Don't be confused by the article or some comments! This is not about the wedding and the party. In Israel, they are often very modest. This is about buying a "dira" in Yerushalaytim, which means getting in debt up over your head (especially when the parents have never worked a day).
Again, this is all about the Dira.

My husband's great-grandfather was a Kabbalah sage, whose picture you can find in most religious stores.
This Kabbala sage was also a shoemaker, supporting his family, not depending on others to do it for him.
Oh, isn't there something in the bible about how "man is to eke out a living by the sweat of his brow"?

Some religious "beliefs" ARE facts. Like these: Unless Hashem wishes it, no doctor can save a life, no army can save a country, and no taxpayer is "hardworking" if he isn't supporting Torah. A father whose daughter can't marry a scholar because he can't buy her an apartment played his cards all wrong. He sends the message that Hashem didn't do His job. If he's a loyal Jew, he'd give much more than a kidney to prevent that.
