1. Very de-based understanding of kashrut

2. CODS WALLOP
ghostq   (07.01.09)
it because Jewish women make the men miserble, Kosher got nothing to do with it, and Organic is not necessarily means Kosher, so don't get your hopes up.
3. The linkage between kosher & organic seems a bit............
Cameron ,   USA   (07.01.09)
fanciful overkill. Organic is fine, but I'm always amazed how much other baggage is read, and linked, into it the last few years. An end, in, and of, itself? I'll settle for just basic common sense in matters of diet.
4. Yes, anybody can have own definition what is kosher
M ,   tlv   (07.01.09)
I personally think that any kind of sushi is kosher. But falafel is not.

Ypip ,   Canada   (07.01.09)
and keep your mouth shut, you'd manage to keep your blood pressure down....(wink, wink)
9. in israels dark cities jews have lost touch with what kosher
yaqov ,   jer is   (07.01.09)

I was gonna say : okey ! what doctors do in operation room ? they cut and repair right ? JEWS WORK WITH FOODS AS DOCTORS WORK WITH HUMAN BODY. GUYS ! IF YOU STILL DIDNT GET THE POINT ! ITS YOUR FAULT NOT MINE. jerks ! dont undertand english :) no I wont talk hebrew. no.
11. FINALLY! Someone speaks the truth
5th generation ,   Israel   (07.01.09)
Kashrut has been hijacked almost entirely, and no longer has anything to do with health.
12. Sounds more like New Age than Kosher to me.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (07.01.09)
And like much of the New Age material, it's all a wishy-washy mashup of various European superstitions, ancient pagan religions the New-Agers pretend to understand and so on... The has apparently decided to merge with the New Age as part of its modernization program. Oh well, at least they're not talking about The Power of Crystals...
13. What does the black woman rabbi opine?
Merritt Showanix   (07.01.09)
We must have her opinion, it's so fashionable. What is certain is, it was poverty and scrimping which caused the hole in the bagel, to save dough - now that we are prosperous the bagel is an anachronism - I announce the "no more holes" movement (and that goes for the black woman rabbi too - no more holes please).
14. From somone who eats treif this is funny
Ilan ,   Ariel   (07.01.09)
I guess when she since was visiting, eating at and reviewing treif restaurants she has undergone some sort of financially inspired conversion. Or maybe her bizarre redefinition of what is kosher and her watery broth thin knowledge of Jewish history have something to do with this. Another reality check. About a 100 years ago everyone ate organic as there were no synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. So even moon white Ashkenazim ate natural food. What a maroon (coconut or otherwise)
15. Half cooked Judaism
me and my two cents   (07.01.09)
What revelation did they receive that NOW we must all be vegetarian? The plain meaning of Torah is there is no going back to Eden, and we must deal with what we've got now. A huge amount of space is dedicated to animal sacrifice that was the staple diet of the Kohanim. For not sacrificial meat, the sages deduced from the wording of "from your flocks" that one is to learn derech eretz.... not to be a carnivorous glutton, and the length of the shechita, the salting, the removal of forbidden fat and nerves was to put obstacles in the way of "casual" meat consumption. Not that an occasional corned beef sandwitch is a philosophical no-no. Either meat consumption in a spiritual framework, or a home labor intensive framework is safe, Its the 'fast food' at the meat market that violates the concept. That is true kosher.
16. baseless psychobabble
izzy d   (07.01.09)
simply ridicules and selective understanding of jewish history. the inhabitants of the garden of eden were not jewish. the jewish relationship with god was codified in the torah that details exactly what MEAT is kosher and what MEAT isn't. And for a woman rabbi to tell me that jews have lost a connection to their traditional roots, well thats just laughable. new age religion psychobabble is what it is. cruelty to animals implies the causing of unnecessary pain to animals. instead kashrut is imbued with the need to end an animals life as painlessly as possible. If killing animals is murder well i just saw a cat kill a rat and eat it, should i call the police and report the cat? will they initiate legal proceedings against the cat, will placing the cat in a jail cell be condemned as cruel? This is simply a manifestation of celebrating a cultural heritage (Judaism) with enlightenment (individual rights).
17. Thank you for a sensitive intelligent article
Janet Nathanson ,   Jerusalem   (07.01.09)
What a pleasure to read the honest truth - that we can't fool Mother Nature, that eating with wisdom and concern for all of G-d's creatures is the true spirit of Judaism. And no. 13 your comments are racist and sexist, stiff-necked and hollow.
18. amusing! I will eat what I like not what u tell me! :)
(07.01.09)
What we have here is a tight assed Fascist Hippie outlook (Only Organic is Good!) attempting to win the valuable prize (Orthodox money) by preaching that "Organic is the true Kosher!" At best the view is insecure and ill founded, At worse it is a seriously cynical ploy to part the trendy Orthodox from their money! I just have one question...what did the nice ladies in the photographs accompanying this article eat as children? They don't look like people who grew up on Organic food!
19. Some of the so-called kosher meat isn't exactly healthy..
Israelit ,   Israel   (07.01.09)
Most kosher meats have been injected with 10% water, with a bit of phospates thrown in for good measure. As an Ola Hadasha I purchased some of that stuff, and wound up throwing it out. My family doesn't need to eat meat saturated with poison, and filled with water as make-weight. Look at the labels and ask your butchers as to what they're selling.
20. kosher food
Juda ,   Israël   (07.01.09)
You never understood what the essence of kosher meant
21. lol #10 LMFAO, relax and have organic burekas,
ghostq   (07.01.09)
and save me some.
22. to #11 I think so 2.

23. If it's cruel, it's not kosher
Offended reader   (07.01.09)
Is it kosher ? If food comes from plants and trees raised on stolen Palestinian land while Palestinina farmers being attacked by land thieves and war criminals settlers and IDF, their olive trees being burned, their people being shot at, put in jail and under barbaric siege! This is Judaism.
24. An insect is organic too
A common fly ,   IS   (07.01.09)
25. All food is organic
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (07.01.09)
Unless you eat rocks. Everything edible is organic. Kashrut is a set of laws that Jews follow concerning the preparation of food. There is nothing about this "organic" craze that contradicts or overrides the laws of Kashrut.
26. No. 16 izzy d
NYC Girl   (07.01.09)
The question is whether or not the cat was Jewish.
27. #18: & up to us taxpayers will pay your medical bills?
Global Citizen ,   Israel & USA   (07.02.09)
that might be totally avoidable? You might think you're clever and revolutionary, but you sound like a chainsmoking twit who doesn't know how your Wonder bread is buttered.
28. #27 now, now. what's up w/personal attack?
#18   (07.02.09)
1. I don't smoke 2. I pay my own medical bills 3. what's Wonder bread? 4. I know I got it right because instead of coming back on some bright eyed policy position disagreement stance you went straight for the personal attack!!! so thanks for the compliment! 5. Global Citizen? Really and so then what's up with that provincial bringing up of the Wonder bread! Was it involved in "building (ur) strong body in 12 different ways"? Ah! that was amusing! indeed!

30. Organic???
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.03.09)
I'm 71 years old, haven't seen a doctor in 30 years, weigh the same as I did at 20 and I only wonder how many more wrinkles I'd have, if it weren't for those preservatives. Aside from boiled okra never finding its way onto my plate, the determining factor of what I do and don't eat is this: Does it have instructions for the microwave? Oh, and I don't care how and where they grow those coffee beans.
