I fully agree that we need to draw a line, the Jewish people's global population is around 13mio people and growing very slowly. Conversion is not the answer. Successful marriages are built on many things such as similar backgournds, upbringing of the kids and having similar goals. Most mixed marriages fail as most of these key principles are missing. I'm in a mixed marriage. My children are being raised somewhat less Jewish than I was, but about how Jewish I wished to be raised. They will grow up knowing that they're Jewish (even some Orthodox think not, since their mother is not Jewish), going to a Jewish preschool, getting bar and bat mitsvahed, going to Hebrew and Sunday school, knowing their history, and, quite importantly, knowing the importance of Israel. I cannot say how they will raise their kids, but I hope they follow the same path. Mixed marriages, if treated with love and respect, will only increase the number of Jews. Treated with disdain as it is now, it will reduce the number of Jews.

Because there are two sides of me, I very much like your way of thinking and feeling...these are great guidelines to go by and I compliment you on your post. Having said that, without sounding racist or bigoted (for you Charles), it is a real tragedy for us Jews when one of us marries outside their faith. It is not even a matter of religion, but more a matter of the continuation and survival of the Jewish faith. I don't think the Clintons are anymore friends of Israel as their predecessors, it just happens that their daughter fell for "one of us". It is that simple. Let's just wish them well and move on.
