Syria wants it back on a silver platter. Peres is honarary president not the foreign minister. he should be quiet about his olmert concessions. No golan will be given away as it belongs to israel in war and in history. Peres has no clue about security comparable to olmert who was as dumb as they come in military matters. Syria has to accept facts like it accepted turkish claims to part of its lands. Otherwise they can kiss my ass. And if they want war, go ahead, Israel will take care not to harm asma assad.Everybody else including this foreign minister is fair game.
10. Golan is part of Israel's historic homeland
Brod ,   USA   (07.07.09)
Enough of the Syrian crap. The Golan does not belong Syria. The Golan is part of Israel's historic homeland which Israel liberated from the Islamist-Jihadist occupiers in the 20th century. Its strategic value to Israel's national security is indispensable. As a tentacle of Iran, Syria is spewing this crap to create a distraction on Israel so that Israel will not be focusing on the fanatical Ayatollahs' nukes which they are feverishly working on. This ploy is designed to distract Israel from being prepared in defending itself from the Ayatollahs' Mushroom Cloud.
11. Golan Heights Is Syrian Land
World Citizen ,   the world   (07.07.09)
Israel has gotten rich by taking water from this land and by the orchards and vinyards it has planted there. Israel is in violation of the Geneva Convention of 1949 (settling Israeli citizens on occupied territory). It is time for Israel to face the hard truth. Worldwide boycotts sanctioned by the UN are coming against Israel if your government continues on its current path. Even the Americans are sick and tired of Israel's intransigence.

Joe ,   Ohio, USA   (07.07.09)
believe I can speak for many if not most of the people I know and there is one unanimous conclusion about the Israeli arab conflict. And it's this, the arabs have tried for years to destroy Israel and THAT'S what we're tired of. Your whining, incompetent loser attitude makes you the laughing stock of every American I know. WE support Israel. End of story
15. No. 11, if Syria had won . . .
vered ,   israel   (07.07.09)
and let's say, even conquered parts of Israel, would they have even considered giving back Israel?

i ,   jerusalem   (07.07.09)
#11 We have no apology to make, and we are not intransigent. We are actually quite reasonable, sufficing with a remnant of our patrimony. Jordan, Syria Lebanon and Iraq are all artificial, straight line bordered conjurations of this recent century. The land promised to our forefathers has natural geographical boundries: the Euphrates, the "river of Egypt" and the Mediterranean coast up to Torus Amnus, the cove in the Northeast corner on the Turkish coast. The Bible is supposedly widely read in "the world" Read it.
17. Syria, Golan Hts. and international law
Danny ,   Rehovot, Israel   (07.07.09)
Actually under international law the Golan Hts were part of the British Mandate and belong to Israel. Also under historical right dating back over 2000 years it is also part of Palestine and therefore not Syria.
18. "World Citizen", you know nothing of international law
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (07.07.09)
Israel's claim to the Golan is based on both historic and legal precedent which has been laid out repeatedly. Syria has no case. I've never trusted the judgment of someone who considers himself a "world citizen". Thanks for making my case.
19. Sorry, World Citizen, but Syria can wait and nobody cares
JPS ,   Efrat   (07.07.09)
Yes, Israel gets some water from the Golan Heights, and there are some farms there. But we got "rich" from it? Duh? Not even close. The money it costs us in defense on the Syrian border is magnitudes beyond what small change there is from water and cherries. And the Americans are nowhere close to "sick and tired" of us. Read Obama's lips: the American-Israel bond is permanent and unbreakable. If the Syrians want the Golan back, it's real, real, real easy: Complete peace = complete withdrawal. But that would mean open borders with Israel and open flow of information, education, trade and tourists. Syria can't handle that even with it's Arab neighbors, so it ain't gonna happen with Israel. Nope, Syria is not interested in full peace. Therefore, Israel is not interested in giving up the Golan. There will be no boycotts sanctioned by the UN, nor will America squeeze us, because they know that Syria is the problem.
20. To "World Citizen" # 11.
FO ,   Belgium   (07.07.09)
The nonsense you write proves your knowledge in history is just at ground zero level. So just a free lesson to you as well as for other illiterate readers. The "Palestine Mandate" as confirmed by the League of Nations in 1922 encompassed within its borders the "Golan Heights". The League's "Mandate" recognized in its Preamble "the historical connetion of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country". (In clear: a State). The League gave the Jews the irrevocable right to settle anywhere in the area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, including the Golan Heights, a right unaltered in International Law and valid to this day due to Article 80 of the Charter of the United Nations. The Golan Heights were illegally given away to the French Mandate of Syria on March 1923. This territorial "transfer" was made surreptitiously in a capricious and arbitrary fashion by the British (by breaching Article 5 of the League's decisions), whose sole interest was to secure Mosul's oil fields to Irak. A Mandate is a Trust, according to Article 80 of the UN Charter, Israel's decision to impose its Laws on the Golan Heights on December 14, 1981, had RIGHTED the wrong that was commited by the British in March 1923. The "Golan Heights" as they are known today were NEVER part of Syrian Real Estate, so Syria cannot make a standing claim about this matter. No thanks for this free of charge lesson. By the way, if it may be of any comfort to you, the vast majority of Israelis are as illiterate in history as you are, World Citizen.
21. #!! World A-Hole
JB ,   CANADA   (07.07.09)
Your shit has no end, does it, dumbass? Where do you find this crap, on wikipedia or from some Islamic propaganda site? The fact that there even is a Syria is thanks to the French and British carving up the Ottoman Empire! And the Syrians lost it after spending decades shelling the Galilee from its heights. So tough shit, world dick-head. here is a message you can take back to your friend Assad: FOAD and the same goes for you. Stop world pollution!

Dan ,   Titusville, FL USA   (07.07.09)
Land lost is a war is part of why wars are to be avoided. Syria lost the Golan but may reclaim it in serious negotiations....which they apparantly have no interest.
24. The Golan is Jewsih land and has been for over 2000 years!

If Syria wants peace she can have it for peace! The liberated Golan is ours!

Let me get this straight. Syria invades Israel with the intent on killing Jews and taking their land but get their butts handed to them therefore losing land and now they want it back so that they can attack again?
27. World History for World Failures
ben Ish   (07.07.09)
Golan belongs to Syria: Like Czechoslovakia belongs to Germany. Like Texas belongs to Mexico. Like Armenia belongs to Turkey. Like Taiwan belongs to China. Like Tibet belongs to India. Like Rwanda belongs to the Hutus. Like Darfour belongs to umm... Oh, you probably don't like that one eh? Keep talking peace at all costs morons. Oh wait, you don't consider the blood of a billion innocents a significant cost, do you?
28. The Golan
Jim Payne ,   Las Cruces, NM, USA   (07.07.09)
Syria demanding the return of the Golan is elephant bwa. Having stood and spent time on the Golan last year one can see that half of Yisrael is vulnerable to missile and arty fire. For me an analogy is a game of blackjack in a casino. You make a bet, you lose, the dealer takes your money. You put the money there and took the risk. They are not going to give it back if you ask. Syria played a real bad hand of blackjack in 1973 and they lost their bet. Yisrael did not force them to play. The Syrians insisted on it. So, Syria, accept that you made a bad decision and quit whining. Jim

hey fat A$$ mualem do some homework Occupied territory is territory under military occupation. Occupation is a term of art in international law; in accordance with Article 42 of the Laws and Customs of War on Land (Fourth Hague Convention); October 18, 1907,[1] territory is considered occupied when it is actually placed under the authority of the hostile army. The occupation extends only to the territory where such authority has been established and can be exercised. At the end of a war, usually the victorious side is in possession of territory previously possessed by another state. This territory is known as occupied territory. Acquisition of occupied territory is incidental to a war, where the military forces of the occupying power come into the possession of territory previously held by another state. Occupation is usually temporary; and under the subsequent articles of the Hague convention (articles 43, 44, and etc.), the status quo must be maintained pending the signing of a peace treaty, the resolution of specific conditions outlined in a peace treaty, or the formation of a new civilian government.[citation needed] Examples of occupied territory include Germany and Japan after World War II; Cambodia by Vietnam from 1979 until 1989; Iraq after the 2003 invasion by the United States and allied forces, and the Israeli-occupied territories after the Six-Day War of 1967.
