1. maintaining status quo = 'right-wing & 'far-right'??
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (11.29.09)
wow, such bias in our faces from the first sentences. but we've come to expect opinion in news reports.
2. What FAR RIGHT - CENTER you mean
Mike ,   Is   (11.29.09)
Well. well if a a majority of Swiss for the limitation of expansionist Islam, then it's MAINSTREAM and NOT FAR RIGHT, Obviously the writer is a Left Extremist
3. A day of celebration throughout Europe!
Johnny ,   Stockholm Sweden   (11.29.09)
What a glorious day for the Swiss people, and for the whole of Europe! A truly great moment!
4. The opening shot of the new Europes Civil War
The Dude   (11.29.09)
It's quite ironic that the first country to push these measures is one that isn't in the EU, but completely enveloped by it. But this is indeed the first shot of the European civil war. While I cannot attest whether this war will be fought primarily through new laws (such as this one) or through unconventional means (like the Spanish train bombings), but the fact is that only a fool would not admit that Europe now with this has set itself up for a war. This will be a war about values. And the eventual realization that even 'non-confrontational' societies must sometimes be willing to use force (in multi-fold ways) to safe guard there way of life. I only hope that this shift will see European citizens of all states reclaiming there rights from the monstrous EU bureaucracy and clearly put it back into it's place and finally state clearly that the point of the EU is for economic reasons, not to impose the social will of a few elites sitting in Brussels. It's time for Europe to stand up for it's values and to realize that siding against Israel will not assuage the growing threat.
5. Let Them Build Churches in Mecca & Medina
Abdel Karim Salim ,   Jerusalem - ISRAEL   (11.29.09)
I wish the anti-minaret bill a speedy & overwhelming passage. If the Swiss government worries about infuriating wealthy arab investors then European Union countries & other European,North American, & Oceanian countries should rightfully demand that christian missionaries be allowed to build churches anywhere & everywhere in Saudi Arabia especially in the two cities of Mecca & Medina where non moslems are not allowed to be.There should be reciprocity in international relations. If Islam bans non moslems from going to Mecca & Medina then secular laws of European Union & America should have the full right ,out of independence & sovereignty,to ban the building of mosques in their countries. I myself am already fed up with moslem call for prayers five times a day, especially the early-morning call that is voiced through a loudspeaker which disturbs me by waking me up from my deep sleep & equally makes me hurl filthy verbal abuse at Islam & moslems . Better believe it ... !
6. far right initiative? not hardly
Yael ,   Tel Aviv   (11.29.09)
A group of politicians from the country's biggest party (which is NOT in any way. shape or form a far-right party but rather a center-right party) were the initiators of this referendum at least according to this article. So how does the article start off with the claims of it being a far-right call?
7. The Posters Tell Everything - No Doubt about how they feel
Andrew ,   Miami,FL   (11.29.09)

11. what a shame the Israeli people dont get referendums
zionist forever   (11.29.09)
Its just a shame that in Israel our croooked politicians believe that referendum is a dirty word. Then we could actually make progress DO WE WANT TO FREEZE SETTLEMENTS - YES / NO DO WE WANT TO DIVIDE JERUSALEM - YES / NO It would give us alot more leverage over America and put power in the hands of the Israeli people not a coalition thats been put together by buying off other parties. America says it embraces democracy so if Israelis had voted in a referendum against Obamas plans he would either have to accept thats how it goes and no amount of pressure on Bibi will change that. His other option would be to say I do not accept any democratically made decisions if they conflict with my policy. As for the Swiss its good they decided to stick with their own christian culture and isn't going to become the next European islamisized state.
12. Freedom of religion #10
Johnny ,   Stockholm Sweden   (11.29.09)
Qur'an:9:5 "Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war." This sort of religion is not free to practice in Europe.
13. good finally someone sees the light,
ghostq   (11.29.09)
soon more laws, cause it's not racism the other religion can practic theirs, only Muslims who don't respect europeen country normas or tradition will be out.
14. Through them out from Europe
Phoenix ,   Israel   (11.29.09)
Europe it is for europeans and people that want to respect the european way of life. This animals think they can go anywhere and have it their own way. Throught them back to their countries, where they lived in crap holes without water or any comodity of modern world. Through them out of Europe.
15. why is it right wing to oppose the fascist political
rachel ,   usa   (11.29.09)
islam .....the muslims love to complain about the democratic countries but where in the arab world do you see acceptance of other religions ...If they don't like it there are plenty of muslim countries they can move to ......
16. Maybe the Swiss took note of Erdogan's comments
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (11.29.09)
Turkey's PM Erdogan said recently, "The minarets are our bayonets. The domes are our helmets, the mosques our barracks and the believers our army." This is not a question of "freedom of religion", rather one of culture and values. Under Islam a simple prayer room suffices; minarets are a symbol of Muslim presence, the muezzin's call - especially when amplified - an arrogant display of preeminence. I recall the first time I saw a woman in Washington in a niqab - the "full ninja" - just a few blocks from the Capitol. It's not just that, in hiding who's behind the mask, our security is compromised. It's a blatant rejection of US values. While many in Europe have forgotten who they are, others have not. It's culture and values *are* under threat from a growing and increasingly assertive Islam. That's what's at stake here.
17. Europe made adequate space for them by murdering Jews in 40s
Alan ,   SA   (11.29.09)
Wait Europe .you havnt seen anything yet. You will remember the good old days when you used to murder us Jews. The problems are just starting for you all.;From Noth Cape Norway to Lampadusa and Sicily
18. Islamophobic as well as anti-Semitic
Me   (11.29.09)
The same Switzerland that will have little to do with the Jews of Israel and which cooperates with Iran, facilitating Iran's drive to gain nuclear weapons despite the (feeble) efforts of the international community, has an overwhelmingly Islamophobic majority. I'm shocked. Really. No, I'm not.
19. let them buy swiss alarm clocks
mahmoud ,   usa   (11.29.09)
the purpose of a minarat is to remind the muslims its time to pray,to me it is a noise pollution.muslims needs to learn and adapt to modern days technologies, back then they used 4 legged drive camels, today we use 4 wheel drive.major progress, muslims like to spite the host countries,in america we tell them love it or leave it.
20. Great !
Blonde Mermaid ,   Denmark   (11.29.09)
A great news in the common fight for the liberation of Europe !
21. Switzerland
Israel Forever ,   Israel   (11.29.09)
The rest of Europe should take this as an example & follow this superb news !!
22. About friggin time.... Times for new crusades...
William ,   USA   (11.29.09)
Everyone is trying to be politically correct State side and in Europe... It took one President, Sarkozy that is, to say that is enough BS... No burkhas, no veil... The muslim populations of most muslim countries "evicted" all their Jewish citizens and a majority of their Christian cutizens, then persecuted the remaining ones and still are going at it in Lebanon, Iran, Egypt and Iraq, so it is about time the western countries dec;are another set of crusades and nuke these criminals once and for all...
23. banning synagogues will be next?? !!
Ely Greenhut ,   Tzfat Israel   (11.29.09)
24. freedom of religion ?
xray64 ,   Zurich, Switzerland   (11.29.09)
Freedom of religion is not affected by that vote. Some religious practices might and are forbidden anyway in Switzerland.
25. Freedom of religion
xray64 ,   Zurich, Switzerland   (11.29.09)
I couldn't agree more. If I published those phrases in Switzerland replacing disbelievers with "Jews" I would rightly be punished by laws for disseminating hatred. Can any rational person tell me how I am supposed to accept that religion, being an atheist ? I won't.
26. #11 Zionist forever
David ,   USA, exile   (11.29.09)
The people of Israel cannot expect their government to give the people this power. It would weaken their individual powers. If you want it you must take it. The government is put in place by the people. You get what you deserve and allow. If the majority of the people take to the streets and demand their rights the government will have no choice. Force them to comply with the will of the people or replace them. Oh Yes, one other thing. T'shuvah will help.
27. Uprising in E U R O B I A
Ginette Golden ,   Toronto, Canada   (11.29.09)
For months I was seeing the writing on the wall and it is now happening all over Europe. For all these anti-Semite, anti-Israel countries, this is a great lesson for them to learn. The fans love it!
28. at Mohammad's time, no mosque had minaret
observer   (11.29.09)
Only 100 years after Mohammad's death, mosques started to acquire minarets. Nothing like building code for mosques exists in Islam. It's important to note that for such an imitative to pass, it requires a double majority, meaning that the majority of "cantons" and the majority of the voting population have to accept it. This way of functioning is usually more kind to conservative initiatives, since the smaller cantons are mostly populated by rural citizens, who have less personal experience with such issues, having generally less contact with the Swiss Muslim population.
29. already, there are 4 minarets for 200 mosques in Switzerland
observer   (11.29.09)
30. Ely - Banning of Jews already exists!
Israeli ,   Haifa   (11.29.09)
Are you oblivious to reality? Look at Swiss State agencies such as the ICRC where the symbol of Judaism, the Magen David, is banned! The Swiss are not banning mosques...they are banning the minarets that blare into the night and early morning. Look to the US..where such bans already exist.
