Sarah B ,   New York City, USA   (09.14.09)
Just a reality check, here. Assaf Ramon (z.l.) received his pilot's wings three months ago. Why was he piloting an F-16? And why didn't he eject? Probably because he did not have sufficient experience or flying time on this most complex of fighter jets. My heart and my deepest condolences go out to the Ramon family.
5. A terrible tragedy. Our sympathy to the family but .......
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (09.14.09)
We may have gone too far! An opinion was expressed on Israel Radio 2 (Reshet Bet) this morning that the media have turned this tragedy in to a “Media Festival”! Indeed, the Late Ilan Ramon, Asaf's father, was a national hero and we were all shocked at his death in the Columbia Tragedy. We saw Asaf get his Air Force Wings two months ago from President Peres and again national pride was stirred. However, Asaf was killed in a training accident doing what he loved most - flying. Last Friday morning another soldier, 20 year old Uri Chen of the Golani Brigade, was stabbed to death by a young man released from prison a few weeks ago. He too had a family who loved him and was proud of him. He was not taking part in something dangerous but walking in the street! Uri fought in Operation Cast Lead and earned a distinction. His Uncle is a Reserve Colonel in the IDF. The point is that when Uri was buried there were not Generals, MK’s no President, no Prime Minister, no Ministers and no VIP's. The TV did not dedicate hours of broadcast time to him! The question is the life of the child of a famous Israeli more worthy than that of another no quite so famous? No! No life is worth more than another and tomorrow most of the country will have forgotten the tragedy that has fallen on the Ramon and Chen families but the families or Asaf and Uri and so many others who have fallen in the service or our country will never forget the pain and the loss. Our deepest sympathy to all.
6. It is a testament to goodness in the world that brave men
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (09.14.09)
and women risk their lives in the goal of keeping others safe. They know there are risks and they put their lives on the line for goodness and safety of others. Israel is great for people like this. Other nations turn out scum, trash, garbage that kidnap people and build bombs to maim civilians. G-d has blessed Israel even as He has taken a good man from us. We will never understand why this happens as long as we are on this earth, maybe later it will be clear.
7. you are so right, David
Roberta ,   Tel Aviv   (09.14.09)
I agree with you completely. No Generals, MKs, President or Prime Minister, Ministers or VIPs were at the vast majority of those soldiers who fell heroically on missions either - missions which those self same public figures had sent them on such as Lebanon 2, or Gaza. It is all about publicity, I suppose. Sickening and the media follows suit.
8. jesusalen
jesus ,   jesusalen   (09.14.09)
the war is a lie because the leaders send to kill people for the land but the leaders never go there also the soldiers are forgotten after some years and never care about them and people are happy for having one day more for holydays.
9. Boo hoo hoo

10. Stop all building now in WB and Jerusalem!.

11. David, it is because the family has suffered such tragedy.
Claudia ,   Tampa USA   (09.14.09)
You are correct, that the murder of Uri Chen is no less a tragedy and I pray for his family no less. We place our hope in young men just like these two that have been taken, two more will bravely step up into their places and that is what is fine about society.
12. Sad day
Good ,   FL, USA   (09.14.09)
First I would like to send my condolences to the Ramon family and thank them for their service and scarifies for the state of Israel and humanity. David and Roberta, I agree with both of you that every fallen soldier is equally important and being a son or daughter of a celebrity does not make you more in any way. However, it will be impossible (practically), especially in Israel for all the dignitaries to attend every funeral. I think that when bringing someone like Asaf Ramon’s death to the forefront, the media is reviving the memory of all fallen soldiers, just like in a war, every and each soldier is a hero but we always hear only about a handful and get to know them by name. Also, if the media will spend a whole day on every casualty we will become immune to it and stop caring. God bless Israel.
13. Roberta&David-U both miss the point.

14. egine failure or vertigo
observer   (09.14.09)
Israel, with the world's largest F-16 fleet outside the USAF, has ordered 110 F-16I aircraft, of which the first was delivered in December 2003. These aircraft have Rafael weapons and sensors, including Litening II laser target designator pods. in 2000, Yonatan Begin, grandson of Menachem Begin crashed his F-16D-30F into the Mediterranean Sea. >>There are two types of pilots: those who have had vertigo and those who are going to get it " What about the co-pilot; there hasn't been any mention of him/her? has he/she got vertigo? Whether vertigo or engine failure the underlying cause is certainly the spirits of the Civilians killed in Gaza by the F16s.
15. to #10
Lior ,   Israel   (09.14.09)
We are going nowhere. We the people of God are here to stay on our land; the land of our people. Contrary to the fictitious people whose lives are built upon lies and hate we are going nowhere. Contrary to the fictitious people unwanted by their arab/islamic neighbors so the said ficticious people can be used and abused as a pawn in a quest to drive us to the sea.......TO BAD. We the people of this land and of the book are going nowhere. Jerusalem is the undivided capital of Israel. There is not a drop of proof which proves to the contrary except those lies driven by those who wish us harm. We the Jews of this land will not be divided nor torn apart.
16. Why with 3 months experiece was he flying solo in F16?
Alan ,   SA   (09.14.09)
Maybe the psychological urge to make him in the image of his father, the hero.Like Icarus he was allowed to fly too "high" maybe too soon ..

David, I hope you don't mind, but I 'borrowed' some of what you said about Uri and put it on my FB page. I didn't know about Uri Chen!!

In order to fly solo hundreds of hours of flying such an aircraft are logged. This obviously was perhaps a human mistake made by a beloved son of Israel of blessed memory. Most tragically as in any death of our beloved soldiers it tears our hearts to pieces. It is proven the same horrific accident can and does happen even to the most 'seasoned' of veteran. To #9 boo hoo hoo....and others of that ilk,if the so-called 'Palestinians' had a state for 150 years never could they produce such a miracle as what we in Israel live each day. Matter of fact nowhere in the whole of the ME is this miracle evident expect in the land on which I walk. You should be the one wiping your eyes which contains your self-imposed blindness spurned by abject hate, virulent accusations and down-right ignorance. While our nation mourns once again it is done so with deep rooted pride and sense of purpose.

24. 2: God takes the best for Himself because He is entitled to.
Rivkah   (09.15.09)
He also takes what is naturally most dear to people He loves to bring them closer to Him. The physical body goes to sleep at death, the spirit goes back to God and the soul goes to a place of torment or comfort. The souls of those who are beheaded for the Lord's sake go to a place under the altar of God and ask the Lord for vengeance on the inhabitants of the earth. They can speak. So it is likely souls that were not beheaded can also speak and that father and son Ramon are comforting each other as Abraham comforted Lazarus in the story told by Rabbi Yeshua.
25. WOW this is so tragic and unbelievably sad:-(
(09.15.09)
My condolences to the Ramon family
26. May Cpt Ramon rest in peace
Hassan ,   USA   (09.15.09)
May Allah grant his family the strength to carry on and may Allah bless the people of Israel and all their fallen martyrs. May Allah the Lord of this world bring ever lasting peace between us the Arabs and our Jewish brothers so we will no longer mourn our sons and daughters.
27. #6-Good words
John ,   Boise, idaho USA   (09.15.09)
You have written what I think needs to be conveyed and understood by the rest of the human race-Israel is a very good nation indeed. The Jews have done so much for the well being of mankind that it would take many, many writings to list it all. God has found favor with Israel.Thank you for your insight..
28. There simply aren't any words...
Talula ,   Israel   (09.15.09)
Strong, brave, condolences - nothing begins to describe the pain. The Ramon family are deep in my thoughts and I send them love from the deepest place in my soul.
29. peres dont make speeches make sure F16s are made safe
zionist forever   (09.15.09)
If Peres wants to do something worthwhile don't make nice speeches about the dead instead make sure that the IAF grounds the F16s until an investigation can be done on every single plane so there will be no more accidents. The plane Asaf Ramon was flying was an F16 A from 1980 which should have been retired by now. So Peres stop making speeches, stop your obsession with the peace process and start working on doing some good amongst your own people for a change.
30. where was peres at the memorial for soldiers killed in Leban
zionist forever   (09.15.09)
Asaf Ramon had an accident and what we have seen as a result is almost a national day of mourning. Where are the politicans when other soldiers are killed in accidents or even combat? In july 2009 a tank overturned in the Golan Heights killing one of its crew members. All we got was a small story on sites like this which were gone the next day and a military funeral. No speeches from any poiticians, nobody was lighting memorial candles in the streets. In 2007 the then new president elect Peres PM Olmert. Foreign minisrter Livni. Chief of staff Dan Halutz. Minister of defence Amir Peretz Non of them attend the 1 year memorial service over 100 soldiers who were killed in Lebanon in 2006. The new president didn't attend a memorial for alot of men killed in combat defending the country. Now a single man dies in a training accident he is taking time out to come to the funeral and make nice speeches. The only reason Assaf Ramon is getting this special treatment is because of who his father was and although I am sure Assaf deserves this credit it does make the loss of men without such famous names seem less important to the country.
