1. Kol ha'kavod!
Sarah B ,   New York / Saviyon   (11.13.09)
What a nice counter to those spoiled and selfish teenagers who are refusing to do military service, or who claim religious "modesty" exemptions (while frequently being found weekends in various stages of undress in nightclubs). Thankfully, these brats and draft dodgers comprise a tiny minority of Israeli society. People serve in Israel's combat units with pride and distinction, and these units represent some of the best military units anywhere in the world.
2. that's right, #1, and
phepps ,   Netanya   (11.13.09)
this figure of over two-thirds requesting combat units puts the lie to all the negative talk about erosion of Israeli society and esp. its youth. It's the same brave, cohesive Israel as always.
3. The Pride and Joy
Jeffrey ,   Boston   (11.13.09)
These kids are the rock solid backbone that will serve the Jewish state well in the future. I thank G*d every day for the strong will of the Jewish people.
4. If you knew bitter facts....
Tayfun_Turkey ,   Istanbul   (11.13.09)

James ,   Israel   (11.13.09)
I don't think Ynet has censured your post. Why not try again? If you only knew the many times I have been trying to get my ONE post published at JPOST you'd understand my frustration.Like you I am thinking:is there a reason behind it?.Could it be that Ynet is as busy as the rest of Israeli newspapers--being innundated with too many responses? Go get to it Tayfun.Doesn't hurt a bit.
7. To Sarah B@1 yes kol hakavod ..
Kate ,   Israel   (11.13.09)
To these youngsters who cherish the vital interests toward Israel, and prepared to serve with distinction. To the so-called fundementalist Jews supposedly refusing to serve, while enjoying themselves at said amusements. They are the bane of Israel and should be treated with the contempt they deserve. Tell you what though, they'd soon beg to put their life on the line, were they to encounter DANGER..
8. To Tayfun an addendum
James ,   Israel   (11.13.09)

9. That number should fall to record lows...

14. Marco, you're so out of it
Robert Haymond ,   Ashdod, Israel   (11.14.09)
I think God put you here to test our endurance. Israelis are not frightened by war. If you were to reside in Israel for a while and become acquainted with Israelis as opposed to being an American expatriate in Spain you'd soon meet people who have been in three, four, even five wars. For Israelis, war is a natural phenomenon. I know it's hard for you to comprehend. Israelis are not scared of any Arab military and certainly not Hezbollah. for all the rants and ravings of Hezbollah's leaders. Hezbollah recognized during the last little bust-up what Israel could do to it. If there's a next time, be assured, Israel will completely defeat Hezbollah in a way that you and your kind will find astonishing. But Israelis are not like Arabs. We do not boast nor become hysterical. We know we are powerful and we know that Arabs do not understand anything but force. That's how we came to agreements with Egypt and Jordan and that's how it will be with Lebanon, once we knock out Hezbollah. No matter how much they train and how many weapons they receive from Iran, Hezbollah will never be a match for us. Once you've got that figured out, Marco, then coach your fellow Arabs into accepting us as a legitemate nation state in the mideast and then there will be a possibility for peace. The trouble is, neither Hezbollah, Hamas, al Queda nor Iran's self-destructive government wants this. So we must proceed to destroy our enemies and then peace between ourselves and our neighbours may come about. I hope this little lecture on the mideast isn't too long for you but because you are insistently on this website, I thought a small bounty of education was due you.
15. Nationalist opium
Basil ,   Morgantown, USA   (11.14.09)
Of course, they are enthusiastic. They're part of the matrix. The youth has been brainwashed for so long and are victims of state propaganda and Hamas didn't help things by firing missiles. Israelis don't really question what the state does. They have moved more and more to the right.. Does a nation seeking to be a light amongst nations move more and more to the right? The compass is moving south. Who knows what the consequences will be. I want no part of such behavior.
16. All those that do not serve should be made
jason white ,   afula,israel   (11.14.09)
second class citizens. Let them sit in prison for three years for every year they did not serve, plus an extra year. No right to vote, sit in the knesset, work in government, have driver's, weapon or business licenses, attend institutes of higher learning, receive child allowances, be last in line for employment and not allowed to advance above the job of a worker. They should pay a defense tax for each member of the family. This should be for all religions here.
17. The strength of democracy.
Ron B. ,   Lod   (11.14.09)
If both political leaders and public opinion are convinced of the rightness and necessity of war, it is extremely difficult to withstand the wrath of a democratic country. The staying power of such countries does not depend on the damage they suffer in human lives and property. Their power lies in what defines their very existence–their belief in democratic values and their wish to protect them. If a democratic society believes in the rightness and necessity of its struggle, and if its leadership can provide a simple and clear answer to the question, “What are we fighting for?” the public will be willing to bear any burden required of them. At the most critical junctures of its history, the citizenry is not the weakest link in a democratic country, but its greatest resource. We will fight for our country because it is ours and we have no other as explained in 6 parts at : http://xrl.us/bi5c6
18. #15 Reality
Cynthia ,   USA   (11.14.09)
These young people are setting aside school, jobs, family to serve their country. It's a tradition of survival since '48 necessitated by real and present enemies on their borders. Israel is at the forefront of the war on terror which is why US military and law enforcement officials travel to Israel to learn how Israel handles this problem.
19. To #10 And may I wish you???
Kate ,   Israel   (11.14.09)
May I wish you:Bon Apetite too? Since you have offerred such a delicious meal,it is only right and proper to return the favour yes? Sarah B, would not descend to your low level ,but I decided to do it in my own way. You deserve the it.
