2. A sick joke
Daniel Breslauer ,   Jerusalem   (12.09.09)
My neighborhood rabbi, who is a dayan on the Badatz of the Edah HaChareidis ("Edah Haredit"), told me they are a Purim joke. They claim to have the support of numerous big rabbis (Rav Moshe Halberstam ZT"L), Rav Eliashiv, Rav Ovadia Yosef) - which is a plain LIE, as I have personally verified (though I knew it was a lie without verification as well). These guys involve the worst freaks and weirdest idiots walking around the country with a kippah on their heads. The Chareidi (Haredi) world considers these weirdos to be exactly that, weirdos, irrelevant and of no importance whatsoever. Most chareidim have never heard of these clowns. The biggest rabbis there are have all publicly stated their support for the prisoner swap to release Gilad.

I hope you are right. Otherwise we are all doomed forever!

Marvin ,   Rehovot   (12.09.09)
Do any of these clowns have a following besides Steinzaltz? Are they recognized leaders or self proclamed Rabbis like Elior Chen? Anyone can claim the support of a dead man (Rav Halberstam)
5. They are correct but
Avi ,   Canada   (12.09.09)
I would like to point out first the weakness of the Israeli government. Do they, in fact, take the stance of not negotiating with terrorists? The wisdom of the Sanhedrin, poorly communicated be it as it may, is that if an evil person ( or entity here - Hamas) commits an unlawful act (kidnapping) and demands payment in whatever kind (murderous terrorists to be set free ) to reestablish equilibrium (by returning the kidnapped person,) to acquiesce would be foolish and wrong. Doing so would create the motivation for the evil person to commit the unlawful act again, while supplying no impediment to such an act, or cause for change in the future. On the other hand, what the Sanhedrin suggests (albeit unrealistically, see further on) is that prisoners are executed until the release of Shalit. In a world where the Sanhedrin was in charge of the state or even where religious Jews accepted the authority of the (self-formed) Sanhedrin, maybe this response could be considered acceptable. The only realistic thing the government could do if they desired to follow the fundamental wisdom of the Talmud brought down by the Sanhedrin (although in an unrealistic application for today) would be to 1) maintain integrity as a political force by keeping their word and therefore refuse to negotiate with terrorists. (This would also sever any percieved messages by the public of Hamas being a legitimate entity to trade with. It would also remove an integral reward for such unlawful acts done by the evil entity) 2) To introduce (in response to this specific incident, albeit shown indirectly) capital punishment for terrorists proven to have taken part in actions leading to the deaths of civilians. If Israel wants to live as a Jewish state it means that this entity must - and this is a must - find a way of integrating the worldly strength of its zionist predecessors together with the wisdom of the soul of its people.
6. Thank you, Avi,
Robert Haymond ,   Ashdod, Israel   (12.09.09)
for clarifications and comments. It is humiliating that we negotiate with terrorists on the fate of Gilad Shalit while we allow Hamas leaders to go about freely and to speak openly and while we treat Arab murderers in our prisons with such humanity. The principles which this new Sanhedrin calls for is beginning to make much sense.
7. YES, Excllent, where do you want me to sign?
Eyal ,   USA   (12.09.09)
This will be the biggest and the most good news I heard in a decade. I don't think my friend Noor will like this article nor the goofy Arabs Muslims on this board. I don't think any of this will go through, but if it does, it will be the best thing Israel can do. Do not trade Schalit for hundreds of terrorists, even though I think they will anyways.
8. To the political geniuses at YNET
m   (12.09.09)
Sanhedrin is afiliated only to the Torah, not right, nor left. You sound pretty stupid in your assumption. On the other hand, you have already surrendered to the arabs, when a Jewish bride is arested by Israeli police for moving her lips on Temple Mount because an arab said so, and threatened to prison and loss of her wedding.
9. Whatever the nature of the group, their policy is correct

Aryeh ,   NY/USA   (12.09.09)
Israel has enough it can do to pressure Hamas without killing anyone. I liked the idea of locking Masgid al Aksa, not letting anyone enter it until Gilad is free and back on Israeli soil. If it is locked and any Moslem objects, tell him to speak to Hamas. Brilliant. Another possibility would be to take away the broad privilages these prisoners have. Pressure, yes. Murder, no.
11. #2 Unfair
nr ,   los angeles, usa   (12.09.09)
It's unfair of you to go on the word of your neighbor about how the rest of us feel regarding the Sanhedrian. Okay, maybe we're ALL not ready for this, but what they say does make a lot more sense then the present government's stance. Don't write them off because they're religious and you're not. The Torah speaks to all of us and what they say is definitely based on the Torah. The Jewish people should not, and historically, did not put up with Hamas. They are not a new or unique invention - we have dealt with this kind of evil before. And it is our job to deal with it, not make the world happy about who we are.
12. Joke?
Dov Meir ,   Jerusalem   (12.09.09)
THe claims about supporting is about the SMICHAH not about Sanhedrin, The Sanhedrin has witnesses about these facts. Of sure the Eda Chaerdith does not like the Sabhedrin. If there is Sanhedrin for what sake the BADATZ is needed?!
13. Sanhedrin authority
Dov Meir ,   Jerusalem   (12.09.09)
Please learn RAMBA"m HILCHOTH SANHEDRIN. Your basic knoweledge about this institue is not valid.
14. from high moral ground
observer   (12.09.09)
in Judaism, there is only one or two verses to recite in time of illness, but there are hundred verses to recite on revenge.
15. This is common sense - something current leaders don't have.
Michael Berg ,   Petach Tikva   (12.10.09)
16. You'd think "observer" was a scholar
Robert Haymond ,   Ashdod, Israel   (12.10.09)
the way he goes on about Torah but, in fact, he's a non-Jew, doesn't read Hebrew and he knows nothing. He's blabbed the same line before. The guy's ignorant but has a big mouth. The two go naturally hand in hand!
17. But, the question is... is execution murder?
ChiDiamond   (12.10.09)
We tend to confuse the Hangman with the Hanged.... a faulty character defect of the West in general and often times Jews as well. If you kill your cab driver, its murder. If you execute terrorists who have murdered Israelis, is that murder? Does a State, ANY state, not have the right to protect the common good and security of its people by punishing OR eliminating a mortal threat as it sees it? Sure it can be abused, like dictatorships do all the time. But, friends, it can be also abused the other way.... a State can slide into passivity and do nothing while its citizens are slaughtered. The Sanhedrin is not off base here.
18. to #14 did you read them?
ghostq   (12.10.09)
the revenge in judaism is by the hands of god and not by a man, gees you don't know much about this thing.
19. to #16 he isn't jewish or chritian

23. Sanhedrin are not totaly wrong
Dani ,   Amsterdam NL   (12.10.09)
We do not have to release terrorist with bloody hand. Alternative go and kidnap as many Hamas Pals representative we can after that the ball turn in the Hamas field. No mercy for terrorists as they have no mercy for us. No concession to them until they do not recognize Israel and please just let them forget Jerusalem and make it clear
24. #2 is himself a charedi
eddie ,   london UK   (12.10.09)
Hence he is totally subjective. Perhaps his hareid world are sick freaks? Only Haredim think they are the bees knees, and that is usually limited to each sub-group, while they are at perpetual war with each other haredi sub-group.
25. FEAR!!! FEAR!!! FEAR!!!!
al mann ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.10.09)
The ignorant, political, manipulative leadership has only demonstrated that denial of past history (even Chanukah) is the best way fo confront and deal with our modern problems. The leadership justifies its existence in many ways to satisfy the modern, non-believer, socialistic existence. The Israelites are stuck in a mire of blindness, never having internalized its history and the justification for its survival and existence. Anxiety and fear rule our lives and the leadership makes use of those dynamics. It's fear ev en with big guns and jets. Should aliyah be based upon fear and anxiety of what can happen here because of anxiety and fear. Does ynet report these feelings? Never.
26. What can I say?

Since Hamas already decided to kill Shalit anyway and hand back only his body.
