1. THE MOST AUTHORITARIAN AND VIOLENT OF POLICE
rabbi Jochanan ,   Gush Chalav   (08.31.09)
get back what they distributed to the "orange" camp throughout the years, with beatings and false arrests.
2. In america u can call a police officer a nazi
Tzioni ,   NY   (08.31.09)
Come iver to america if you hate your country so much but by the way in america we have freedom of speeech you can call a cop anything you want. And by the way, in america cops dont beat up childeren who protest. We arrest terrorists and put em away for life not like the weak israeli government who exchhanes 1000 prisonors for 1 dead body.
3. jesusalen
jesusalen ,   jesusalen   (08.31.09)
jesusalen is the revelation of isa al masih (qur´m)
4. My, how soon they forget Amona and Gush Katif.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (08.31.09)
How soon they forget vicious, violent, terrorist policemen beating people who had not laid a hand on them or threatened them. How soon they forget the policemen who stole the homes of religious Jews to give the land to terrorists that soon shot rockets into Israel.
5. Ahem...
Someone ,   USA   (08.31.09)
I'm amazed that rants like this are allowed to be posted on a website like Ynet. Although the overall point is valid, the author simply can't help bending facts and arguing without reason to make his point. This Hebron attack? It was proven the man didn't even have a gun. It had nothing to do with "security" considerations. In the video, the man who was "shot" stands up a few seconds later. Would someone really be arrested in America for calling a police officer a Nazi? Probably not, especially if we look after the Henry Gates debacle. Next time the author decides to rant, maybe he should check his facts. And his head.
6. I'll explain it to you.
TT   (08.31.09)
The essence of the reason the polic do not act aggressively with such anti-riot tactics as water cannons is to not provide images for the international anti-Israel press which will use them all over the web, believe. it. Also, a couple of other points, if I may. First of all in the US, you CAN call a cop a nazi and unless you are also acting very aggresive you will not be arrested. I could walk in front of the police station all day long carrying a sign that says "Cops are Nazis" and nothing could be done legally. BUT, I DO agree with your points around being too tolerant of religious protestors and that the idea of each shabbot being a hand to hand combat scene is ridiculous and it needs to be stopped. The police need to ramp it up and that may require making the area a closed zone for several shabbots while stronger tactics are used.
7. didn't get the talkbacks you wanted, eh?
TT   (08.31.09)
8. YORAM....WHAT ARE YA SMOKIN' IN THAT PIPE BUDDY?
....DACON9   (08.31.09)
9. Facts WAY off
Michelle   (08.31.09)
B"H Dear Mr. Kaniuk, If an American referred to a police officer as "Nazi" he would not be arrested immediately, as you say. We have something called, "Freedom of expression." It doesn't exist in the leftist mind, I know, but nonetheless, it exists in the American constitution. Likewise, the rabbis who were arrested had nothing to do with rioting or protesting and everything to do with extreme acts of criminal behavior involving large sums of laundered money. Please, get your facts straight.
10. The secular self-defense force must be established!
Alex ,   Jerusalem   (08.31.09)
The secular self-defense force must be established to shout down growing existential thread. Hara-dim must be throwing out of our country
11. It tells us in the Tehillim that "Hashems mercy is fresh &
new everyday"Yoram ,   should read it!!!   (08.31.09)
12. Oh really?
nr ,   los angeles, usa   (08.31.09)
People in American don't get arrested for calling cops Nazis, which kinda throws the rest of your arguments by the wayside. I have seen plenty of videos on the internet of Israeli policemen beating up unarmed haradim - does the name Amona mean anything to you? Looked like a pogrom. No, Jews shouldn't be calling Jews Nazis, but Jews shouldn't be disrespecting the feelings of each like the secular are doing with the parking lot. We hear in America that there's a big corruption problem within the police in Israel in terms of organized crime. I terms of your police force, I don't think being called Nazis by the Haradim is really the issue.
13. Kaniuk "settler" bashing again
Veteren Israeli   (08.31.09)
Of course the rioting and vandalizing Jews in Jerusalem should be dealt with full rigor allowed by law, but to conflate them with "settlers" is just Kaniuk pushing his personal hate agenda. Government forces handle demonstrating Jews in Yesha with brutality and let out their aggressive instincts on unsophisticated teenagers. Not quite the same as the tame tactics which until recently were used against the Jerusalem rioters. The time has come to recruit quality personnel to our police force in numbers adequate to their tasks in the community and to train a quality and honorable force which will regain lost public respect and support. It is also time to show our Arab citizens that they are adequately protected in their villages, where murders seem to be accepted as a norm.
14. having witnessed police actions
eliezer ,   jerusalem   (08.31.09)
I have witnessed police actions in Britain, the U.S. and in Israel and can easily understand why the police in England and the U.S. and never called Nazis: They behave like professionals. Unfortunately the police in Israel do not have the same training with dealing with mobs and crowds. They use too much force, randomly beating onlookers, and people who happen to be passing by. If the Israeli police wish to be treated with respect and not be called 'Nazis', let them learn manners and proper methods for crowd control and not rely on brute force as did the Nazis.
15. Foaming at the mouth
Eve (the famous one) ,   Iraq   (08.31.09)
You're nominated for Hamas propaganda minister.
16. To Yoram
Ricardo Macher ,   KarneiShomron-Israel   (08.31.09)
Mr. Yoram, I read your article and arrived just to one conclusion: You people in the left hate settlers more than love anything. Hareidim and National Religious are completely different, starting with the small fact (for you) that we are Zionists. Nobody would like to join the police for other reasons like being the arm of a government who is afraid of imposing law on arabs but is always ready to be inflexible with Jews. Sorry, except if they are part of Mafia gangs from which our police is more afraid than from arabs. Why do you hare religion? Ever thought but really thought about that? If you are really liberal you must admit the right of part of the people to be religious and not materialistic dialectic!
17. Why not?!
Avi ,   Jerusalem, israel   (08.31.09)
There is no one way street! Police behave the the hareidem in a very simular way, they hit them as in no other country, so the protesters behave as in no other country! And the protestors are fighting for the jewish law after all, so the police from the jewish state, should protect them, rather then hit them...
18. The wicked souls, gladly join
simon ,   Jersey USA   (08.31.09)
In the US these police would long be arrested for Police Brutality. You in Peace Now Believe that "Police Brutality" is a phenominum only againsst the wicked and Arabs.
19. Haredim, settlers and the police
Abba ,   Modi'in, Israel   (08.31.09)
Too bad the author of this article doesn't know the difference between accusation and conviction of a crime. His obvious delight at seeing the rabbis in America in handcuffs is sickening. In America, even rabbis are presumed to be innocent of any criminal activity, until proven guilty. Handcuffs do not prove guilt. Here in Israel, Kaniuck, like his fellow leftist media Haredim and settler bashers presume people with whom he disagrees to be guilty of crimes simply because they have the courage to publicly demonstrate against the City's deliberately provocative desecration of Shabbat, the obviously unnecessary autopsy of a man known to have been stabbed to death, and settlers who have the nerve to use force against terrorists. He has a conveniently selective memory, having overlooked Amona and many other places where police brutality has been proven. It's time he learned that in a democracy, there is freedom of speech and of expression -- even for Haredim and settlers.
20. If by "hit back" you mean:
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (08.31.09)
1. Directed a horse to trample unarmed civilians without any regard for acceptable use of force by policemen, 2. Went up to a house of a Haredi man in Jerusalem filming a clash between police and Haredim, beat him up, and stole his camera, 3. Arrested an ultra-Orthodox teenager, beat him up with his head under the police car's hood, and then a few extra hits for good measure when he was in the car itself, handcuffed, then yeah, I'd say we have more than enough cases that warranted complaints and lawsuits. Violent policemen, much like violent rioters, have no place in our society - but apparently, for Yoram Kaniuk one is acceptable and one is not. And no, Yoram, no one would arrest a person merely for calling a policeman "Nazi" in the US, only in the secular-only police state that you envision would such events occur. Nor would they arrest peaceful protesters, only violent ones - but apparently, all protesters are violent if they are Haredi, right? My guess is that you wouldn't have gotten much of a grade in a psychometric exam with that kind of logic. Maybe, instead of constantly looking for faults purely in the religious or right-wing "other", and writing rather sad rants as a result, each should examine (and try to correct) the faults in his own camp? Because all you're doing, Yoram, is setting up a straw-man argument here.
21. Police
Marilyn ,   USA   (08.31.09)
In America it is perhaps different. I think most people tend to be polite towards the police officers, mostly because they are authority figures. They also have the motto of to serve and protect on their police cruisers. Anyways if they sense someone getting dangerous or aggresive, they can haul them in. It is not like a moral question.
22. THE COPS IN THE MIDDLE !!!.
ORAO STRANKA. ,   TSARIGRAD U SRBIA.   (08.31.09)
God has no mercy on cops Who would want to join police force that is being beaten, humiliated by haredim? JEHOWAH HAS A WILL FOR ISRAEL !!!. THE POLITICIANS DO NOT FOLLOW THAT WILL !!!. THE SETTLERS FOLLOW THE WILL OF JEHOWAH !!!. THE COPS ARE CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE DOING THE WILL OF THE POLITICIANS. WHO IS TO BLAME ???. IN THIS CASE - "THE POLITICIANS and THE COPS" !!!. FURTHER - 2Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations; spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes. FROM - Isaiah 54 1"Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear! Break forth into singing and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child! For more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife," saith the LORD. 2Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations; spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes. 3For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left, and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited. 4"Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed; neither be thou confounded, for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. 5For thy Maker is thine husband" the LORD of hosts is His name" and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called. IT IS VOLONTARY TO BE A COP, AND GO AGAINST THE WILL OF JEHOWAH, ON THE BEHALF OF THE POLITICIANS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWSATpx7uzk Orao.
23. Why conflate haredim and settlers?
Steve   (08.31.09)
Haredim are not being evicted from their homes and their property. Not to my knowledge.
24. DISTORTION!!!!!!!!!!
DAVID ,   JUDEA   (08.31.09)
Unbelievable how this writer twits the truth. It is the left wing Anarchists who every week fight with soldiers and the police at Naailin and not get arrested. It is a biased media and justice system who are on a witch hunt as this article proves in constantly demonizing of the Haredi and the citizens of Judea and the Shomron, who by the way pay taxes to the state. The hatred from our Hellenist Zionists is on the rise because they are loosing their grip on their Socialist atheist state, due to their low birth egoistic western lifestyle. This whole Ynet publication is in a constant drive to create a divide and encourage a civil war.
25. I would like the job
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (08.31.09)
The police are doing the job they are paid for. I do not understand how people think that the Haradim can get away with all what they are doing, they should be arrested and fined all the cost. They are committing an Hillul Hashem. If they did not have to evacuate Jews from settlements I would love to be a cop and control the violence that these Jews (Haradim) are committing..
26. Kaniuk should become obama's adviser
Trumpeldor ,   eurabyia   (08.31.09)
His speech reflects jewish self hate He should contemplate moving to washington to put an end to his suffering I lost my faith in Israeli police when they behave like morons in Amona !
27. Condescending article!
David ,   New York   (08.31.09)
You self-hating Jew! Certainly there are religious Jews who are sitting in prison in Israel just as there are in America. That Israel is lenient with the orthodox Jews (as oppose to it's strict zero-tolerance to terror), should in itself prove that it very well knows that there is some truth in their argument (and that the issue here is merely a conflict of interests.) When a public requests something, it is okay. Unless, of course, if it is the orthodox public. Calling an officer a Nazi, is meant to remind him that his behavior resembles that of a Nazi. It is a wake up call, to remind and awaken the desensitized slumbering Israeli society, of their condescending behavior.
28. As a police officer in the US for many years
John ,   USA   (08.31.09)
I can tell you I have been called a "Nazi, Jack Booted thug etc." before.
29. Also...I don't think Israel police
John ,   USA   (08.31.09)
are becomming the "Hamburg Police Battalion".
30. Yoram Kaniuk - we'll sign up, you stay at home
JPS ,   Efrat   (08.31.09)
Good grief, what a whiner! Why would anybody like Yoram Kaniuk want to stay in Israel at all? Why not move to Sweden? Then again, it sounds like Yoram Kaniuk may be a Meretz supporter and is just mourning the fact that his breed is about to disappear. Why? Because instead of focusing on the entire country and its needs, Kaniuk is obsessed with settlers and haredim. Strange how he didn't mention gays in this op-ed, or rape victims, or traffic accident victims...or the other 90 percent of the population served by the men and women in blue. G-d has no mercy on self-consumed leftists.
