31. Miriam K. 27 . A 100 % Jew say : you're RIGHT
Charles ,   Petach Tiklva   (11.09.09)
And i'm secular . No need for fake converts , for tchic tchac ones . Those who truly want to become Jewish , as some are writing , why don't they do it in a serious way .
32. Miriam K , # 27 . You are RIGHT
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.09.09)
We don't need fake or "tchic tchac" converts . Those who truly want to convert , as some are writing , why don't they do it in a serious way ? And , as is known , i'm a 100 % Jew , but secular .
33. David , Nethanya
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.09.09)
I can't believe that someone who wants truly to be Jewish , don't want to convert at the Rabbanut . All what you wrote against this conversion are only excuses in my eyes . Did you hear about the "refusniks" ? those USSR Jews who wanted to make Alyah ? They endured much difficulties , were imprisoned , rejected from their jobs , and so on . This all to achieve their goal . Do as they did , endure some difficulties , but you will be rewarded and not rejected anymore .
34. 22 Sad story but the ball is in your court
Eliyahu ,   Yrushalayim   (11.09.09)
According to halacha a Jew may only marry a Jew. If conversion is an option then you must, otherwise you must separate. You cannot blame the people that hurt you and will hurt you for not doing what is right. Yisrael only lives forever by keeping the Derech HaSheim, the Torah.
35. Judaism is no longer Torah alone
Josh   (11.09.09)
Because so much is not Torah, converts should do your homework before converting. Last thing anyone wants is to be abused and distant from G-d. Too bad the mitzvah of loving the convert is not observed by so many. Nothing short of criminal the misteachings.

37. I testify to #22 and #24
John ,   Europe   (11.09.09)
We in our community had a goy, who was there since the forming of religious "section" (you have to know that my county is an ex-communism country and during that period there were no religious services: what nazis didn't kill, communists forbade). So, that goy was coming on every shabat, was keeping mitzvot much more than ANY other by-jew-born-jew, was helping community, giving tzedaka etc. During this period, he was looked upon. Everybody could tell it. I witnessed many occasions when "religious" people were mocking that guy. Of course, he was never good enough. But, since the community was struggling and Jews were "falling" because of internal clashes, jealousy and gossips, even minyan was jeopardized. When it happened that there were no minyan for Yom Kippur and about one year, almost entirely, the decision was made to convert some people. That goy was selected upon them, but, of course, AFTER some interventions of some people who thought that what is done to him is - wrong. And he converted. A bullet-proof gjur, I might add (which means, people who converted him are well known and respected). BUT NOTHING CHANGED! Grand rabbis left and they continued to treat that goy as a "lower" person. Now I don't know what happened with him, since I left that community. I was orthodox once, I admit it. But many things, including the case I wrote, influenced my attitude that I do not want to be religious. If THEY are going to Olam haBa, I DO NOT WANT TO. Oh, in the end - that goy waited OVER 10 years for his chance for conversion...
38. Re: #22
Michael ,   Petach Tikva   (11.09.09)
All Jews that have ever been converted by the chief rabbinate are still considered Jews by the chief rabbinate, and all Jews who are not Haredi (which are the vast majority of Jews in Israel). You actually have no significant excuse not to convert. I can see a few small excuses like annoyance that Hareidim might not accept you... but do you plan to be Hareidi? Here's some books to start reading: http://www.torahandisrael.com/recommended_reading.html כל טוב

Eliyahu ,   Yrushalayim   (11.09.09)
whole Torah or you are not in the covenant - born a Jew, convert, or would be convert.
40. Conversion
Gila ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.09.09)
A convert is as Jewish as anyone born to it, and deserves to be treated with respect. Where one person who apparently was converted halachically subsequently has that conversion annulled, that has a hugely oppressive effect on all converts, however genuine. There are many commandments in the Torah requiring us to love the convert. However, there is an apparent suggestion from the way the article is written that Alina never accepted and took on all the mitzvot in the first place. If this were actually the case, then her conversion was at best questionable. However, it appears that it is Maksim who has not accepted all the mitzvot. Although many halachic authorities would never have converted Alina in such circumstances, that is now completely irrelevant. He was born Jewish. As Alina has apparently been converted halachically, even where there might be room for some doubt after the fact, nevertheless the authorities should accept her as a Jew. This I believe is the halachic position regarding conversion accepted in the time of the Gemara.
41. Missionaries
Tirtza M. ,   Israel   (11.09.09)
I myself have personally met people who converted in order to missionize to the Jewish People. This is a fact. You can probably call Yad L'Achim in Jerusalem. They are an anti-missionary organisation and know what is going on.
42. Judaism Is Progressive
Avner ,   Europe   (11.09.09)
Occasionally, I play with the idea of moving to Israel and become part of the only Jewish state there is. But when I read stuff like this, I realize that Israel is not for me. The Israeli-style of Judaism seems increasingly hostile to everyone who does not subscribe to the most extremist interpretation of Halacha. Traditional Judaism was not like that. When I read 2 Kings 4 last week, I realized that it was implied in the scripture that Jews used to ride their donkeys on the Sabbath, which I found kind of funny considering the debate in recent time about driving to shul and the turmoil in Jerusalem over a car park. I realize now that the Jews back then would probably be stripped of their Jewish status had the Haredim been around. After all, they did not obey to the Haredi interpretation of Halacha. I can imagine that someone might say that I'm wrong because someone born to Jewish women is always a Jew. True, but if rabbis break with tradition by stripping converts of their Jewish status, what keeps them from taking the next step? And even if rabbis will not do that, aren't the new rules turning Judaism into a biology-defined race rather than a religion-defined people? Well, I think you Israeli Jews should do something about these overly strict rabbis before it's too late.
43. Convert NOT EQUAL Jewish
Jimmy37 ,   Brooklyn, NY   (11.09.09)
In this secular world, people are taught that intentions without action is enough. And that action without guidance is enough. A person's conversion doesn't automatically make that person Jewish. Just because a non-Jew decides to keep all the mitzvot doesn't make them Jewish, either. It takes both, a proper conversion and a religious life to make one Jewish.
44. I'm with you #22
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.09.09)
45. Sue the state if they won't let you get married.
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.09.09)
If you both have Israeli ID cards, and the state won't recognize your marriage sue the state for discrimination. Don't play with the Rabbinate because they change the rules as they go and you can never win. If enough people do this instead of going abroad to get married everything will soon change for the better.
46. 28 , only who's concerned about fake conversions , reacts
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.09.09)
47. Charles, why are you so worried about fake converts?
Oren   (11.10.09)
Usually when I see this type of obsession with a subject, I suspect that the individual deep down is afraid that some secret about their past may come to light? It seems like may be your mother, grandmother, great grandmother are probably not Jewish. Don't worry, the Russians you are so quick to attack will keep a spot for you in the back of the line. Just make sure you do it the orthodox way, OK?
48. Convert = Jew, No Beit Din = No Jew
Eliyahu ,   Yrushalayim   (11.10.09)
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but they are not entitled to the facts. It is the decision of the Beit Din and then it is done. Why don't you just ask your local Beit Din. Of course if you don't have one then you have separated yourself from the Jewish people. That takes care of the non-observants = seculars. Talk about fake Jews!!!!!
49. Who is a jew?
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (11.10.09)
It is reasonable to expect converts to follow Jewish laws; however, the problem is by whose definition of Jewish law should they follow. Conversion to Judaism is supposed to use the example of Ruth, but many other practices were added latter such as the need to study. But most of all these Rabbis seem to have forgotten that in Nazi Germany any one with the slightest connection to Judaism was sent to the camps. The number of Jews in the world is diminishing we should accept anyone who wants to be Jewish into our fold and do away with this divisive practice of using only one definition of who is a Jew.
50. Oren , don't worry for my Jewishness
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.10.09)
I dislike fake converts because they are FAKE and deceiving people . Only to give you as an example this guy from Raanana , it's against him that i mostly write . My Jewishness : on my mother's side , known to me are five generations . On my father's side , at least 20 , when my ancestors came to Poland from Turkey .

and not doing a very good job at it either. we understand it's a tough sell that one has to swallow the entire dodgy paradigm for everything to make sense. that's the way it usually works with groups with those types of leaders. but if it works for you personally, i'm glad you found something that makes you happy.
52. #50 Charles - We know you well, you need not explain
benjamin ,   singapore   (11.11.09)

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.11.09)
But it was an answer to 47 .
54. why accept converts?
Rahel   (01.02.10)
if keeping the blood line pure ( nightmares of Arian proportions- how Jews could forget) is so all important, why not just forbid conversions?- You wouldbe a slowly diminishing Jewish nation- going the way of the Dinosaurs- but PURE- . Better pure than extinct? Why let all those people make aliya- many of them will never be able to get married in Israel-?
