1. I'm with Liberman.
Steve Klein   (08.24.09)
His seems like a reasonable requirement. What am I missing?
2. GOOD FOR YOU LIEBERMAN! Thats why meretz (virus) has 3 seats
Jae ,   Lynn   (08.24.09)
and you have 15. Israelis are sick of the meretz stranglehold on media and supreme courts.
3. I agree, with reservations
Simon Nothman ,   Australia   (08.25.09)
I think national service is a great thing and to make that a pre-requisite for selection to a foreign diplomatic post is reasonable. Having Haredim and Arabs representing Israel can be quite advantageous at times. However there is a problem in that there aren't structures in place that encourage Haredim and Arabs to perform national service. It's up to all of us to ensure that there are appropriate avenues for them to serve the nation, both voluntarily and professionally.
4. ISNT POLICE IS ONE THING, DIPLOMACY IS ANOTHER
sam ,   san francisco, ca   (08.25.09)
WHAT KIND OF INTELIGENCE DOES IT TAKE TO RECOGNISE THAT MILITARY AND DIPLOMACY ARE OPPOSITES??!! HOW CAN YOU MIX THE??!! ITS LIKE MIXING OIL AND VINEGAR!! YES IT IS DELICIOUS, BUT THEY DONT MIX... ASK MICHEL AOUN IN LEBANON!!!
5. Liberman I've got a question for you....
Rivkah ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (08.25.09)
I'm an olah, more specifically a female olah who who immigrated to Israel at age 24. I will never be recruited for the army, and I personally believe that in the two years I have lived in Israel, I have given a lot to this country. Why should I be denied the right to represent our country in the diplomatic arena just because I didn't serve in the army? Don't you think you're being a little close-minded to what olim and other minorities can offer this country?
6. Reasonable, not discriminatory
Alex ,   Philadelphia, US   (08.25.09)
There is nothing discriminating in this proposals. In many countries there is such a requirement. In many US government agencies you can get a job only after a stint in a military service. Liberman did not say that some ethnic minority or some specific sector of population cannot apply. He only PROPOSES that in order to work for the government of the state of Israel one must either serve in IDF or do a national service. What's wrong with that?
7. #3, only reservation i have
Danny   (08.25.09)
is about Olim who come later to Israel. I think it is perfectly reasonable for someone who is born in Israel to have done some form of national service. If they were not willing to do that then how are they going to put in the time for diplomatic service?
8. Invest in your country and yourself, do IDF or national svc.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (08.25.09)
but no free lunch, EARN your opportunities.
9. Lieberman is being perfectly reasonable
Steve   (08.25.09)
There is nothing wrong with demanding that everybody perform military service in accordance with the law. If someone refuses to serve in the IDF, they don't deserve to be allowed to work for the government. There are exceptions, such as new immigrants, but someone who just 'didn't serve' deserves to be discriminated against. In America, military veterans often receive preferential treatment when applying for government jobs, and there is nothing wrong at all with this. People who don't serve their country do not deserve the same rights as those who do.
10. Lieberman Has A Great Idea!!
Christy ,   Boston, US   (08.25.09)
To expand on that idea, I'd like to see the US make a requirement that all governing bodies be open to US Vets. only. There's something good about the idea that willingness to fight for one's country be a pre-requisite for leading one's country. Great place to start in Israel is with the cadet candidates.
11. Easier said than done
Rebecca ,   Israel   (08.25.09)
It's funny how people justify Liberman's proposal by saying to "just join the army". It's not that simple in this country. If you are past the normal drafting age (20 for women and 26 for men), it's not easy to volunteer in the army. In fact, if you are a woman, it's extremely difficult. We're not America here. We're not begging people to join the army to fight in two huge wars overseas.
12. Lieberman's cadets
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (08.25.09)
I've a question for Liberman - did you serve in our army ?
13. to 12#
(08.25.09)
he did, artillery.
