1. Nowhere to sit, they must now lay in the grass
Josh   (09.14.09)
2. Isn't that stuff expensive??
Eli ,   Jerusalem   (09.14.09)
Much better to give raspberry treat to the poor for Shabbos ... and leave the kids (people) alone. Let them talk, it raises NORMAL people.
3. What about tired and elderly shoppers.
Bartley Kulp ,   Haifa   (09.14.09)
These people do not think anything through.
4. Lay down in the grass? In Geula?!?!?
JPS ,   Efrat   (09.14.09)
Sorry Josh, but there is no grass in that neck of the woods. And Bartley in Haifa - there are no shoppers on Shabbat. Read the article, they do it erev shabbat, and no doubt the city workers spend money to clean the public places come Sunday, while the bank cleans its own steps.
5. what they are doing is a sin under jewish law
zionist forever   (09.14.09)
The attitudes these people have is almost like that of the Taliban .. men & women should not be allowed to sit and talk to each other. Although they are not killing people if they do this attempt to discourage it through is the same sort of Taliban thinking. Human beings were given freedom of choice and if a man & woman want to sit on a bench and talk then thats between them and G-D. Also did they ever stop to consider that other people who may want to sit on these benches maybe old or need to sit down for health reasons? They are making people things harder for people who need to sit down for health reasons because of their high minded attitudes. Jewish law does forbid wastage of food and this is a disgusting waste and could instead be enjoyed by others. Maybe its time for them to hear a few home truths that what they are doing is not only illegal under national laws but under jewish laws it is a sin not a mitzvah.
6. Raspberries
Mordchai ,   Manchester, UK   (09.14.09)
The photograph shows blackberries not raspberries.
7. Not Again?
NYC Girl   (09.14.09)
Just when you think you've heard it all about some of these religious extremists, they go and ratchet up the idiot quotient. In fact, maybe their next step should be pouring raspberry syrup all over unmarried men and women to force them to avoid having any physical contact. Actually, it's probably better not to put ideas in their heads.
8. Best they dont have any physical contact atall
Avi ,   Israel   (09.14.09)
That way they wont breed any more charideem and our lifes will be free of them forever, so please put rasberry jam everywhere they go , hopefully that will do the trick.
9. Orthodox jews becoming crazy
Philippe Delaporte ,   Marseilles France   (09.14.09)
You smear syrup on benches for couples not to meet ,is masturbation a better solution allowed by the jewish law?
10. IGNORENT PEOPLich than get blamed on the cradim
Shlomo ,   GEULA   (09.14.09)
All of you people just posting comments without knowing the real story. THe story here is that the young people who loiter on the benches and disturb everybody in the area are from out of the area and just come to have some fun which than get blamed on the charadim FOR EXAMPLE THE BEATING OF THE ARAB TAXI DRIVER " WEEKS AGO but dont worry just carry on bashing the charadim its only normal
11. #3...shopping in Geula on Shabat?!?
orli naaman ,   Jerusalem   (09.14.09)
12. Is it never good?
Daniel Breslauer ,   Jerusalem   (09.14.09)
When these 'loitering youths' (the so-called "shababnikim") attack Arab taxi drivers as they did last week, the media blames the "Edah Haredit" for it. When these loitering youths burn garbage cans, burn stores, terrorize citizens, throw rocks at buses, the media blames the "Edah Haredit" for it. And when the "Edah Haredit" undertakes serious steps to fight against these young criminals, who terrorize Jerusalem's Haredi neighborhoods, all you write is another very negative piece about the "Edah Haredit"! You people, who write all of these negative talkbacks, you have NO IDEA of what you are writing about. #2 - this is not about normal kids, this is about criminal 15 to 20-year olds who terrorize our neighborhoods. #3 - these are not the people being targeted. #5 - how often have you been there yourself? #7 - if you don't have anything serious, constructive to say, then rather say nothing at all. These 'youths' are not normal people. They are little criminals who terrorize our neighborhoods. I have seen them beating up innocent small children, spitting on women with babies, throwing rocks on buses, lighting fires on Shabbat, shouting very loudly in the middle of the night on Shabbat, throwing garbage cans on the road and then lighting them on fire, pushing old men, and I myself have almost been robbed by them. The police are completely uninterested. You never see police just patrolling Geula, they only come when there are 'riots'. Nobody cares about the behavior of these youths. After five such youths told me to give them my mobile phone, wallet and MP3 player while threatening me with a knife, and I ran, and called the police, the police told me that there was no unit available that could respond, because it wasn't an urgent matter, and I should just come to the station the next day to file a report. You people, who criticize these actions and these 'inspectors' organized by the neighborhood Vaad and the Edah, you have NO IDEA of what you are talking about. I'd like you, NYC Girl, to talk a walk around there and be attacked by these wild beasts. Let's see whether you'll still be shouting, when the Edah 'inspectors' save you from these criminals' hands. And Bartley Kulp, come take a look, I'd like to know what you have to say after you see these 'inspectors' send out (if necessary with a little physical assistance) these criminal youths after they spit on a pregnant women with little children in a stroller. And Eli, I'd love to see what you think after these 'kids' rob you of your wallet, mobile phone and any other valuable possesions.
13. O no you do that on buses, public transport ?
benjamin ,   singapore   (09.14.09)
Isnt there a limit to stupidity. The more you do this kind of anti- social acts you are breaking the law only showing the world that you are uncivilised. when you see Food/fruit , you give blessing B Ata ado.....you know, you dont abuse the creation ( fruits) of Hashem for your self-fish desires. Have respect for fruits the glory of the Lrd G-d the Creator of the seen and the unseen.Go an read bereshit, know mahaseh merkevah. ben singapore
14. Export Israeli fruits to Singapore...you know the Israeli
ben ,   singapore   (09.14.09)
Film Festival in singapore is very popular and in demand. Oi know the diffrence between rasberries and black berries !
15. This is beyond ridiculous
David ,   Silver Spring, MD, U   (09.14.09)
I can't wait for the story that the holy and pure daughter of Rabbi______ of the Eida Haredit, showed up at Shabbos dinner with raspberry syrup all the way up her back. By the way, is this magical syrup that won't stick to the pants of an elderly man who wants to rest for a few minutes on his way to shul?
16. #12 you are wrong
israel ,   israel   (09.14.09)
this is not about "shababnikim" or "young criminals, who terrorize Jerusalem's Haredi neighborhoods" this is about normal jewish kids who want to talk to eachother. I would reccomend they pick a different neighborhood to do hangout - but criminal it aint!
17. Danger Fanatic
Dani ,   Amsterdam NL   (09.14.09)
If they are looking for trouble just please gives some trouble to them. Personally if someone will act in this way against me I will smash his/her face with no regards.Remember violence call violence and you religious guy are out of law. Civil law and Halachik Law. You are a shame of Israel
18. Dani in the Netherlands
Matt   (09.14.09)
You will "smash their faces"? Is that how you are handling the Islamic thugs in your country? You know, the ones that murder film makers, burn cars, and threaten the lives of any police officer or politician that says anything about it.
19. 10 & 12 . Do you think we can accept this
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.14.09)
That , even disturbing , youths come specially to your place to disturb you . There are certainly nicer and better places in my capital where they can enjoy life
20. raspberry syrup
alan ash ,   new yprk ny   (09.14.09)
it would be better if they would learn how to bottle it and sell it at least that way they will make some money. when they smear that crap on the benches if there is even the slightest chance an elderly person who can not sit it is beyond a chillul hashem -or is it because they are so used to doing chillul hashem it does not bother them. the mayor should stop all services to any area that destroys property ,burns garbage bins and the like .if that is how they feel they will get results let them learn the hard way .they do not produce anyting for society but trouble,
21. What a waste
Chava Yosefa ,   Queens, NY   (09.14.09)
What a waste of food, and a waste of time! Even so, if I was in Jerusalem I would not want to hang out in that neighborhood anyway. I would not want to be taunted, publicly humiliated or made to be sticky in any way, shape or form by a bunch of ignorant Haredim. I'm sure they don't even bother to clean it up afterwards...
22. territorial and popluation exchange suggested
ben martin   (09.14.09)
give the PA mea shearim and its citizens for gush etzion and the national religious population in those settlements
23. Daniel #12 - Go preach to the choir.
Bartley Kulp ,   Haifa   (09.15.09)
I lived in Geula for two years. First of al Shabbabnikim do not participate in riots. They have their own problems but that is not one of them. Many of the garbage burners are Yeshiva students. I have also seen adults many times in the past fighting the police like lions. I am not suggesting that the Eidah as a whole is responsible for this, but their are elements their that are. Number one by spreading vitriol and number two by back-door condonment and collusion. I do not believe what you say that people are being mugged. Trust me. if the Eidah wanted to they could take these kids off the street using muscle. A couple of weeks ago the Eidah gave strict guidelines against violence at the parking lot and it ceased. Now there have been many proclomations written in the past that these people ignored. Here is a hint, Rabbi Poppenheim was a signatory to this. When it is convenient, there will be violence and when it is not it will mostly cease. Most of these riots are not what they seem about on face value. Enough said. If you read the book called "The bonfire of the vanities" all will become clear.
24. fact and reallity
Ellen ,   Israel/USA   (09.15.09)
I do not care WHO is sitting on the benches. It may be young residents, it may be outsiders, but making it impossible to sit is just wrong. As an Orthodox Women I have walked to the Kotel on Shabbat. AND I have stopped and sat when I needed to rest. I guess I am now forced to stand, because some people in the community don't want certain people sitting;. BTW the alledged hooligans are not sitting! RE: the supposed level of harrassement--throwing things, spitting, insulting--kinda like what some Haredi do if someone they dont' approve of walks by ( or if you want to park in the Karta lot) A number of years ago my friend's daughter, who was spending a year in Israel walked through Geula. She is from a family of limited means and it was a great financial sacrifice for her to be in Israel. She was wearing a long sleeved top and a long, wide, not form fitting jean skirt. Some piece of garbage through paint on her skirt--totally ruining it because "we dont' wear jean skirts" How dare he!! And does anyone wonder why so many people are anti-Haredi!
25. Time to make a pancake suit
mea   (09.15.09)
Silly? Attention getting? Ridiculous waste of effort against raging hormones? How about figuring out that people have sex and want to have more sex. New campaign: Rubbers yes, fruit syrup no. The ultra orthodox are very entertaining.
26. simple
dan   (09.15.09)
arrest them for vandalism. this kind of garbage can't be tolerated. a baton over their heads and handcuffs will start to teach people that they can't take the law into their own hands.
27. So who cleans Up
ehud ,   Phoenix, Arizona   (09.15.09)
So who cleans Up saturday night or early sunday. They can't sit then either? And the steps leading into the bank?Wouldn't this be close to vandalism?I understand the point but the methods are not right.
28. Bal Tashchis!
Y. Treitel ,   USA   (09.15.09)
