31. We should have the same time like Moscow!
Miriam ,   Nazareth-Illit   (09.28.09)
We have still the time of the British they imposed on us before 100 years! This is a totally wrong time and costs the society a lot of money. We are on the same time line as Moscow!!!!! Only the haredim don't like to have the correct time, because it is not convenient for their prayers!!
32. 6 weeks earlier than the USA and Europe?
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (09.28.09)
For a one day fast that is partially spend sleeping and the rest spent sitting in a (usually) airconditioned synagogue? Unlike 9th of Av, not working? Yeah, sounds like capitulation to me.
33. # 29 NYC Girl, Yes this has always
Sagi   (09.28.09)
been my contention. Mutual respect, but unfortunately society, for some incomprehensible reason, has decided that the secular majority, including dedicated atheists like myself, must respect, and indeed give way to, where necessary, the clergy, holy men,men of the cloth and in general the run of the mill religious folks. On the other hand these folks are not obliged,by the same token of understanding, to respect you or me. Is this a good basis for mutuality as you suggest ? I think not. This is especially true in the Jewish religion, in Israel in particular, where, as you know, there is zero tolerance for non believers and non observers who are subject to sighs and cries of disdain from the "holy men". I shall always respect someone who can show respect for me, even if I believe him or her to be an outright crank and a weirdo. No one in this world has the right to impose beliefs and religion on others, not through coercion and certainly not through legislation. Religion is a private matter and an individual must keep it that way.The greatest fault of The State of Israel is the non separation of State and religion. Until this cardinal legislation is passed Israel will never be able to achieve her place among the great democracies of this world, never. This is a sine qua non. Israel is not a democracy, as she stands today,in spite of the fact that we have a ballot box. The components of the Government, the everyday running of the administration does not, and never has, reflected the outcome of the ballot. The subject under debate here is just one instance where the majority wish one thing and the minority achieve their goal. Democracy? I think not.
34. this is not capitulation to the haredim
observer   (09.28.09)
unless you consider the vast majority of the population (ie those that fast) as haredim. It is consideration for the elderly and frail who find it hard to fast and for whom fast one last hour less during the day is important. It's not the beginning of the fast that is difficult: it is the end. The majority of the haredim you so hate and despise couldn't really care if the fast finishes an hour earlier or later. In urope and america, the fast finishes around 8.00pm and everyone manages just fine. Likewise throughout the rest of the year, the extra hour is not important - in fact it actually works in favour of the haredim! Eg: the latest time to correctly complete one's prayers is now 9.30 - not a big deal on weekdays when we have to get to work, but a bane on Sabbath when we'd prefer to sleep a little longer.
35. Whatever the hara-dim want they should
jason white ,   afula,israel   (09.28.09)
never get. They give nothing to the state and we should give them nothing in return!
36. Jews in the diaspora
Michel ,   Jerusalem   (09.29.09)
The Jews in Europe end the fast at 7 or 8pm.. without suffering. So why would Israelis have difficulties ?
37. Shame on all of you!
Aviva ,   Jerusalem   (09.29.09)
Why does it take something so trivial as a change of clock for you all to break out into such seething hate against people who are doing you no harm? BTW I am haredi, my husband is haredi, we both work, my husband and my sons do army service, and instead of treating us like equals with you, you make fun of us and call us "mustards" and you ignore our contribution to society. This is a time of year when all Jews should reconcile with each other. BTW ending the fast at 7:15 instead of 6:15 is no hardship at all for the Haredim, and and it should be easier for the many, many seculars who do fast. So what are you complaining about, except just for the sake of complaining?
38. In the USA the clocks are set back before Halloween
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (09.29.09)
In the USA the clocks are set back the last week in October, so the little kiddies can enjoy trick or treat after dark. Is this a capitulation to the Halloween novelties and candy industry?
