Sadly, the story is quite true. The only item I quibble with is that the article states that the abscondings occurred in the late 1950s. I believe it was the late 1940s, possibly the early 1950s as well. Newborn infants of Yemeni heritage were given mostly to Ashkenazi women who were concentration camp survivors and could not conceive children; the birth mother – who was sedated during the delivery (very unusual in Israel, even to this day, therefore impliedly quite a deliberate act) – was told that the baby was stillborn. It would have been relatively easy to talk a newly-emigrated woman out of any need to see the baby or to hold a funeral. Some people claim that toddlers were also taken away, but that is not true. One sits shiva for a child who lives for a month; one buries a child who lives for a month. The parents would have asked to have the bodies for the funeral, and would not have relented on this point –Yemeni Jews (at least in the late 1940s) were quite orthodox.
