Just like Iran? You mean you prefer, Turkish law, British law and Roman law, but Jewish law is bad?
2. It's time.........

4. And besides things are not black or white.
Keren ,   IL-BR   (12.08.09)
At the same time that she says "Jewish law is a fascinating cultural creation.." ,she closes the door by saying "applying it as the State’s law would turn us into the Jewish version of Iran" I undertand that she "recognizes" Jewish law as something almost fancy(because she clearly doesn't know anything about it)to be used as a superficial acessory, while she does not mention about the roots of what should be the law of Israel that she so fiercely advocates. What exactly is she advocating as correct? What is " modern worldview"? What is a "nation in its contemporary meaning."? Even, what is Zionism? What does she mean by these things?
5. Ugly, Angry Piece
Melissa Asher, Esq. ,   Boston, MA   (12.08.09)
Dr. Kamir's opinion is written in a disrespectful and hateful manner. Regardless of whether one agrees with Yaacov Neeman or not, those representing the law should write and speak civilly. Israeli society is notorious for its abject lack of basic courtesy. Lawyers and judges should be at the forefront of a national movement towards more respectful behavior. If lawyers write the way Dr. Kamir writes, what can one expect of bus drivers, grocers or other laypersons? Dr. Kamir’s behavior here is not becoming of an attorney.
6. why voluntary religious courts are wrong
Avram moshe   (12.08.09)
OK, this article is a bit over the top in its ethical critique of halachic Judais... BUT Besides the fears of giving more political power to (male) Rabbis, even a voluntary system would be destructive to many. Once an alternative court system is introduced the Rabbis will undoubtably issue a halachic ruling that Jews must turn to the religious courts or be ostracized withing the so called Torah community. Few would risk such exile and in particular women and children would suffer. Neeman's phony compromises corrupted attempts at a compassionate approach to conversions for new olim and he is now the stalking horse of those who would dismember zionism in favor of an Orthodox Jewish state. For the zake of Zion he must go!
7. Applying Torah Law.
Samir S. Halabi ,   Geneve, Suisse.   (12.08.09)
The Justice Minister of Israel has the right to express his views, Torah Law can only be fully implemented and adhered to if that is the will of the overall majority of the people of Israel. However Orit Kamir has no justification whatsoever in stating that Yaakov Ne'eman should leave israel and return to whichever land he originated from, she is no better than goyim ranting and raving at jews to 'get out of our country you jews don't belong here' this is inverted anti-semitism at it's worst.
8. Ironic
michael   (12.09.09)
The author is a co-director for Human Dignity yet his ignorance and hatred for his himself and his people doesn't not promote any diginity To Mr. Neeman nor the educated religios public in Israel. It is sad and ironic that the author is more about demonizing his fellow citizens than dignifying his fellow constituents. Demonizing others out of pure ignorance is not a democratic trait and I sure hope it is not a zionist value.
9. He is so right.
Israeli 2   (12.09.09)
I prefer people like Ne'eman over Orit Kamir.
10. God save us! Anything but this!
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (12.09.09)
Oh no! Restoration of Torah laws in the land of Israel. God save us! Please save us from our eternal stupidity.
11. Why pulish this rubbish?
Franklin ,   greenbelt, md   (12.09.09)
While everyone certainly has a right to his or her opinions, this is going way too far. The Jewish people have been lead by the morals and teachings of the Bible for thousands of years. Being Jewish means that ones soul was at Mount Sinai when the bible was given to the Jewish people by the Lord- not eating lox and preaching "tikun olam". The German were the most cultured, well mannered, and respectful people in the world before WWII. That did not help your grandparents who are probably turning over in their graves over this article.
12. Religion
Sagi   (12.09.09)
is the bane of humanity.
13. Halakhic equality
Elli ,   Modiin, Israel   (12.09.09)
If I had a dollar for every idiot with a Ph.D., I'd be a rich man. Neeman was talking about civil law, not ritual law or criminal law. Jewish civil law is completely equitable, and is not a threat to Israeli democracy, liberalism, or Zionism in any way. It's a form - the Jewish form - of adjudicating disputes between litigants. People need to look at context before getting their britches in a twist.
14. Ms Kamir you need Jewish Law 101
Rosie   (12.09.09)
It is sad that you are writing this article totally ignorent of jewish law. According to your logis the Knesset can make a law that anyone with blue eye should be killed. Jewish law has been the basis of civilizations. My G-d it pains me to read such a trash from an Israeli lawyer. Wake up!!!!!!!
15. Minister Neeman, YOU ROCK!!!
Debbie ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.09.09)
16. Is this story a joke?
