1. Right. He cannot serve in the antiTorah corrupt Court system
Shalom   (12.08.09)
Israel's anti-Torah, anti-Jewish, immoral, corrupt, Sodomite court should only allow judges like Beinisch and Aron Barak.
2. #1 Shalom talking of corruption
Avi ,   Israel   (12.08.09)
Talking of corruption maybe he could join Shas where he would be amongst fellow inmates in face 7 Shas MKs already jailed maybe this is the standards of the Torah you are so keen to promote?
3. Our current law is based on Torah law
rebecca ,   Modiin   (12.08.09)
As is the law in every "civilised" country. This is not Sharia law we are talking about. And even the Rabbim are not likely to bring the more out-of-date type, stringent laws back into play. Jewish law, as a law system, is pretty brilliant, which is why our supreem court might not want it around.
4. replace the current system of government?
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (12.08.09)
sounds like what the islamists want to do. rather undemocratic and anti-israel.
5. religious law
alexi   (12.08.09)
For 3 long years, olmert backed by elder and the blind haaretz barnea and marcus made outrageous statements that isreal is finished, we feel for the nakba, convergence and the courts did nothing. Winograd said he was incompetent and livni ramon and the courts kept him in power as he twisted israel in the wind. Now the courts get it back by an implied statement by neeman of religious law. Ahh, isn't it great!Haaretz is suffering with his statement. Suffer! You hurt israel, nnow its time for you to hurt. All the haredi should get the hell into t he army. Torah is no exemption. But media, suffer as you and dankner and the others foisted pain onto israel.
6. 10 years back?
Moshe Lyons ,   Kochav Yaakov   (12.08.09)
Senior officials in the legal system said, "A justice minister in the Israeli government, which is a democratic government, cannot make such statements and it cannot be left to blow over. This is a serious statement that takes us 10 years back." ....ahhhh, my dear senior legal official, I think this takes us about 2000 years back, your just off by 1990 years..no biggy, you had better get back to whatever Senior Legal System officials do......
7. LEGALISTS CHOOSE IGNORANCE!!
al mann ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.08.09)
Those professional lawmakers or interpreters should learn the history and philosophy of the laws given on Mount Sinai. Ignorance and lack of pedagogic understanding further serve them to separate law from human validity to Divine validity. The division of the people serves the legalists as a means of continuing the constant derision of parts of society by others. Maybe the idea is no unity, Constant differences. When will we sit together as a united entity, a united people?
8. Don't want to live by Torah: FINE, leave or stay out
LV ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.08.09)
because Israel (the people and the state) was created by HaShem to be a godly state (yes, a theocracy), not a democracy.
9. torah law or Charia
Itamar ,   Ramat gan   (12.08.09)
If this will happen god forbid, it means the end of Israel, Israel was created by the seculars, and defended by them, since the upcome of the Orthodox after 1967, Israel is getting weaker from year to year, I am an orthodox, and my son is not drafted
10. ne'eman
sad ,   israel   (12.08.09)
this mans with his ideas is DANGEROUS.
11. Here's the clarification, Neeman doesn't want Torah law only
Brian Cohen ,   Judean People's Frnt   (12.08.09)
Justice Ministry Statement (Communicated by the Justice Ministry Spokesman) Following is a statement from Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman's Bureau: "In the wake of reports on IDF Radio regarding his remarks at a rabbinical conference last night, Justice Minister Prof. Yaakov Neeman wishes to clarify that these remarks were not a call for Jewish religious law to replace the laws of the State of Israel, either directly or indirectly. Minister Neeman spoke in broad and general terms about restoring the stature of Jewish law and about the importance of Jewish law to the life of the country."
12. Israel ans democracy.
philip ,   afula, Israel   (12.08.09)
Whats all the fuss ,Israel is not a real domocracy in any event, at least not in the western sense. 60 years on and still no separation of religion from state.viz the current buisness of the yeshivot hesder.Time to grow up and put things in order.
13. #8 LV not for you to decide
Avi ,   Israel   (12.08.09)
in case you have forgotten Israel is a democratic state infact the last democracy in the middle east. Israel was formed as a democratic state and is not a state defied by jewish law. In fact this state was built and defended by secualrs and religious alike, Religion is at the end of the day a belief a faith. Who knows in such a state as you suggest the ultra orthodox would deport you for not being religious enough according to their rules or you would be accused at looking at another man and stoned in the village square? You can not impose religious law on non belivers, so maybe its you who should leave i would suggest Tehran or Afghanistan .
14. I KNOW WHOM JEHOVAH WOULD FIRE !!!.
Arn-Orao. ,   Sweden-Srbia.   (12.08.09)
Legalists: Ne'eman cannot stay in post Following comments that Torah law should be restored in Israel, sources from legal system tell Ynet, 'If he is of this opinion, he cannot serve as minister in State of Israel' ALL JURIDICAL SYSTEMS IN THE WESTERN WORLD IS BASED ON THE TORAH. Former MK Professor Amnon Rubinstein told Ynet, "The justice minister's bid to turn Israel into a halachic state is a revolution that will rob Israel of its character as a Jewish democratic state, and will nullify the Knesset's position as a force that represents the people's sovereignty and will call for the replacement of judges with religious judges." IT WOULD TURN ISRAEL TO A MESSIANIC STATE, WITH THE MESSIA AS HIGHEST RULER. EXACTLY WHAT JEHOVAH HAS INTENDED FOR ISRAEL. Dr. Aviad Hacohen, Dean of the Sha'arei Mishpat Academic College and specialist on Jewish Law, said, "These comments should be praised. The vision of Israel's prophets is a central part of the Proclamation of Independence, the values of liberty, the justice, integrity and peace in Jewish law and the Torah of Israel and expresses Israel's existence as a Jewish state. FREEDOM TO EACH INDIVIDUAL, IS GUARANTIED OF JEHOVAH ACCORDING TO THE FIRST COMANDMENT - - TO LOVE JEHOVAH WITH ONES WHOLE CAPACITY - !!!. IT IS AN INDIVIDUAL COMANDMENT, NOT A COLLECTIVE ONE, AND GIVES EACH INDIVIDUAL, INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM BEFORE EVERY OTHER INDIVIDUAL, AS TO ONES INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY. ONE CAN NOT LOVE JEHOVAH, WITH ANY BODY ELSES CAPACITY, ONLY WITH ONE OWNS. ALL RESISTENCE AGAINST THIS, WILL BE CRUSHED BY JEHOVAH, ACCORDING TO HIS WORD. Malachi 4 1 For, behold, the day cometh, it burneth as a furnace; and all the proud, and all that work wickedness, shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith Jehovah of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But unto you that fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings; and ye shall go forth, and gambol as calves of the stall. 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I make, saith Jehovah of hosts. 4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, even statutes and ordinances. 5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of Jehovah come. 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers; lest I come and smite the land with a curse. THE LAND IS ISRAEL !!!. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrCal6kE-r4 Arn-Orao. Aviad Glickman Published: 12.08.09, 12:45 / Israel News The legal system is having a hard time swallowing the justice minister's comments that Torah law should be restored in Israel, and sources in the establishment are now saying: Minister Yaakov Ne'eman cannot remain in his role. "The prime minister must call him to order and fire him at once. There is no place for such comments by the justice minister in Israel," top sources from the legal system told Ynet on Tuesday.
15. Regarding #11
Jonathan ,   Tel Aviv   (12.08.09)
Clarification aside, the beauty of this country, is its' ability to represent Judiasm in all its' forms. The democratic process, while flawed, provides the best concensus for Orthodoxy to secularism. Judiasm has always taught us to be thinkers, to innovate and interpret. The Torah is wonderful, and has its' place. The judicial system is not the correct place, the Synagogue is.
16. Legalists
Bruria   (12.08.09)
Interesting, are they afraid they may have to refrain from corruption, dishonesty, etc.? I doubt was a call to replace our laws, sounded more like a call for our corrupt politicians to start acting like honest representatives of the people. I know who I would get rid of...
17. Out now, asap
Sagi   (12.08.09)
Should be forced to resign.
18. Ne'eman
MC   (12.08.09)
Ne'eman is quite right! Israel's idea of democracy needs an overhall When are the people going to stop hating each other and learn to work together for the sake of unity? With all the in-fighting, how can we ever expect peace with our neighbours. If Israel wants to survive it had better put it's house in order. Nothing to do with external enemies!
19. Democratic debate
Wade ,   NYC USA   (12.08.09)
Why shouldn't the influence of Torah be freely debated just like any other suggested evolution of Israeli law? It is hypocritical to espouse democracy and then try to silence one point of view- especially when that opinion advocates a return to the original Jewish law, the Torah.
