1. YES !!!.
ORAO STRANKA. ,   TSARIGRAD U SRBIA.   (07.05.09)
Obama is only pro-Israel when it fits in to his view of America’s national interests which now seem to be on a definite collision path with Israel’s vital security concerns. And as Lord Palmerston, a former British Prime Minister, said, “Nations have no permanent friends or enemies, just permanent interests”. YES NATIONS DO NOT HAVE MORAL. IF NETANYAHU CAVES HE MAY EVEN FALL. Orao.
2. And what of the Arab/Muslim narrative?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (07.05.09)
That Obama is pursuing what he deems in US interests (however mistaken) is but one factor explaining his foreign policy. His imbibing of an anti-colonial mindset (with America cast as one of those "colonials") from his left-wing mentors is another. And then there's the matter of the Arab/Muslim narrative. Without buying into the "Obama is a secret Muslim" nonsense, it's clear that his family background and early experience in Indonesia has left him more sympathetic to Muslims than past presidents. Beyond the years listening to Wright's rantings, he no doubt took seriously the Arab narrative offered by Said, Khalidi and Abulima. And together, they found expression in his Cairo speech - the overstatement of Islamic contributions, the mythic Islamic "tolerance", persecution (rather than historic yearnings) as driving force behind Zionism, the Palestinian conflict as the key to a stable Middle East and relations with the West. etc.
3. I am a frequent critic of Brakman, but his article....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (07.05.09)
is very well written and 100% on target. We have to do what we have to do and the US has to do what they have to do. When they align, great. But when they don't, we still are in control of our own destiny vis a vie Iran.
4. Levi...it is delusional to think that the Obama
Le' Faux Jew ,   US   (07.05.09)
plan has the best US interest at heart? I don't think any of us can really think that Obama has the US intererest at heart. He is a globalist.
5. American Jewry
Hannah ,   Eilat   (07.05.09)
Hussein is deceitful. He did not dare to tell AIPAC last year, that it was his explicit intention to try and force Israel into freezing settlements in Samaria and Judea. I regret having to say, that the Amerian jewry were as spellbound by Hussein as the gullible Americans. Let's hope that Israel does not pay the price for their stupidity.
6. double standards
Jay ,   NYS   (07.06.09)
"The immediate adoption of a settlements freeze by Israel, more than any other action, could create the confidence needed for wider participation in these talks. Further settlement activity is in no way necessary for the security of Israel." -- President Ronald Reagan, Sept. 1, 1982 My position is that the foreign policy of the United States says we do not believe there should be new settlements in the West Bank or in East Jerusalem. And I will conduct that policy as if it's firm, which it is." President George Bush March 3, 1990 "Israeli settlement activity in occupied territories must stop, and the occupation must end through withdrawal to secure and recognized boundaries, consistent with United Nations Resolutions 242 and 338." -- President George W. Bush, April 4, 2002 Obama isn't saying anything different than these prior presidents. The only difference is that he isn't a Republican. When these same doctrines came out of their mouths, you all were silent, hypocrites.
7. TALKBACK NUMBER 6.
ORAO STRANKA. ,   TSARIGRAD U SRBIA.   (07.06.09)
"The immediate adoption of a settlements freeze by Israel, more than any other action, could create the confidence needed for wider participation in these talks SURE THING !!!. ISRAEL SHALL PAY THE PRIZE FOR THE POSSIBILITY FOR ( could create the confidence needed) THE US TO FURTHER NEGOTIATION TALKS, TO THE POLITICAL SUCCES OF US IN THESE TALKS. GO TO - !!!. Orao.
8. Silly article
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (07.07.09)
Of course Obama is looking out for America's interests first. He wasn't elected President of Israel. Yet, Rabbi, what is your solution? To continue the colonization of Palestinian land? To move towards a one-state solution? An apartheid state? Transfer or extermination of the indigenous population? The problem, rabbi , is that you don't use the brains god has given you. Instead if whining about how Obama doesn't have your interests as his primary goal, what is your solution? Or is whining, like most of these talkbackers, sufficient ?
9. To #8
Yehuda ,   Jerusalem,Israel   (07.07.09)
Everything you wrote can be argued with but I don't have much time so I'll just ask you about one thing, please reply. You mentioned an apartheid state. You didn't mean the State of Israel who allows all religions to live and practice their religion in it's land, right? You must have meant the future state the palestinians plan on creating where they won't let a single Jew in, right??
10. close, but misses the mark.
ben Ish   (07.08.09)
#6 mentioned something significant without realizing it. All US presidents have followed the same agenda, regardless of which party they are from. Publicly each side accuses and attacks each only for show. The real agenda never changes. US presidents come and go, but the course never actually changes. No president has ever increased liberty and freedom for US citizens since 1964, but they vote for them by the millions anyway. How is the evil "cult of personality" atmosphere any different from Stalin, Hitler, Kim il-Sung or Obama? In WHAT way is it actually different? It is not. ALL of these were swept into power by an adoring mass crying tears of change and progress, swooning over a charismatic speaker, sweeping over the failures of the past, and fueling visions of a future utopia. You can add every South American dictator to the list, as well as Idi Amin, Pol Pot, Mao Tse-dong, Ho Chi Minh... in fact EVERY despotic mass murderer in history has come into power in EXACTLY PRECISELY the same dynamic. I don't want to hear head-in-the-sand denials about how Obama differs from all of these due to irrelevant minutiae. Look at what the media offers: Obama with a halo and a golden smile, and millions of people chanting in unison. I think the whole thing is scarier than a smallpox virus rights group suing the WHO for genocide or "virus-cide"
11. Precedence
Patrick ,   Anoka, MN   (09.11.09)
But to him America’s interests take precedence and in his view they no longer necessarily coincide with Israel’s. Um, as the American President, shouldn't America's interests take precedence?!?!?!
12. Is a joke?
magdelyn ,   san francisco, ca   (09.11.09)
"...But to him America’s interests take precedence..." You're God damn right he thinks America's interests take precedence. He is the President and the United States, not Israel.
13. Delusional...
mjtimber ,   Sacramento, CA   (09.12.09)
Is it really expected that US policy should defer to the interests of Israel, even if not in the interest of the US? Wow. Refer to subject heading, though I guess the last administration may have provided a false impression.
14. most of you are myopic
m ,   australia   (11.25.09)
the Rabbi is mostly right. And the unsaid, is that American interests do not completely align with US interests AND that it was Jewish Americans moral responsibility to vote US interests at last election. Obama was the only real choice for an America going down the toilet having lost almost all reasonable claim to a responsibility to fellow Americans; ie each other. Alternatively, the American Jew should make Aliyah AND rescind US citizenship or at abstain from voting.
