That any nation, let alone one founded on the principles of Judaism, would require military service of its youth is unacceptable. We tend to forget that, prior to the settlement of Israel, most jews lived in arab lands free from the antisemitism that was fervent throughout europe. Agression against israel is not inherent to arabs, it is rather a product of the unequal treatment meted to palestinians and Arabs who's input in this discourse has been ignored. Moreover, it seems many respondents here fail to see the difference between israel, the state, and israel, the spiritually promised land. The two are not the same, and spiritual justifcations for israel should not be confused or used to defend/rationalize actions of the state. Governments are run by people- who are corruptible, selfish, and not infallible. The israeli government is no exception. without the billions in cash and State of the art weaponary provided by the US, the israeli military could hardly afford to house recruits, let alone require service. While i harbor no critcism against the spirtual concept of israel, i will say without regret that the government itself is a sock-puppet for the west, a pawn of proximity, whose western support is provided as a means to an end, not out of the collective goodness of the heart (very little of that in the west). And more than that, after serving time in jail - no access to any university or college that benefits from public funding, and no access to jobs in public sector.
