Can't you see that you've substituted one religious worldview for another? Man is an animal, not lord over anything (evidence to the contrary). Your religion is Darwinist Materialism. So ethnic studies was another fad, Judaism will survive without it. You may speak for many young folks (esp. in heathen Oregon), but I can tell you that there are still many kids out there who see the special moral wisdom that Judaism carries through time. I know, I've got a couple!
32. To Mike: Universalism, Forced or Shown?

You said "The Torah brought pseudo-universalist pretensions that we would teach everyone else how to be better human beings ..." Not so bad an idea, surely? even if we haven't got it entirely right. But what a difference with the universalist pretensions of communism, whose approach to teaching has always involved the barrel of the gun. It might be a close contest to argue whether movements based on universal ideals have killed more than those based on ethnic/religious/racial precepts. And complicating the distinction is Islam, which while appearing particularistic, has universalist pretensions. Shalom

I'm not sure whether you meant heathen to be an ad hominem insult or a compliment. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and take it as a compliment. I feel badly however because recent articles have placed "New England" as the "capitol" of "none of the above" for religious identification. Oregon used to be at the top. I guess we will have to try harder. I also have two adult children, who are happy heathens like their father having jettisoned the baggage of religion.....
34. Judaism in Israel is represented by the Haridim

they have the monopoly on policy and status and it's development. Small wonder no one listens and marriage by rabbinate is on the decrease. Even this new civil marriage law is a shame. Many will forgo the pleasure and still go abroad. Jews not just non Jews.

when my husband was growing up in Israel he always had classes about the upcoming holidays and on parashat hashavua[weekly torah portion] it wasn't heavy duty but gave the basics to the students going to a non religious school about who they are and where they came from. people had the understanding and tolerance of each other. my cousin who teaches in israeli schools, elementary division has now decided to put her children into a more religious school.she says the garbage that is going on amongst the students is so frightening she does not want such ill behaviour being brought into her home. what could be so wrong as to teach the basics of the ten commandments to kids; do not steal, do not lie, do not commit adultery. no one is saying you have to keep shabbat although it could be nice, but maybe if people just followed these three commandments society in israel could be very beautiful. instead of daddy going to work and having his affairs with money hungry woman in the work place or people stealing from each other and not being truthful just these 3 things should be at least taught at an early age think about it people
