1. Why did they target him ?
Marcel ,   Florida   (10.23.09)
Why was this man specifically set up and Israel the target country ? Maybe he didn't vote for Obama or said some true things about him ? Easy answer.Israel has a strong pro-Israel base of support in America and this was a SET UP,a purposeful entrapment to further erode this strong support. They had to find someone who would easily fall into their trap and want to help a friend in need at the same time ,a US ally. They were not shopping for the China brand this time ,they're holding too many US dollars and that makes them a harder target.Israel is the easy target always a preferable scapegoat. Israel has already been made a pariah nation in the world by Satan and his world wide emissaries, the US is intentionally digging the hole a little deeper. This only brings more guilt on Israel and pressure to toe the US line or else it's only friend in the world will throw her overboard. It's pre-meditated pressure on Israel guilty of nothing except not willing to play the part of Czechoslovakia in the latest appeasement sell out drama to evil Nazi like Islamic forces. The anti-Israel Islamic world is very happy only weeks after one of their own,al queda connected Najibullah Zazi was arrested in Denver for attempting to use WMD's to kill as many Americans as he could. There is no comparison between the two as the government media would hope to make with the American people to bring Israel down. That is their evil game ,their goal because the Saudi's and their oil own us now. They are no longer trading exclusively in US dollars and this is terminal for the US economy and so the US has to cater to Saudi interests or suffer more damage. Look for more anti-Israel attacks from the US government coming soon. The US has a long track record of betraying friends and allies. The Shah of Iran ,the South Vietnamese are just a few of many. This is where America in free fall is now setting up Israel for a further fall from grace. It has to shed the long held special bond to cater to the Islamic world for purient interests. The Federal Bureau of Incompetence could have just as easily used Russia or China or some Islamic country as the target nation of benefit but it was a one time very close ally and strong friend in the heart of the Islamic region. This was planned at the highest levels of government to further damage a once strong alliance. This FBI sting benefits the anti-Semites and takes the heat off the Islamic terrorists always being arrested here for their attempts to blow up things and brings down Israel to their level. It removes Israel from status of friend and sets it up as an enemy not to be trusted on the same level as the terrorists they will never call Islamic. They are leveling the playing field so as not to look biased in favor of Israel to the Islamic world. Watch for the US government and their media lackeys to play this up in the news to assuage the Moslem's here in the US and world wide that the US no longer has a special bond with Israel.

Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (10.23.09)
at least he's not Jewish. Thank goodness for small favors ... the Pollard episode was damaging enough. And -- despite my great love for Israel -- "friends" like Nozette and Pollard we do not need. I would have had no problem seeing Pollard executed for treason (no, not espionage -- treason) and while Nozette's crimes were not executable offenses, I wouldn't have a problem seeing him on Death Row, either. My flaw, I guess, is that I love the United States, too. And I don't trust spies.

Why was this man specically targeted? Because he is spying for Israel IAI weapon manufacturing company. Moreover why he asked for an Israeli passport and not any other passport. He must be locked up forever because he knows too much.

david cohen ,   China   (10.23.09)
why did they target him? this could have been a standard investigation. the question is why did they target Israel. look at the titles all over the press: "TRIED TO PRVIDE ISRAEL WITH CLASSIFIED INFORMATION". every simpleton in the US and the arab world thinks that Israel was behind this operation... thank u Obama.

nozzete is NOT JEWISH AND NEITHER IS HIS WIFE. PERIOD. SO, THAT ASIDE... he would have done this sell out of american tech secrets EVEN IF A POLISH OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY PERSON POSING AS THIS COUNTRY....HE WOULD HAVE SOLD THE SECRETS. israel has nothing to do with this and neither has her government. period! the department of state, antisemetic and pro arabist has always had a nack for going against israel and israelis. the fbi in particular has been working with this government all along. the poser could have posed as a french national seeking american tech secrets and nozette would have agreed to cooperate. he didn't do it FOR ISRAEL. he did it for himself and for MONEY! there is no connection between israel here and nozette. period. the question remains...WHY IS AMERICA TARGETTING ISRAELIS???? WHY NOT CHINA, WHY NOT THE ARAB GOVERNMENTS? WHY? WHY ONLY ISRAELIS? china as we speak is actively targetting american computers in a secret war to obtain cyberwarefare secrets. read the government doccuments to see this. why do they always use a poser posing as a mossad? what do we really have against israel??? do you think the usa doesn't have spies and also people willing to give secrets out to china, russia, the arab block??? how naive can you be. enough with implicating israel over and over again. israel gave the usa more technology and military secrets and intelligence on terrorism around the arabian penninsula as well as in europe and the usa for years and years. without israeli intelligence, both europeans and american would have never stopped the terror cells in their countries. wake up. america nad europe benefit much more from israeli espionage against terrorism as well as its military and technological advances than israel benefits from the usa and europe. hameed aboughaze, iranian

he asked for an israeli passport because the fbi agent was posing as an israeli. nozette also knew that he should ask the poser not only for money, not only for protection, but insisted that if the poser was serious, and if nozette was going to divulge secret information then nozette wanted to MAKE SURE he will be protected by the country that this poser represents....israel.... where he can escape prosecution in the usa by being granted AN ISRAELI PASSPORT. this was nozette's way to make sure he can run away. it could have been a poser that claimed he was european, french, british, and nozette would have agreed to give him the info for money AND AN ENGLISH PASSPORT OR FRENCH PASSPORT AS A PRIOR BEFORE DIVULGING THE SECRETS. he did it not for the love of israel or for his need to give israel any secrets. he would have done it even if a french or british poser came to him with this request. nozette, even in this case, would have still asked for a british passport or a french one so that he can escape. you know he did this for money regardless of what country this poser said he was from.... he never seeked israel to give her secrets at all. he was trapped by a poser playing an israeli part. it could have been any other country and nozette would have done the same. it is the love of money, not the love of israel that motivated him. now, if nozetter actually tried to get in touch with an israeli to sell secrets, that woukld have been qa different matter entirely and you could have claimed that he wanted to give israel secrets. but this is not the case her. do not try to make something here out of nothing because you dislike israel. this case is pure and simple not a patriotic case but a case of greed and love of money. I AM SURE THAT NOZZETE COULD CARE LESS WHO HE GAVE THE SECRETS TO AS LONG AS THE MONEY WAS GOOD...AND THIS IS THE CRUX OF IT ALL. NOTHING TO DO WITH ISRAEL HERE AT ALL.

9. #3, except he wasn't spying
Danny   (10.23.09)
Israel never asked him to spy and had the FBI not set him up he would never have committed this "crime". If that is not a classical case of entrapment, not sure what is. I note this is the same FBI that was perfectly happy to employ a women whose brother is a known senior member of Hizbollah and who was sacked after passing information to Hizbollah - note that no criminal charges were brought against her.... Lets see if this gets any further than the "spying" done by AIPAC.
10. Something's Strange
Christy ,   Boston, US   (10.23.09)
First, I don't like spies and if this is a legit. case then I am behind prosecuting this man as a spy. However, with all the other stuff that's been going on regarding Israel lately, I confess that something about this just doesn't 'feel' right. Can't put my finger on what exactly it is, it just doesn't feel right to me. I think it might be because it seems like just something else to add to the pile against Israel. Comes at a convenient time, with the Goldstone report and all.

Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (10.23.09)
He was targeted -- as are quite a few, actually -- because they are born-again or evangelical Christians who love Israel. Truth be told -- Israel doesn't need that kind of help. It is far more harmful than helpful, and no one can trust a spy.

Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (10.23.09)
Chill out, dude. The Walker Family and Robert Hansen were far more damaging to the United States than any other spies in history. They were not Jewish. The Walker Family were WASPs, and Robert Hansen was a devout Roman Catholic. So what's your problem? They spied for the Soviet Union and Russia. Far more damaging than Pollard, and Nozette only THOUGHT he was spying for Israel -- he wasn't; he was the target of a sting operation.
13. Harold, Syracuse #3 and Sarah #2
Tahl ,   Ashdod, Israel   (10.23.09)
Harold learn to read. Nowhere in the story does it say that this man was actually spying for Israel, certainly not the IAI... This is all a figment of your Israel-hating imagination. Moreover, the FBI itself clarified that there was no wrongdoing at all on Israel's part. This was a classic case of entrapment. It looks like the impotent FBI, eager to gain some positive PR, does it on the expense of Israel of course, the easy scapegoat - and entices a man in need to perform a crime. Who cares if it only heightens the antisemitic flames in America, which have risen considerably ever since Obama took office. Certainly all the Israel-haters like yourself would swallow this bait whole. In any case, mere entrapment cannot serve as grounds for putting someone in jail for too long. However, recent decades have taught us that America isn't exactly renowned for its due process by law. Sarah - I can't believe this is you posting here, because your comments are shocking. Pollard revealed America's secrets, yet his actions did not cause a huge, irreversible damage to America, unless you buy into that usual Israel-hating propaganda. It's not like he sold this info to the USSR or China - but to Israel, America's close ally. And you know what, this info actually helped us a great deal here, during the first Gulf War. Still, I can see why Americans would be upset with him, and I agree that he should have been put to jail. And so he was. He served his time and fully paid his debt to society. The US government then VIOLATED his plea bargain. How fair is that? Clearly this was due to sheer vengefulness and antisemitism. As for Nozette, I've already touched upon the kosherness of his arrest. As I said, hardly due process. And now you, who constantly speak of the horrors of ruthless Muslim dictatorships that freely kill people for frivolous reasons - want both of these people on death row. Now I didn't ask you to betray America, but at least show some compassion for those people who were willing to risk themselves for Israel's interests. True, they may have stepped over the line (one of them with the active assistance of the FBI) and may deserve punishment, but there is no room for being so heartless. There is no "flaw" in loving the US, I love it too. But you can love the US and have a heart too. Otherwise you are just as bad as those Israelis who wouldn't want to live next to SLA fighters who shed their blood for us, since they "just don't trust spies". Normally I admire your posts, but now you are clearly out of it.
14. Wrong #3; he was actually spying for the FBI.
AK   (10.23.09)
Israel has nothing to do with this. A man, who appears to be in the middle of a nervous breakdown is approached by the FBI and enticed to spy for a foreign country, namely Israel. If he had worked for an Israeli company in the past, he must have gotten clearance and if suspected of spying, picked up then. Querry: why didn't they choose China or SA or better yet India, where he allegedly misplaced some computer drives as a hook? Why is the FBI trying soooo hard to smear Israel while looking the other way when Hezbollah infiltrates their own organization. Did Pouty, or what's her name serve any time? The whole thing was very much hushed up and the woman worked not only for the FBI but for the CIA in Afghanistan. How much info she compromised? How many Americans died because of her? We will never know any of those answers. But we'll know instead that a scientists was allegedly successfully entrapped by the FBI into spying for what he believed was Mossad.

Please do not forget that I hold dual citizenship. I am American as well as Israeli. Jonathan Pollard did more damage to Israel's standing with the United States than any single other spy. He was an "ideological" spy, which is to say that he did what he did for fanaticism, not financial remuneration. That said, Pollard is a United States citizen, and committed a crime -- a rather serious one, actually. And spies can never be trusted. Israel did not then, and does not now, need the help of American spies. I think that you will find that among the Jewish community in the United States, there are at least as many -- if not more -- detractors of Pollard's actions as supporters. We can love and help Israel without being disloyal to the United States.

Nozette told his espionage contact that his parents were Jewish people, and therefore claimed a right to return under Israel's Law of Return and asked for an Israeli passport. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewart_Nozette http://www.forward.com/articles/117301/.

Most of what you say about Pollard may be true, however you are avoiding the points I raised. First - Pollard served out his time, paid his debt to society and should have been a free man long ago, had the US government didn't make a crass violation of his plea-bargain, due to sheer vengefulness. I see Americans blaming against Pollard all the time, where is their blaming of their government for acting so un-democratically? Second, saying Pollard and Nozette belong in death row is disgusting and abhorrent. Pollard risked his life for us, and although he indeed committed a crime, he had done very little actual damage to America, he helped Israel a great deal, and his ideological motives can be appreciated. Nozette technically didn't even commit a crime. As a Jew, you can still be loyal to America, without asking for their blood. And by the way, a loyal American patriot should be very much concerned with his or her government's violation of a prisoner's constitutional rights. And yes, I would definitely trust a spy who risked his life for my safety.

so what if he was? does that even tie his actions to israel? no! if a chinese impostor and poser came to him to ask him to spy for china and nozette may have worked for a chinese company, does that mean that the chinese government sent a spy to ask him to spy on america?? no! israel is not involved here. the fbi agent is not israeli nor jewish. HE IS A POSER!!! to entrap nozette. it could have been a chinese poser and nozette would have divulged information whether he worked for a chinese company or not. the man wanted money. that is all. it has nothing to do with israel. it could have been any country as long as it paid handsomly. hameed aboughaze, iranian

How would you feel about an Israeli who spied for the United States? Does that make it any more palatable? I don't look beyond the word "spy." I really don't particularly care which country benefits from the espionage. And if you are looking to fault anyone, it should not be the federal judge who decided not to abide by the plea bargain (and he is well within his rights to do so, by the way). Pollard sought sanctuary in the Israeli Embassy, which was refused. Blame the Ambassador. What violation of constitutional rights?
28. Entrapment by AntiSemites
Brod ,   USA   (10.23.09)
There seems to be a move by AntiSemites to harass and persecute Jewish scientists working in America by using entrapments. This is detrimental to America's technological advancement because they are targeting America's top scientists who are mainly Jews. This is another move by the Obama AntiSemite administration.
29. To Sarah, #27
Tahl ,   Ashdod, Israel   (10.23.09)
Regarding the violations of Pollard's rights - call it constitutional rights, Miranda rights or whatever (I admit I'm no expert on these terms) - in democratic country like the US, everyone has the right to a fair trial, and due process by law. If a defendant signs a plea-bargain, the state has to honor that. You cannot have, all of a sudden, some higher entity that would disrespect and annul this agreement. The federal judge being "well within his rights" to do so, is very troubling, and does not sit well with the US being an enlightened democracy. And still, the federal judge did not make his decision in a vacuum - it was a purely political decision by the Reagan Administration, led by Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. So much for the separation between the branches! How would I feel about an Israeli who spied for the US? Probably similarly as how Americans would feel toward Pollard, but: 1. I wouldn't be asking for his blood, 2. If a plea-bargain deal was made and violated by government pressure, then yes, I would be calling for him to free, and 3. He would have less sympathy than Pollard, since the US would not need Israeli intel because it's under some existential threat. Unlike you, I do trust people who risk their lives for my safety. I would trust Pollard, I would trust an SLA fighter, and I would trust Oscar Schindler had he been alive today.
30. To: Tahl at No. 29
Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (10.23.09)
Tahl, there are State laws (which vary from state to state among the 50 states) and there is Federal law. Espionage is a federal crime, and as such, is tried in a federal court. People have a lot of misconceptions about the Pollard case. First of all, there was no plea bargain in effect. Pollard pled guilty in exchange for "sentencing consideration." He got consideration. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. He COULD have gotten the death penalty. The federal system does not allow for parole, so absent a presidential pardon, Pollard will spend the rest of his life in jail. I grant you that he received the same sentence as individuals who spied for money and for countries with which the United States does not enjoy a collegial relationship. Some of them are among the most damaging spies in history. But that does not mitigate the fact that Pollard spied, was caught red-handed and pled guilty. Pollard was not a stupid man; he knew exactly what he was getting into and opted to take the risk. I remind you again that he was denied sanctuary by the Israeli government; Israeli officials at the Embassy in Washington DC handed him over to the U.S. federal authorities.
