31. #25 You love Arabic. I love Italian.
Jake   (07.15.09)
So let's add the Italian names of cities to Israeli road signs: Gerusalemme, Tel Aviv-Giaffa, Caifa, Bersabea, San Giovanni d'Acri, Tiberiade, etc. Or how about Greek, which has a much older history in Eretz Israel than Arabic, and was used extensively by the Jews in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Israel should add the ancient Greek names of the towns to the road signs: Hierosolyma = Jerusalem Ioppe = Jaffa Antiochia Ptolemais = Acco Beit She'an = Scythopolis and while at it, let's just reserve the name 'Israel' for Hebrew language name of the country, and let it be called 'Palestine' in English. It was like that during the Mandate.
32. #30 , Hebrew and Arabic are not 'derived from Aramaic'
Jake   (07.15.09)
Hebrew , as a Canaanite language, is part of the 'Northwest Semitic' language category. Aramaic, as a Northwest Semitic language, is very closely related to Hebrew but it is not the ancestor of Hebrew. Hebrew was originally spoken in Canaan, Aramaic in Syria and Upper Mesopotamia. Arabic is a West Semitic language, related more distantly to Hebrew and Aramaic, but primarily derived from neither.
33. #24, Good post.

It is true, in the Tanach, Hebrew was not called 'Hebrew' but the 'Language of Canaan' (Isa. 19:18). Hebrew is the only surviving form of what was in ancient times a lingua franca used by a great variety of tribes in Canaan in addition to the Israelites: Canaanites, Philistines, Perizites, Jebusites, Hivites, Hittites, Gibeonites, Ammonites, Moabites, ... everything but Arabites. So, if the 'Palestinians' really wish to pass off as true natives to the land, they should switch to Hebrew, and stop referring to Shechem as Nablus, an Arab corruption of its Roman name, 'Flavia Neapolis' (named in honor of the Flavius family that captured Judaea, put down the Jewish revolt, and destroyed the 2nd Temple). One small correction, if I may. The Mamelukes were mostly Turkic-speaking soldiers brought from Central Asia, not Kurdish. They rebelled against the Ayyubid dynasty established by Salah ad-din, who was a Kurd.
