Deciding to go to war was never the problem it was the decissions made by Olmert, Pretz & Halutz to try micromange the war from their offices and ignore the commanders in the field. Halutz was convinced he could win the thing by air alone despite the fact the infantry kept saying give us more men. It wasn't until the final days that Halutrz admitted air power wasn't going to win it and gave them more men. Everything the air & ground forces did the politicians tried to dictate and told them all we know better so you just be good boys and girls and follow orders we give you. There was also lack of coordintion so supplies were not getting through and thanks to over a decade of anual budget cuts the military they were not ready for anything other than running around the streets of Gaza. Training for reserves was virtually non existent and so they got out of shape and forgot skills that they are supposed to keep fresh through regular training. The army hadn't bought enough body armour .. why waste money on protection for reserves who won't need it unless there is a major call up? The army would buy a tank but to save money they wouldn't buy systems to go on those shiny new tanks which protect from anti tank rockets. Then Livni proudly sogned 1701 just when the army was starting to get their act together. The thing was a disaster in every possible way. To make it worse neither Olmert, Livni, Peretz, Halutz or even the new president elect Peres all snubbed the one year memorial service for the dead soldiers.
