4. Palestinian state
Iranian Jew ,   CA   (09.08.09)
It is so obvious to everyone that these people have no interest in having their own state. They are pulled 20 million directions everyday and never stop to think about what they really want. We sincerely wanted a Jewish homeland and because we had the will, we did it. As long as they keep their Jew hating mentality , they will never get anywhere. They just want a state just because we got one. .. so sad
5. plo state in 2 years
alexi   (09.08.09)
Okay, lets see you do it. belin and peres convinced a reluctant rabin to try oslo peace. Ded bodies resulted and though israel had the right to kick the tunis crowd out, they did not. Peres took a long term view and hoped for accomodation. Beilin abd ben-ami indulged in an orgy of arab kissing and concessions with barak. Olmert took the reins and tried to keep out of jail by becoming an etrog among the peace now groups so he offered unebelievable concessions in return for next to nothing. The only good thing he did is he didn't put in writing. Livni sat next to him echoing his plans like a fool. Now Landau says the arabs are occupiers and though it is a twist, it is true. They occupied israel from the 7 th century and even now are trying to arabize the whole of israel with arab signs and help from carter, haaretz, and obama who is in synch with th e arabs.landau is correcty. Arabs are gobbling up homes in israel proper and israel cannot build elsewhere according to obama. Well, enough is enough. Stock up on oil and guns, and get ready to say no. The plan for iran should be well developed as USA has no plans to ever attack iran's nuclear sites. USA would do well to withdraw from afganistan and use drones and killer special forces along the periphery to control things. Likewise, their departure from iraq is vital and fast as iraqis are unreliable allies. Bibis heart is in the right place even if he is nervous as supposed cool idf sharon was dead wrong on gaza unilateral withdrawal and barak was dead wrong on peace plan with arafat.
6. PLO state
alexi   (09.08.09)
Livni advocated a PLO state along with her boss, indicted fraudster ehud olmert. Israel then received 10,000 missiles from hezbollah, death and dead bodies and 8000 missiles from hamas which made life miserable for south israelis. Am I stupid or are olmert and livni dumbbells. Under Bibi for near 6 months, israel has received less than 300 missiles north and south. So Livni,s hut up with your moralism and peace talks. You are as much a disaster as your legal colleague olmert who ripped off jewish charities to take european holidays with his family according to the police investigation. peace now, oz, grossman, beilin should take note of this fact. Israeli weakness led to wars . Peace advocated by wimps and cowards like livni, olmert and beilin will only lead to wars. Peace will happen when it happens and not because of US intervention.
7. say it again fayyad
saher ,   palestine   (09.08.09)

8. He is using the tactic, "tell a lie often enough and people
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (09.08.09)
will start to believe it." The bus and cafe bombings didn't get them what they wanted to take as theirs so now they are trying truck loads of BS.
9. He's Not Smoking, And He's Not Joking
End of Days ,   mke, usa   (09.08.09)
US plan demarcates borders. Pals unilaterally declare a state. World recognizes it. Sound familiar?
10. We have opened our hand and made our position clear. They
Rueben ,   Migdal, Israel   (09.08.09)
however have insisted on their right to hate us and to kill us and to take our land from us. We really can live side by side. But not with this generation of pals who have been taught from birth to hate us and to try to kill us. It will take at least 40yrs. to raise a new generation of pali children who have not been indoctrinated into the ways of hate. Until then, we will hold our ground. But will withdraw our hand. Shall we try this in another 40 yrs. then?
11. I don't know, I've tried to will myself a million dollars.
Good luck doing it ,   with a whole country   (09.08.09)
12. Well, then
Sarah B ,   New York City, USA   (09.08.09)
Cross your fingers, squeeze your eyes as tightly as you can and wish, wish, wish. It would work better than the other measures that the Palestinian Authority has advanced over the past two decades and has the added advantage of putting the onus on you and making it impossible for you to make endless demands upon Israel while you give nothing in return.
13. Fayyad: Dream vs. Reality
usa   (09.08.09)
Fayyad may have the right idea after all these years, but he needs to drop the tired rhetoric about Jerusalem and "right of return" --which will NEVER happen---and get with can be realistically achieved. Declaring a de facto nation while demanding another nation cede territory to accomodate it aspirations still shows the puerile inability to act independently
14. Newsweak
David ,   New England   (09.08.09)
Newstweak is in the tank for the Left in America. That being said, Fayyad has said nothing about Fatah's non-recognition of israel. And shouldn't Jordan be concerned about a radical islamic state right next door? Jordan's apartheid wall wouldn't stop missiles supplied by Iran and China. Why can't a future palestine include Jewish cities? That way Israel could maintain defensible borders without taking a huge chunk out of it's center, and Israeli acumen in the international financial and technical fields would be an asset to a future palestinian state. And why insist on Jerusalem being a capital when you could build something really spectacular and modern, in the west bank, with financing from the wealthy oil states?
15. actually e.m, they have another choice...
cali cal ,   los angeles, usa   (09.08.09)
they can get real and realize that the only way they will ever be independant is by importing massive amounts of arms in the west bank and begin firebombing tel aviv and jerusalem. also they can surround the west bank settlements and burn them into the ground. this is always an option, probably the best im my humble opinion.
16. The problem: it just might happen with US/EU/Russia backing
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, USA   (09.08.09)
If the Palestians were smart they would work as quickly as they could to get a true government setup and what is needed for a nation. But like in the past, they will find away to mess it up.
17. Israel should help the Palestinians build a state
Yaniv ,   Israel   (09.08.09)
...in Jordan.
18. Is a “Palestinian State” legitimate?
Ron B.   (09.08.09)
Along with modern Israel, the Gaza strip and the West Bank was part of the territory of Palestine within which in 1922 the League of Nations gave Britain the task of re-establishing the Jewish national home because of the unique claim by the Jews — the only people for whom it had ever been their nation state, hundreds of years before the Arabs invaded it. In other words, far from being ‘Palestinian land’, the Jews are entitled to claim it under international law, which also gives it the right to hold on to it in self-defence. Yet ‘progressive’ opinion not only denies both law and history but demands (as do the Palestinians) the ethnic cleansing of every last Jewish settler from a putative Palestinian state (just as half Israel’s population was created by Jews driven out of their ancient homes in Arab lands). So much for anti-racism. For facts and international law : http://xrl.us/bj5ng
19. If the corrupt and non-representative Fateh reject Fayad, he
David Turner ,   Richmond, USA   (09.08.09)
must be a serious threat to their privilege. Israeli leaders from Golda to Bibi have justifiably complained that there has been nobody across the Green Line with whom to even enter serious negotiations over partition and statehood. From 1947 to 2009 from al-Husseini to Arafat and, yes, Abbas, those who rose to authority seemed content to wait for the world to deliver a state. I, for one, wondered if the Arabs across the Green Line were not content in their misery, content to wait however long it might take for the New Crusaders to pack up and leave. Even Mahmud Abbas, and architect of Oslo, failed to move the peace process forward, accommodating to Hamas until too late rather than engaging Israel. Finally, a leader in authority who sounds committed to Palestinian independence! “A de facto Palestinian State within two years,” proclaims Salam Fayad, prime minister of the PA. “Who else is going to build it if we don't?” From Israel, silence. From Fateh, rejection and derision. Which all, I suppose, suggests Fayad’s 60-page document, "Palestine: Ending the Occupation – Establishing the State", may be the first serious step towards breaking the status quo. Israel and the Palestinians have nothing to lose, all to gain, by supporting Fayad. Certainly 60+ years of status quo has only brought misery and death in its wake.
20. #3 Yisrael try a reality pill instead
Avi ,   Israel   (09.08.09)
Oh you can whine and whinge all you like buit the reality of the situation is that there will be a Palestinian state and East Jerusalem will be its capital. The game of the right wing settler thugs is over!
21. Newsweek is no longer a newsmagazine
Rami   (09.08.09)
It's a left-wing opinion magazine with a communist/socialist/anti-judaeo-christian agenda.
22. we Israelis are not bright people
Israeli   (09.08.09)
for 100 years we criticize palestinians for not having any leadership, not working towards something postive. Fayyed does exactly what we hoped for all this time and we ignore and ridicule. what do we want exactly?
23. jerusalem unwelcoming
Philip ,   Afula,Israel   (09.08.09)
Dr Fayyad, I still think you are on the right track and the silence from Jerusalem only reinforces this.It simply means that they have no rational argument againt your proactive approach. If the professional politicians from Fatah dont like your idea it means that their thoughts are perhaps geared up for a different pathway.By building a decent and law abiding society you cant fail ,at least on the west bank. The impossible [GAZA] will take a little longer.
24. 9 - and then?
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (09.08.09)
the birth of the jewish state produced a thriving state that excelled in education, science, sports, technology, nobel laureates, and on and on. a palestinian state will continue to be an uneducated backwater terrorist-producing charity basket case as it has always been. sound familiar?
25. lol more like destroy they kill each other
ghostq   (09.08.09)
anyone who get his independence on iternal war is doomed from the start.
26. Jerusalem will never be devided
(09.08.09)
as for the rest I think there are some good points in his plan
27. One man cannot a state build. He needs help
JPS ,   Efrat   (09.08.09)
Fayyad appears to be a one-man band, and the only Pal in power with any vision. From my position, it appears that is biggest obstacle, as usual, is the Palestinians who simply refuse to do the work they themselves must do. Why work when you can hold out your hand and the world puts billions into it - which you can then skim off and parcel out to your buddies? That seems to be the Palestinian credo until now, and Fayyad is to be commended for saying enough is enough with the charity. It will be interesting to see if he has enough fellow Palestinians with any sway to help him. Me, I hope so.
28. SEC 164 is about Tunisia
Shai ,   IL   (09.08.09)
General Assembly Resolution 194 was about "just solutions" in the conflict he's referring to. But GAR's are not "binding" the way SEC's are.
29. Why the negative reactions ?
Philip ,   Afula,Israel   (09.08.09)
To Mike [24] how do you know what the future holds for the PALS, or are you just extroaloting your racist ideas.Fayyad is presenting a program of hope for his people, and if it works we will also benifit, unless people with ideas similar to yous snuff it out.Believe me, I support a two state solution because of big cultural differences between us and the PALS,but on the simple and basic human level I do hope that this good man will lead his people to peace and prosperity.I would have thought that you as a former American would have understood this.ie the good life for all.
