Dr. Kamir's opinion is written in a disrespectful and hateful manner. Regardless of whether one agrees with Yaacov Neeman or not, those representing the law should write and speak civilly. Israeli society is notorious for its abject lack of basic courtesy. Lawyers and judges should be at the forefront of a national movement towards more respectful behavior. If lawyers write the way Dr. Kamir writes, what can one expect of bus drivers, grocers or other laypersons? Dr. Kamir’s behavior here is not becoming of an attorney.

OK, this article is a bit over the top in its ethical critique of halachic Judais... BUT Besides the fears of giving more political power to (male) Rabbis, even a voluntary system would be destructive to many. Once an alternative court system is introduced the Rabbis will undoubtably issue a halachic ruling that Jews must turn to the religious courts or be ostracized withing the so called Torah community. While everyone certainly has a right to his or her opinions, this is going way too far. The Jewish people have been lead by the morals and teachings of the Bible for thousands of years. Being Jewish means that ones soul was at Mount Sinai when the bible was given to the Jewish people by the Lord- not eating lox and preaching "tikun olam". If I had a dollar for every idiot with a Ph.D., I'd be a rich man. Neeman was talking about civil law, not ritual law or criminal law. Jewish civil law is completely equitable, and is not a threat to Israeli democracy, liberalism, or Zionism in any way. It's a form - the Jewish form - of adjudicating disputes between litigants.
