1. Rabbi big winner
j. Bergman ,   Brooklyn NY   (12.15.09)
Your comments and opinion are so full of hate that disqualifies you as a serious writer. I can not imagine more hateful essay only the Elders of Zion was more virulent.
2. Most Hesder Yeshivot students disagree
Norman   (12.15.09)
We are not in the army to kick out our own relatives from their home. We certainly are for Yishuv Haaretz. Hanoch how do you know what we think of Rabbi Melamed, he happens to be someone many look up to. Stop with your lies and nonesense
3. Hanoch Dumn is half a nobody
Ilan ,   Ariel   (12.15.09)
please Hanoch don't embarrass yourself further. You may not agree with Rabbi Melamed, but how someone with less than a hundredth of his achievements calls him 'insignificant' the only person you insult is yourself.
4. who is this idiot Daum?
eddie ,   london UK   (12.15.09)
If it had been some leftie professor in tel aviv or Haifa, he woudl be cheered by the idiot left writers liek Gideon Levy et al. Perhaps this insignificant journalist wishes to get more prestige inthe left wing community, but cannot do so by his writing skills, and does not wish to move to ramallah liek haaretz journalists, so his next best thing is to attack a conscientious objector rabbi. Btw, Melamed is quite well known in the yeshiva circles. He is a significant rabbi, so the libel published in Ynet is totally anti-Jewish. Once upon a time, the British were preventing Jewish settlement in Israel. Now is is the likes of Barak and Bibi. So it is kind of ironic that people such as Barak and Livni (who is also anti-settlement) are accused of war crimes in the UK!
5. This is slander
Adir Dishy ,   Toronto, Canada   (12.15.09)
I don't know where Hanoch Daum got his information from, but he should be arrested for slander. Being a graduate of a the Maale Adumim Hesder yeshiva, I can witness to the fact that Rabbi Melameds Yeshiva is considered a very prestigious one, his books are considered a perfectly viable source of Halacha (myslef being an owner of the set) and his column is one of the more intriguing viewpoints of modern day issues regarding Judaism in general and specifically Halacha. This article does nothing but badmouth one of the leading Rabbi's of the Yesha Council. Regardless if one agrees of disagrees with his policies, it is not OK to concoct baseless lies about a human being, and specifically a leader of the Jewish community. Mr. Daum should be taken to trial for slander, because that is all that this article is.
6. The Rules Are Simple
Tuvia ,   USA   (12.16.09)
Melamed can have his own religious and political views and he can state them publicly. Soldiers can have their own religious and political views as well. However, soldiers may not refuse to follow orders and Melamed may not incite soldiers to refuse to follow orders. Soldiers must follow legal orders or they must resign from the service. During wartime if a soldier refuses to follow orders his commanders may shoot him. There are no ifs ands or buts about this. Melamed may incite soldiers to refuse to follow orders only if he withdraws from his agreement with the military first. Since Melamed has acted dishonorably Mr. Barak has removed the Rabbi from his agreement with the military. Individual soldiers will have to make up their own minds about what to do but they must act honorably. Either they honor their agreement with the military or they resign. Refusing to follow legal orders is not an option. Any soldier refusing to follow orders during wartime is liable to be shot. Any soldier refusing to follow orders during peacetime will be court-martialled.
7. lies
Arie   (12.16.09)
You are a liar, Daum. Rav Melamed is a great and respected Rabbi whose books are doing very well. His column in Be'sheva is according to a rercent poll (in the past few weeks), the most read of the whole newspaper, which incidently is the most read in the whole dati-leumi public. Daum is a goy and a nobody who is posing as a religious Jew and tries to make a name for himself by insulting others, especially Rabbis. You should be ashamed of yourself.
8. Isn't interesting ...
Yaron ,   Sact   (12.16.09)
how H' works!
9. What You Forget Daum
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim,   (12.16.09)
B"H What you conveniently forget Daum is that this what you call insignificant rabbi is one of the very few who holds Torah higher than his government paid job. In this, he shown himself to be worthy of the highest praise. I maintain rabbi Melamed would make an excellent Defense Minister. Why? Because he is able to establish a proper, Jewish scale of priorities and implement it under pressure.
10. You're wrong - but you're right
Adam ,   Hispin, Israel   (12.16.09)
You're wrong to write all of that libel about HaRav Melamed. You're right that he and his yeshiva will benefit from all of the free publicity. There is an easy way to end the tension between religious soldiers and the government. All the government has to do is stop kicking Jews out of their homes.
11. The lines are all to blurry
Edan ,   Tel Aviv   (12.16.09)
Between political and moral views, and ones military obligation to follow orders. This applies to the left-wing soldiers as well who refuse to serve in the territories. Without a real existential threat (ie., war with Syria or Iran), Israeli soldiers more and more find themselves asking themselves " Is what I am doing consistent with my world view? Is it the right thing to do?".... I feel that our military could break down at any moment because of these things.,...
12. To those who insist the rules are "simple"
Abba ,   Modi'in, Israelj   (12.16.09)
The rules are not quite so simple. Every soldier must decide for himself what is a legal order and what is not. Unfortunately, the army doesn't provide lawyers in the field. Several weeks ago a soldier shot a tied-up POW in the foot upon the order of his commanding officer (filmed and broadcast world-wide). If he had refused, all the lefties who are attacking Rabbi Melamed now would have applauded his insubordination. But soldiers who refuse to evict Jews from their homes in the absence of immediate military necessity, which would be a violation of both Torah and International Law, are vilified, as are the rabbis who support them. The hypocracy of the left knows no limits.
13. Somebody didn't like my email, here it is again!
m   (12.16.09)
Hanoch Daum, as an observant Jew do you know about LASHON HA RA? You should, because this article is only that, it has no other merits whatsoever. This is what happens when you write for a lefty YNET who enjoys observant Jews who denigrate their roots. Looking at the "Jewish" rubrics all I can see is how bad the observant Jews are, how bad Judaism is and all these thanks to people like you and others. No nice deeds in the religious community? No chesed?
14. I support the rabbi
Jew ,   Israel   (12.16.09)
When I made aliyah many years ago I never dreamt that Jewish soldiers would throw Jewish families out of their homes. How horrible. I support Rabbi Melamed.
15. The IDF was created to protect Jews and their homes.
Chaim ,   Israel   (12.16.09)
The IDF and Israeli police forces were created to protect Jews and their homes. It is an absolute perversion to turn the IDF and Israeli police into persecutors of Jews. The Rabbi deserves to be a big winner for standing against this evil. Every good Jew should.
16. Barak's new life
Abba ,   Modi'in, Israel   (12.16.09)
Daum, the author of this smear against Rabbi Melamed, has it backwards. In reality it's Ehud Barak who is getting a new life as a result of the controversy, Before the story broke, he was a complete loser, a political has-been, rejected by the voters rejected by his own party, under investigation for spending taxpayers' money on fancy European hotels, and for hiring illegal foreign workers in his home. The flap with Rabbi Melamed couldn't have come at a more opportune time. It gave him the much needed chance to divert the public's attention from his self-inflicted misfortunes, at least temporarily, and to manipulate the media into investing him with the false persona of a principled public servant. What a farce.
17. The Bitter Truth IS ..
Christy ,   Boston, US   (12.17.09)
Israel is slitting it's own throat by requiring soldiers to act against their people and their country. Quote " Rather, he made headlines because he uttered some radical words." From my point of view he felt compelled to state what he did because he's a rabbi and cares for his people. He certainly can't be responsible for how the media handles what he says. Who gave him the headlines? Does he control all the media in Israel?
18. Daum: I'm one very disappointed reader
Moshe ,   Tel Aviv   (12.18.09)
This article is completely unnecessary, not to say devoid of ANY content whatsoever. No matter what your views are on this issue, you don't have the right to denigrate anyone for the sake of vapid journalism. As a non-haredi reader who appreciates unbiased articles, I'm extremely disappointed with your conduct and I would even go as far as to say that you owe this rabbi and your readers an apology! Chanukah Sameach!
