1. This is the best way
Meir ,   Beit Shemesh   (11.18.09)
It actually is better for these soldiers to tell us now at this stage, that they are unwilling to evacuate settlements, rather than have them go through all the courses, and then end up on evacuation day, and then refuse to do it. Thing is I think the army will end up with lefties, Beduin, Druze and Christians to do it, and maybe not all of them will be too keen on the idea either!!!
2. Vast majority reject army protests
JPS ,   Efrat   (11.18.09)
Those of us who serve or have family who serve in Hesder totally reject the idea that soldiers can violate discipline and have a civilian-style protest while in uniform. The place for protest is in civilian clothing, not the armed forces.
3. the unions statement seems spot on to me
Brian ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.18.09)
and yes the IDF should not be used against Israels citizens, this is correct and the root of the problem, this is a mission for police, if at all, I myself hold the protesters in high regard, and feel that the problem lies squarely with the government and not Yeshivas.
4. when you do not have a sore tooth don't rap your head
Gail ,   Israel   (11.18.09)
a famous Israeli saying.. it is just a pity the army did not take this into consideration when they put brother against brother What did they think would happen that all would just follow any order given (like in Germany during the 2nd world war) even if it goes against religion and morality. This has nothing to do with money or politics. Their should be consequences for a government who makes laws that half the population can not follow due to morality and goes against law biding tax paying citizens forcing them to do what is against their beliefs . It is not just the religious who feel this way. Most Jew's living in Israel would not feel comfortable removing mothers fathers and kids from places they have lived, homes they felt safe in and communities that they built (with the help of the same government) and I am sure that if the army continues to make the same mistake over and over then our sons will stop going(even if they loose their benefits and even if they have to sit in jail for a while. Jail you can get over but the guilt of hurting people will last for ever Doesn't the army realize that to protect a country and to win a war the solders need to be emotionally strong and what they are doing is bringing the solders moral down. We have lost democracy and if we carry on like this we will loose this country. Stupid Jews we are our worst enemy we can't even win a war with Lebanon lol If we do not stand together strong we are finished. I am so glad that my son is a Jobnik who the hell wants to sacrifice for a country like this we deserve all we are getting and I am not religious sad i should need to say so. Hesder heads if you fold under this blackmail then you should not be in a position influencing young students because the money is not as important as brother going against brother what would the country prefer that the boys not serve like the Charedim(they have a lot to say about that also) the army stands for the protection of all citizens not only left wing Israeli's and it does not make a difference where the citizens live A citizen has the right to build a home and keep it till they die and then pass it down to there kids and so on till the end of time no government has the right to give that land a way because of politics it only has a right to protect it and carry on protecting it for ever..that is the ABC of war and when you go to war (no mater if you win or not) to protect your country i.e. land you fight till death. It is very simple how the hell did we make it so complicated ,no other country gives land away I do not see the USA giving the land back to the Indians or waiting over 2 years while Mexico booms them to retaliate Mexico would not dare because they know that they would be finished if they tried. We are stupid and weak.
5. To # 3
Philip ,   Afula , Israel   (11.18.09)
The army does what its told to do by the government. The yeshivas have no say in the matter and same for the rabbis.Thats how democracy works. You dont like it ,thats why you are free to vote every four or so years.
6. The bottom line
Jacob Erickson ,   Holon, Israel   (11.18.09)
The bottom line is that when you're in the army your right to express your opinion is taken away. That is how the army works. If you are given an order, you do it. Of course the alternative to all that is you go to jail. So you do have a choice. Pick one, obedience or jail.
7. 3 - are the yeshivot willing to listen to the public?
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (11.18.09)
it seems that the general public is on the side of the government on this issue. sure, the yeshivot have a point, but it is debatable legally and not very persuasive to the public. they will have to do a better job presenting and arguing their case and, even then, must accept the will of the democratic state if/when their position is not accepted. demonstrate to your heart's content, but do not compromise the integrity of the armed forces.
8. They should be an open public discourse first.
Nethanel ,   Jerusalem   (11.18.09)
Settlers are not the enemy of th state and most soldiers did not recruite in order to become tools of political agendas, which have nothing to do with defense. There is a legal base for conscientious objection. The public has to define whether evacuation of Jews applies to this. In any case the Israeli society comes closer to a point to decide whether it has faith to the Torah, the Land of Israel and the Jewish people or it wants a democracy for everyone, goyim, Arabs, foreign workrs etc. Let's face it, this is the core for all discussions. And I know that I opt for the value system which is eternal...
9. IDF
Marilyn ,   USA   (11.18.09)
I would assume that these guys aren't protesting the military establishment, just one type of action. So see it is not that much.
10. Hesder: learn from the Hareidim.DON'T JOIN THIS CORRUPT ARMY
Bob   (11.18.09)
If religious Jews will get out of this immoral corrupt army and the left who are known draft-dodgers are not part of them already for years, there will be no one to expel Jews. Hesder yeshiva, get out of there immediately for your own good and for the good of your Jewish brothers!
11. If Bibi, Barak and the rest of the government
Israel   (11.18.09)
can't with their own hands remove the Jews from their homes, they should stop requesting that other Jews do this immoral ded for them.
12. Secular IDF is preparing for a very un-Jewish mission
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim,   (11.18.09)
B"H Zamir, if you force the issue, between you and Torah Jews will chose Torah.
13. So now NAZIS are excemp from crime
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (11.18.09)
Soldiers in the German Army were following their superiors's orders, and did the right thing by carrying them out down to the last detail and more. What kind of anti-semitic orders do these israeli generals exactly want israelis to follow??? Do they want to do away with the zionist minded wing of the army? Wasn't the defense of the state of Israel army's raison d'etre to begin with??? SOLDIERS SHOULD AND MUST APPLY THEIR MORALS AND ETHICS THEY ARE NO ONE'S SLAVES HOPE RABBIS SPEAK UP FOR MORE DISSOBEDIENCE FOR MORE TORAH AND MORE ERETS ISRAEL
14. Playing hardball with the biggest source of combat soldiers?
Ron   (11.18.09)
And the most motivated to serve and protect the nation of Israel and the land of Israel? Pretty stupid. We'll end up with an army that has no motivation and far fewer fitting candidates for combat positions.
15. Take action against all the leftists both
jason white ,   afula,israel   (11.18.09)
foreign and domestic. Go after all the anti Zionist n.g.o.s and even investigate a certain "peace center". Take action against talking with our enemies from eurabia and the b.o. administration as well as the p.a.
16. This Avi Zamir is the one with us on the
Benjamin   (11.18.09)
MBA from Ben Gurion University
17. # 15 ......mentally alert today.
Dr Watson ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.18.09)
Really at your best today Jason White, haisplitting logic and so eloquently expressed .Now climb back under some rock and have a logic reload.
18. Thought police in action
Abba ,   Modi'in, Israel   (11.18.09)
What's lost in these discussions and articles is that these soldiers are being punished for saying what they think, not for insubordination. Not a single one of them has disobeyed an order.
19. #12 Ariel ben Yochanan in occupied Palestine
Avi ,   Israel   (11.18.09)
Dont worry pal we will be coming to remove you from occupied Palestine sooner than you think. Enjoy the bounty of your crimes as it wont last long. Land thief
20. Forbid secular draft dodgers from protesting also
Adam Eliyahu   (11.18.09)
The army should not be used for dismantling settlements. And an Israeli soldier is REQUIRED to refuse illegal orders. Just because a court orders something to be done does not mean it is legal. Without a constitution, the Israel court can (and does) play free and easy with the law when a political agenda is present. And I feel that a young man or woman who is willing to make the sacrifice and serve in the army should be heard, much more so than some left wing brainwashed fanatic who avoided army service so now has plenty of free time on his hands to wave a banner. Also, a soldier was arrested for protesting in uniform. Why? He was on his way to his base, in uniform, when his wife called and said the army had showed up unanounced to knock down their house. He went home and was arrested. SOunds absurd but get used to it. The army is ordering young men to beat up their own families and friends and to knock down the houses they were raised in. They are idiots if they expect it to be a pretty sight.
21. No disobedience yet
אליהו ,   ירושלים   (11.20.09)
The soldiers have put up a sign saying they won't remove Jewish people from their homeland. There was no disobedience. What if some of the German soldiers had done the same? Some probably did and some were murdered along with the others. Joining the military does not remove one's conscience. Some would argue that some who join are of the best conscience. The root of this problem again appears to be the marriage of yeshivas that are funded by the government. The government funds the yeshiva and therefore owns at least a portion of their produce. But which portion? Compare this to the government funding those that won't work. The government owns part of their produce i.e. their votes. Cut the funding for the Hesder and see if the conscience remains steadfast. If it remains steadfast the government will change. Only ideas in the end will win out against guns.
22. But don't protest in uniform or near
אליהו ,   ירושלים   (11.20.09)
any base. Try to be discharged honorably as soon as possible. If you are a good soldier they will call you back for the real fighting.
23.  to #13
meir ,   brooklyn-east new yo   (11.25.09)
you're right on. the question is whether a soldier must obey a morally unjust order. the answer was given in the nurenberg trials, clearly no.! gush katif was a very destructive process for those in the army who were involved. why destroy the moral of the israeli army by forcing soldiers to deport jews from their homes? import goyim from germany or the ukraine.they'll do it gladly,
