over permanent borders? I understand that in this case "temporary" or "permanent" are just semantics, but why even give an idea that you can be pushed?
19. It started with the Oslo Agreements …
Dave Ronen ,   Haifa   (06.11.09)
After the horrible mistakes he commited as a result of his total lack of vision, Peres should keep away of politics and Media. Only a peace process with the acceptance by the Arabs to be resettled in other Arab countries had a chance to bring peace to the region. Financial compensations would be the main reason for the Arabs to accept their resettlement. The best solution for the Arabs would be to leave the borders of “greater Israel,” so that Israel could then annex the West Bank and perhaps Gaza. Advancing this solution, daily, at any occasion, might creat a new perception and bring peace. Any different solution presents a risk of an endless war. For more details : http://xrl.us/bjcgx

After 16 years the Godfather of Oslo accord and Nobel peace prize winner finally has remembered that a Palestinian state needs borders and guess what temporary ones.
23. To # 16
Ann   (06.11.09)
Israel's illegal settlements on Occupied Palestinian territory, are not made legal simply because the PM's office (of the occupying state of Israel) gives the OK to build on top of Palestinian homes and land that it has seized.
24. #17 there will never be a Palestinian State
Raphy ,   Montreal   (06.11.09)
The people if Israel have elected a right wing leader and you will never have your "False"tinian state! How would you like it if Israel imposed its will on Ireland? Bug off please!
25. #16
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (06.11.09)
You have it wrong. "Occupied Palestinian Territory" can only refer to what is now called Jordan, which was stolen by the British Imperial Forces and given to their Arab allies. As for illegal settlement, you must be referring to the Arabs (mostly Muslims) from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Iraq who illegally immigrated to the Mandatory territories when they were controlled by the British Imperial Forces. The illegal land theft is not made legal because you or anyone else says so.
26. Finally, a state for Palestine ( OVERDUE)
Sue ,   England   (06.11.09)
It should have occurred earlier but justice for the Palestinians has finally come.
27. # 24 Raphy Montreal for good
Ann ,   Ireland   (06.11.09)
You should stay in Montreal and so on ... nothing would be imposed in Palestine since 1917
28. # 23
J K ,   NYC, USA   (06.11.09)
You obviously didn't read my posting in #8. If you REALLY want to be accurate about it, the only ones Israel should be negotiating with are Jordan and Egypt, the last parties who had possession of the territories in question. Since they were not recognized as legitimate government, the last government to hold any sovereignty was the UK and covering that was the Mandate of the League of Nations. As such, it's not clear the 'Palestinians' deserve a state since they never were even a people until 1964. By their own admission before then, they saw themselves as Southern Syrians. Who actually will wind up with what is not clear. Nothing is illegal until the borders, whatever they may be, are decided upon. But I guess it's easier to scream catch phrases.
29. TO # 10, Philip from Dublin
DAVID ,   HERZLIA,ISRAEL   (06.11.09)
Philip, Interesting comments. Come for a visit to Israel, I will be more than glad to show you around the whole country, you are welcome to see anything you want , and you will be able to make your own conclusion. Let me know when you are planning to come. ( not in summer please, !! too hot !!!)
30. Temporary border?
Sarah ,   New York City, USA   (06.11.09)
How many member states of the European Union have temporary borders? Right. Exactly. None. Of course, the day that Spain works out a temporary border arrangement with the Basque people, Israel will sit up and take notice. When Spain consents to an independent Basque state, Israel might pay some attention. Unless and until -- nada.
