1. soldier
colin   (09.02.09)
The cowardly barak again sprouts his bullshit. As an egomaniac he is only interested that soldirts be his personal toys.Instead of protecting the state of Israel soldiers are now used to evict citizen, woman and children from thier homes at night. He gives them a gun to be used as a walking stick when injured. He runs as soon as he feels he will not have the soldiers near him in danger. He ran from Lebenon,He ran from gaza and he will again show his cowardice if the arabs say BOO He lost the election but BIBI put his trust in what he now realises was the biggest mistake of his lfe.
2. An Army protects the people, not the other way around.
Robert ,   LA,CA   (09.02.09)
It seems these days some think that the Army needs to be protected by the rest of society. You know, take one for the team, release some killers who will probably commit some terror act and kill those whose name we do not yet know for a soldier, whose job was to protect them. The Army isn't band camp, in the past, people knew that. These days, everybody wants "guarantees". How is Shalit better than those who would perish in his place? or those who died before him?
3. The Tzahal isn't the 3 Musketeers...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (09.02.09)
... and chiding it for not living up to the code of honor created in a 19th Century work of fiction is childish and stupid. This woman needs to grow up...
4. barak
mohson   (09.02.09)
barak under bibi is much better than he was under olmert who catered to his oslo illusions and endless threats without action.Kadima was a party of weaklings and bagmen without sharon. The shalit story is very difficult if you have your own children, then you know. They want their son back , its been a long time. Even if it meant dismantling israel, to get their son back. Yet any country cannot last long if it flinches under terror and blackmail. The better way to get shalit back not simply to trade 1000 prisoners for a dead body like the imbecile olmert did, but to take top hamas captive for a trade. israel has refused to do that olmert as he was a pacifist and coward.Hamas could ultimately be threatened with wholesale destruction if shalit were not returned. Then negotiations could take place. Under Rabin, peres, barak and olmert, unbeleiveable concessions and restrain were the order of the day. Thousand of israelis were maimed. Israelis have had 65 years since the ovens of aushwitz. You are no longer prisoners. Stop acting like olmert and ramon wimps!!
5. Barak's lost integrity
lauren ,   Israel   (09.02.09)
Our physical safety as individuals and as a nation is also connected to our moral integrity. Barak has lost his and we will continue to whine and demonstrate until the government does the right thing and brings Gilad Shalit safely home. The burden of national security does not have to be carried by Gilad and the Shalit family. That's what our army is for - all of them and all of us.
6. Barak used to be a brave man!
freejay3 ,   Israel   (09.02.09)
Now he is nothing but a snivelling coward!
7. Doesn't have a clue
Ex-idf   (09.02.09)
You don't have a clue. Barak is 100% right. The mission of the IDF is to defend the country. Obviously the army can't guarantee the safety of every soldier nor should it give in to unreasonable demands for Schalit. I served in 2 wars in the IDF and was ready to die.
8. Shalit family shud consider lives of others if swap occurs
Alan ,   SA   (09.02.09)
9. Tami Molad-Hayou is retarded
Andu ,   New York   (09.02.09)
Israel is dealing with a cruel enemy in Hamas who manipulates the Israeli public. Tami Molad-Hayou has fallen into Hamas' trap, as the feebleminded are liable to do. They want Israeli public opinion to force the Israeli leadership to do something stupid like release hundreds of murderers into the territories. Wake up Tami!
10. Ehud Barak
Ricardo Macher ,   KarneiShomron-Israel   (09.02.09)
Whoever read any of my talk backs knows that I am not Barak's fan. But , whoever sees a little bit further than their nose also knows that what's good for the nation is more important than what's good for an individual. Life is not always fare, but it's like it is, we all heard stories about how soldiers jumped over grenades in order to save their comrades. Do you believe they where stupid or something like that? That's what it is all about, the spirit of sacrifice for an ideal, and it's also what neo-Zionism what feels as the greatest threat, people who believe in all the things they don't, who are ready to give their life to save others. Ask any father in Israel if he is not ready to die in war before the enemy may arrive to his house and you will know that for once Barak is right, This lady who wrote this article of course finds her feelings more important than anything else, it's the fight between the Jewish culture and the culture of "don't worry, be happy"
11. The Failure Is Olmert's
RickD ,   USA   (09.03.09)
Shalit was taken on Olmert's watch. He was the one that should have gotten Shalit's return, by one way or another. What Israeli's want, and have always wanted, is closure on this issue. A military operation to free the soldier, whether successful or leading to his death, taken two years ago would have given closure. Who remembers the names of the soldiers killed at the time that Shalit was taken? Releasing hundreds of vampires with blood dripping from their fangs in exchange for this unfortunate soldier isn't the right solution for the country.
12. We can't bring back Shalit's comrades
Ilan ,   Ariel   (09.03.09)
Because we can't bring back the two comrades killed when Shalit was captured they get forgotten. That is not right. Society has a responsibility to think of what happens the day after the trade. Returning Shalitt isn't the ultimate goal of Israel's existence.
13. Barak - deliberate war loser
Keren   (09.03.09)
weak-willed wussy and deliberate war loser.
14. Did this moran actually say the state should....
(09.03.09)
"guaranty their safety?" In the army? Isn't that by definition a dangerous mission? Idiot.
15. "unwilliong to pay"
Jose ,   USA   (09.04.09)
Young lady, it appears to me, that you are anti-Israel, We have to fight!, i live in USA and I fight for my country; however, I fight for Israel also. Look back at history, go_d's people have been displace for over 1500 years, the brits kicked them in 1290(or so), the spaniards in latter yaers, the germans..... JUST READ>
16. Well said, Tammy!
Infantry reservist ,   Israel   (09.04.09)
Israel extorts her youth without giving any proprotionate consideration. I finished my service almost 11 years ago. during my service my salary was about 120$ per month. 5 years after the service came to an end, I recived 2000$ for my full service. A fair consideration is totally legitimate, keep in mind that the rate of combtants like me, are very small group of people. Proper disclosure: I'm infantry reservist who risked his life many times for the sake of his country (including the second Lebanon war and opeartion cast lead). Now, I am studying for the bar exam. So, with all due respect, no can preach me about giving because the government has to fullfil it's obligations too. In brief, we need 2 for tangoo.
17. "Guarantee"? Which army does THAT?
Bob - new proud israeli ,   Ashdod, Israel   (09.05.09)
You definitely have no clue about life when you say a boy must be "guaranteed" his safety as a precondition to enlisting. NO ARMY in the whole world can do that, at least the active ones who have to engage in wars and face enemy forces, as Israel has to do all the time. You obviously are not thinking with your head and are barking at the wrong tree.
18. WHO gives guarantee on ANYTHING?
Bob - new proud israeli ,   Ashdod, Israel   (09.06.09)
Continuing on the "guarantees" theme, just tell me, Tammy: is any boy safe if he stays out of the army? Is guaranteed he won't get killed someday by a palestinian rocket or a suicide bomber, or even by a bunch of juvenile thugs? Who do you ask for such a guarantee? Who do you blame if something goes wrong? Israel? Try higher.
