Whats next they will be demanding segragation on EL AL, although it could be a good idea and put them in "cargo" where they belong!
2. Segregation not required by Halacha
Israeli grandmother   (08.19.09)
The current fashionable attempts among some Haredi groups to force rigid sexual segregation in public, the repeated campaigns to compel shopkeepers to stock only "modest" womens clothes without the use of shopwindow models and other extreme demands not required by Jewish religious law or tradition are basically a power-play which should not be tolerated by the general public or our State institutions. We only have to look at nearby Gaza to see Hamas "suggesting" but in fact forcing females into veils and long robes. These tragic attempts to enforce backward male -dominated prejudices on our modern Israeli society must be resisted. As a lifetime keeper of Halacha I reject these attempts to control my movement and appearance in public.
3. You can have the buses to yourselves
observer   (08.19.09)
The haredim are quite capable of running their own services (and do on several lines). Just watch as the lines that run through and between haredi areas collapse as they are deemed not financially viable by the operators - or even better, are kept running at a massive loss for which the rest of the population has to pay.
4. #2 Amen - " power-play"
Josh   (08.19.09)
I would say it is more to do with cult building which is a form of " power-play". I think if they want to behave this way, the men should wear horse blinders or blurry contacts just in case. Accidentally seeing a woman might be too bug of a made up sin to take a chance. After all a molucule of cheese on a meat plate is BOILING a GEDI in it's MOTHERS milk. Look at the blame they did for the Versai collapse. Then the first sight of a woman can be when the Rabbi pushes an arranged marriage through the door and says surprise this is the wife we picked for you. At all other times they can then walk around like the three blind mice and at least people will see them for who they are. Blind to Torah and even more blind to G-d.

13. violently being pushed to the back?
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.09)
Has someone used violence? I dont recall anyone using violence. Stop feeding the masses with this CRAP.I wouldnt want segregated public transport but if there is a constituency that does want segregation and they dont mind what do I care. The same way that people want restuarants open on Shabbat. In Talpiyot and other areas that are not designated religious areas as much as it bothers me, you have a right if its not in my face. When was the last time a non religious person took a #7 over to the Charedi area of Jerusalem where they want segregation. Just like I dont go to HaUman on Shabbat. These far left loones gotta quit bagering the religious folk.
14. #12 What nonsense. Where is the money in lying?

16. !3 Shadoll ,
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.19.09)
I think my memory is OK . A woman was agressed for not sitting in the back of a bus . If they want segregated buses in their neighborhoods i could agree , but Ashdod - Haifa ? Arad - Bne Berak ? Do you know that a 21 km fare Elad - bne berak is cheaper as the 14 km Tel Aviv - Petach Tikva ? And i can give other examples . Who pays for it ? all the other passengers who have to pay more . And that is wrong .

18. Last Stop
Maskil ,   Johannesburg, SA   (08.19.09)
A sincerely hope that the wide front referred to can put a stop to this insanity. This is probably Israel’s last chance to preserve itself as a somewhat democratic, Western, secular state. The most shocking aspect of this episode is the statement that “A Transport Ministry's committee convened Tuesday to discuss whether to legalize segregation between men and women on public transportation lines.” What a casual way to discuss implementing gender Apartheid in the Jewish State! http://blog.maskil.info/
19. chutzpah rhetoric.
izzy d   (08.19.09)
This entire subject can be shot down in 3 seconds. two sentences. short ones. ready? 1. No one has to ride these buses. 2. There is alternative transportation. THATS IT!!!!!!!! If a woman feels humiliated on these buses...SHE DON'T HAVE TO RIDE IT!!!!! its that simple. So now we are forced to agree that its the existence of the buses that annoy those who have so much free time and nothing better to obsess over. well? The way I see it, the charedim are the ones that are being forced to conform. The charedim are having their domain invaded. The charedim are the ones that aren't being tolerated with respect. I am not religious. I HATE religion. to me the religion of the liberal left is worse them that of the charedim. This lady would not be able to hold a logical argument for 10 seconds. the article is FULL of fallacy and rhetoric.
20. women power
Israel ,   Israel   (08.20.09)
Thanks G-D that those women are finally awake of their rights. Yes, this is DEMOCRATIC country, it shoud be equal in every way, dont be like in other countries that their women is being violated, humililated because those stupid think that their women is just a toy that can be put in the side and if they want to play they can play with it. Remember guys that you have grandmother, mother, sister and children, they deserve to be treated with respect. Your not in this earth without women, just think where you came from before you became human. Women have rights especially in public places, if theres segregation be it, in private, to respect the religion. GO GIRLS............
21. Charles boobi - its me.

23. 19 izzy d . Alternative routes ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.20.09)
You have a segregated line Arad - bnei brak , 142.2 km 25 shekel Alternative ? via Mal'akhi junction . Fare to this Junction 37 shekel + approx. 30 from there to Beni Brak . Makes at least 65 sh. with a normal bus , and you have to wait at Mal'achi . 25 Sh is also the fare from Tel Aviv to Haifa , 86 km . From Elad to Bnei Brak , 21.9 km 7.2 sh . segregated . Normal Tel Aviv - Petach Tikva , 14 km . 9.1 shekel . All this from the Egged website , you can check it .
24. Amazing how much time the haredim find to harrass everyone!
Susan ,   USA   (08.21.09)
I guess if you don't have to go to the army, and your wife does all the work around the house as well as holding down a job...I guess that leaves plenty of time for rioting and harassing women on buses and the like.
25. #5 Charles
Lisa   (08.22.09)
"no true... convert will attack the Rabbanim"- so you believe, as an non-believer, that the Rabbanim are infallible- they can do no wrong? The Pope is 'infallible' on very rare occasions, only a few times in the past 2000 years- so you believe the religious leaders of the Jews- who are often contradicting each other- are infallible? Isn't a thinking person allowed to question some of the more outlandish decisions and rules....? Reading TB I notice some people are violently defending EVERYTHING the Rav come up with- others are more critical. Faith is good- blind faith is not.
26. Lisa
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.22.09)
If someone attacks ALWAYS the Rabbanim , even if they hare right , what does it say to you ? Being against this attacker does this mean that i always agree with the Rabbasnim ? Telling that a Rav is right , when he is , is NOT saying that he is infaillible . It is agreeing with what he said this time . And Lisa , who is always saying that they are right ? Who is violently defending them ?
27. Lisa , explain please .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.22.09)
. Where did i say that the Rabbanim are infaillible ? What made you think this ? Tell me who is violently defending the Rabbanim ? Is it me ? Where did you take those idioties ? Tell me where , or retract what you wrote and apologise .
