1. Comparing the Holocaust to 'Nakba'? Are you mad?
Jake   (07.23.09)
You are following in the footsteps of the madder than mad "Israeli" director Ari Folman, who used foreign money and made the film 'Waltz with Bashir'. This film compared Israel with the Nazis, the Palestinians with the European Jews, and Sabra and Shatila with the Holocaust. Not one word about the actions of the PLO in Lebanon and elsewhere. Just like in this article. Not one word about the actions of the Arabs that precipated the 'Nakba'. After seeing how effectively the Nazis were able to kill Jews, the Arabs launched a war of annihilation and extermination against the Yishuv and fledgling State of Israel. Excuse Israel for winning.
2. In 1948, there was no Palestinian people...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (07.23.09)
... just Arabs living within the British Mandate of Palestine. The very same could be said of the Syrians and Lebanese living within the French Mandate of Syria. This is because the European idea of Nationalism hadn't quite taken root yet among Arabs living in the Middle East. The idea of a Palestinian people was birthed in the 1960's to counterweight Jewish Nationalism in the Holy Land. Historically, its existence has had only one purpose- to deny Jews their right to self-determination. There are numerous other fallacies in Yoram Kaniuk's logic and understanding of historical facts leading to an equally fallacious and delusional conclusion. This miscarriage of the mind isn't worth the memory space it occupies on YNet's servers...
3. the"" nakba""is the biggest lie!
oded   (07.23.09)
the nakba is equall to holocaust denying-- a complete twist and turn of historical facts. the facts are that the never did accept a jewish entity in their midst , no mattar what, and they still don't. they bear the consequences of that.
4. Bravo
Avi ,   NY, USA   (07.23.09)
Your commentary is a flower of reason in the desert of zealotry and hate. You are compassionate without being weak. But, I fear you are a dying breed. The future belongs to those who can shout the loudest. In it's unflagging quest for security and conquest, Israel risks its soul in the process. It has become corrupted by the very thing it seeks.
5. Israeli society recognizes Palestinian suffering BUT
Ivory Tower   (07.23.09)
Israelis should NOT adopt the Palestinian "Nakba" narrative. As the author repugnant asserts, "The Nakba fighters fought heroically, but we fought better." You are joking, right? The intention of the Arab armies was to destroy the newly born State of Israel, tantamount to genocide. And that's heroic? This writer suffers from extreme, irrational, narcissistic guilt. Israelis should not accept this nonsense, particularly when the Arabs continue to harbor dreams of Israel's destruction.
6. As a US WWII vetran I have to disagree
Norm Smyth ,   USA   (07.23.09)
Some enemies deserve all the hell they've gotten back and more besides. They lost and I have no regrets or sympathy to spare for those bastards.
7. Remembering "Nakba"- forgetting 9 be-Av.
Ariel ,   Europe   (07.23.09)
8. Kind of hard to respect people that blow up buses full of
A Jew ,   Israel   (07.23.09)
women and children.
9. they will read what?!
Ilana   (07.23.09)
get real
10. "Palestinians" are not a people, they are Arab people.
(07.23.09)
Yasser Arafat invented the "people of Palestine" not so long ago. We all know there's no Palestinian culture or history, these are Arabs that happened to immigrate to the area. Their roots are in Jordan and Egypt. Let them go back home.
11. ISRAEL'S DEMISE WILL COME WHEN WE RESPECT OUR ENEMIES.
Ben Avraham ,   Tel Aviv   (07.23.09)
12. We will respect and honor then after they disappear
El Puerco Marco ,   MadreImperio EspaƱol   (07.23.09)
as we did to the Jews on Spanish soil. Now when there are barely any Jews left on the peninsula we respect and honor them a lot. This is the way of the victors in the world and why should we want Zionists to be any different than what we have done
13. Why you don't remember nakba in Jordan?
smith   (07.23.09)
go in Jordan and enjoy nakba, not in Israel.
14. Peace will come when fought and defeated will respect us
Michael ,   Jerusalem   (07.23.09)
chalom harsh av
15. fairy tales...
gary ,   marlboro, nj   (07.23.09)
what a lovely fairy tale written by someone who doesnt fool anyone in his attempt to show the path toward the destruction of a jewish state
16. First they should recognize that we won
TruthMonger   (07.23.09)
17. Enlightening piece
Nour ,   Palestine   (07.23.09)
I wish more Israelis had your mentality. It's just refreshing, a totally different way of looking at the conflict. AMEN to your ideas, indeed.
18. What a load of crap
Sarah ,   New York City, USA   (07.23.09)
They shouldn't have started a war; they shouldn't have trusted their Arab leadership and the leadership of the five Arab nations that urged them to leave. Nakba? Hey, sh*t happens. Happens to a lot of people in a lot of places --- I don't feel particularly sorry for the Palestinians because they have proven numerous times that they are the architects of their own misery and that war and terror are not the answer. I didn't feel sorry for Germans after World War II. didn't feel sorry for Japan after World War II (and yes, that includes the two nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki). Again -- I don't feel sorry for the Palestinians. Sorry. Israel was never their home; they were squatters. And the author is a consummate idiot for even SUGGESTING that Jerusalem could be a shared capital. Ship his stupid ass off to Gaza or Ramallah where he can live cheek by jowl with his precious Palestinians.
19. No respect for Yoram Kaniuk and his "nakba"
Rehavam ,   Israel   (07.23.09)
Other question. What is Yoram Kaniuk to tell Am Israel to give up JERUSALEM?
20. I have personal question for Yoram Kaniuk
Rehavam ,   Israel   (07.23.09)
I was told by people from 48 that muslim-arabs in 1948 "came to finish what Hitler started". Did they lie to us? "Nakba fighters fought heroically" - your words. "throw jews to the sea..." mission of "heroic fighters"?
21. Just a wish
i ,   jerusalem   (07.23.09)
could someone with the requisite skill forward the second article in Aruzt-7 to this lunatic author? One can hope that sometime eventually the shrill broadcasts from the PA brass will penetrate the selective hearing. "We will never recognize Israel, we will not call off our call to war, we will not stop the resistance" (sic)
22. TO no 6 & 10
Shaalan ,   KSA   (07.24.09)
Let us agree with your strange opinion that no palestinan before they were arabs or let us say indian. Finally LAND OWNER. You came from where what your nationality before you become isralies. This land before you come name Palestian and all arabs or nonarabs called Palestinains. After the NAKBA name changed to Isreal and every body called isrealies. Denying the facts and people existing not the solution. History is so solid so don't try to use your head to hit it because you will lose LOOOOOOOOOL
23. Blunt as always, Sarah
Cameron ,   USA   (07.24.09)
I pity the next defeated army that comes under your gaze, begging for quarter.
24. I agree that Arab education MUST include episode on genocide
William ,   Israel   (07.24.09)
attacks on Israel and its people. Only when the truth of the attacks and the involvement of Arab leaders in the war, using Pals as fodder for a genocidal agenda. Arab education should uncover their involvement in the villification of Jews and Israelis which led to many attacks based on false rumors, and a special mention to how Pals are used for this agenda - in Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza, Kuwait...everywhere. Like the Germans had to learn about the Holocaust, so too must the Arabs take a hard look in the mirror to really understand the event fully.
25. "a state where we respect those who fought against us.."
William ,   Israel   (07.24.09)
and were defeated... Won't that only happen when the defeated party admits defeat and can move on from their own hurt pride? A host of other nations have done so throughout history and have moved on, and grew - Germany, Japan, Russia, the UK, etc. Arabs can't seem to admit defeat nor to move on....not our problem.
26. what l lie is
nora ,   jerusalem   (07.24.09)
they did not came they were presented ... and you came --ya ka3deh yekfeeki sharr el3abreh ---- it was from the start when moses brought his people to palastine to be the light in this land but they would not be then jessus from this land wanted to correct the behavior of these coming people to this holy land also they failed to be the right people lastly islam enter this land and enter the hearts of the residentss of this holy land .. i believe that jews had another opurtunity to be the light but they faild .. becouse they did not respect the people on this holy land .......
27. does anyone remember the 1 million jews kicked out of arab
rachel ,   usa   (07.24.09)
countries?....They still have their keys to a lot of property stolen from them .....the synagogues are all empty ...why the silence ?
28. I have no doubt that Germans suffered too...
AK   (07.24.09)
...when they were kicked out of Czechoslovakia; East Prussia and other parts that belong to Poland today and were Germany before 1945. So what? They started the war; they committed crimes against humanity; they paid the price -- a small price all things considered. This goes for Germans and Palestinian Arabs alike. BTW, Germans are working hard to have their 'naqba' commemorated, as well.
29. I guess Kaniuk prefers Jewish children under Arab flag
AK   (07.24.09)
reading Arab poets and girls being kidnapped and 'married' by force to their rapists, like the latest case in Yemen. What is amazing that even as anti-Semitism reemerges in Europe and Arabs keep on peddling the ugliest forms of Jew-hatred in their mass media, all too many Israelis cheerfully seek to delegitimize their own country. Those 2000 years of being stateless and powerless must have been wonderful, I guess. Kaniuk, learn the history of your own people, especially the history of Jews living in Islamic lands.
30. Glad to see a brainer on YNET
Husam ,   Occupied Palestine   (07.24.09)
You can take our country and claim it to be a Jewish one but you'll never erase our memories. We will raise our kids teaching the love of this land and not teach them to hate like u claim!!! LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT
