3. True
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.13.10)
All that Ettinger says is true, and is certainly known to the Government. Both Netanyahu and Yaalon wrote books that accepted what Ettinger says. The entire Likud, with the exception of Meridor, was elected because they believed what Ettinger says. But the fact is that Netanyahu chose to give Barak the Defense Ministry instead of the far more competent Yaalon. The fact is that Netanyahu is leading the surrender to Emanuel Rahm's dictate, and none of the ministers or knesset members are doing anything. There is no need for a wake-up call, just an answer why is Netanyahu doing what he knows is so dangerous.
4. take a gamble?
jay ,   USA   (01.13.10)
Israel could take a gamble that Obama will fail. But that is a huge gamble. After one year nobody knows if Obama's poll numbers will rise, or if he will be a success or not. Reagan dipped in his first year. Bill Clinton did also. But if Obama is successful the Democratic party in Congress will follow his lead. Lieberman and McCain will not matter. And Israel is already incredibly isolated. Relations with Turkey are deteriorating. If Israel rebuffs the U.S. and embarrasses Obama, and Obama is successful, Obama will have even more political capital to put on more pressure on Israel for peace. And America has plenty of pressure available! From Israel's nuclear program, to foreign aid, to U.N. resolutions blocked, to even leveling off diplomatic support. If America stops unconditional diplomatic backing it is going to allow the E.U. the Arabs, and all other American allies to step up pressure on Israel. Without the U.S. Israel would be totally isolated. America knows it. Russia and China are more interested in the Arab states resources and support. Israel has nothing to offer but technology to them, and much of that military tech was partly financed by the U.S.
5. Nobody ever pressures Israel to do something good for Israel
Chaim ,   Israel   (01.13.10)
Whenever pressure is exerted against Israel to do something, it proves two things: 1) Whatever Israel is being pressured to do is bad for Israel. Otherwise we'd do it freely. 2) Whoever is applying the pressure knows it is bad for Israel. Otherwise they wouldn't resort to pressure. Nobody ever pressures Israel to do something good for Israel. As a matter of principle. Israel should NEVER make decisions based on foreign pressure. They can only be disastrous.

8. In case Mr. Ettinger hasnt noticed....
Proud Israeli   (01.13.10)
It is not just President Obama who is pressuring Israel to withdraw from the West Bank and recognize Palestinian statehood. Every recent US President, including conservative Israel supporter George W. Bush, has called for Israel to negotiate a withdrawal from the West Bank and to negotiate toward the creation of a Palestinian state. Ettinger sets up a false and self-serving argument that Obama is all of the sudden creating this pressure. Obama may have different tactics and style (as say Bush) but he is basically calling for the same thing. a two state solution. The United States, the world, and many Israelis, want to see an end to the occupation and recognition of a Palestian state alongside Israel with secure and recgonized borders. What Mr. Ettinger is doing is arguing for perpetual stall and mirage tactics such that the two state solution will never come about. This is not in Israel's interests.
9. right on. aramerican ideas and obama are harmful to israel a

and we can and should stand p for what is best for israel obama certainly doesn't know what is in our best interest and his best interests certainly do not match ours.
10. American silliness-what did they expect?
Sam ,   Canada   (01.13.10)
This leftist American regime with the leftist Jewish American advisers and far-left Jewish naggers thought that a little American pressure for a settlement freeze would bring about peace in the mid-east. These naive dupes don't realize that there is no give by the Palestinians on 1)acceptance of Israel as a Jewish-majority state 2)Jerusalem 3) refugees For lack of any other ideas the Americans put the emphasis on settlements
11. American support has been mostly symbolic
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.13.10)
Since 1948 the US has supported various Arab regimes far more than they have ever supported us. We need to tell the world that we are a sovereign nation and start acting like one.
12. #8 - Proud Israeli, In case you haven't noticed...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (01.13.10)
Our "Peace Partners" the Palestinians haven't even been able to make peace among themselves and their charters still view the entirety of the former British Mandate as "Occupied Palestine". Read both Fatah's and Hamas' charters for a wake up call. Any Israeli recognition of yet another Arab state in Judea and Samaria will not be returned by any other Arab state, including the hypothetical Palestinian state. As much as the "occupation" costs us and as much as the Palestinians complain about us being there, our presence there makes life much more bearable than the PA's and preempts the inevitable war that would occur between Israel and an Arab-controlled Judea and Samaria. PS- Who cares what the Americans want. They don't have to live with the consequences of their ill-conceived ideas like we do and judging from the tone of your talkback, it sounds like you don't either. Israel is and always will be a far more strategic ally to the US than any Arab country...
13. Dangerous Course
singer ,   NYC USA   (01.13.10)
I watched the interview on the Internet yesterday and Mitchell did not make that statement without qualification. He said it was not the way he wished to go. Overall the discussion avoided what leverage the US has, and really he was put in a corner and basically mentioned historical approaches, not his own. The need for the Palestinian's to have their own state is an Israeli solution. Israel can no longer ignore the huge growth of the palestinian community within Israel and within the occupied areas. This doesn't include the growing refugee camps in Lebanon, etc. Add to this the shrinking of the IDF forces and the fall-off in recruitment. The growth of the settlements means more troops deployed to protect them. The bad economy and growing poverty in Israel adds to the difficulties. Possible sanctions from the EU and the UN over the Goldstone report which comes to maturity and will be referred to the Security council soon. The EU's desire to support a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state. The US no longer needing Israel as a base of operations, having Iraq, Afganistan, and Now Yemen to work out of. Including a US friendly Egypt and Jordan. Pulling funding from Israel and removing military support is an existential threat to Israel. A quick two state solution within the two-year time frame is currently in Israel's interests.
14. re: Joe
Proud Israeli   (01.14.10)
Actually, you are ignoring the Saudi Peace plan, which would recognize Israel, in return for Israel's recognition of a Palestinian state. (Yes, the borders would have to be negotiated, and yes, the right of return for all Palestinian refugees can not be agreed by Israel, but nevertheless, the Arab states have shown they are ready to make Peace, and the Israeli government is the one stalling). As for the Palestinians, yes Hamas doesn't recognize Israel but the PA does. Hamas is an obstructionis ogranization and Israel should'nt let it block peace, which is in Israel's interest. And in case you havnt noticed, in the fight between Israel and the Palestinians, the Palestinians lost! The Intifada was a failure. The Palestinians have been living in misery, their people under occupation and subjected to checkpoints and restrictions. All that while Israel has prospered and has become a modern western style economy and government. Israel, won...Israel is strong, the Palestinians are weak, and the their approach of the Intifada failed. But Israel wont accept victory, it wont accept Yes for an answer. Even when all of the Arab states say they will recognize Israel, and the Palestinian resistance in the West Bank has mostly gone away, Israel still isn't willing to negotiate peace. The scenario you describe is not sustainable and continuing the occupation will just mean that Israel will be responsible for millions of Arabs that it is not willing to give full rights to. How is that in Israel's interests? If Israel maintains the occupation, even in the face of the Arab world's willingness to negotiate, Israel will only further drift towards international isolation from the US and the world, and it will become a 21st century South Africa. And for who? the interests of some religious nuts and resourceful secular citizens looking for a cheaper livelihood in Judea and Samaria? I assure you that most Israel's do not want that trade-off.
15. You do realize that......
Ali   (01.14.10)
Obama will probably be a one-term president. His approval ratings in the US are very low. If the Republicans caan get their act together in time he will be gone in 3 years.
16.  Obama pressure
Willbur ,   USA   (01.14.10)
Obama may lose much effect with the upcoming elections results in 10 months. Meanwhile PA refuses to talk. Bibi's Bar Ilan U address was planned prior to his going to US; it was well conceived and responded to Obama without losing ground. PA does not repesent Gaza or much of anything now.
17. Obama Vision
Ken ,   Australia   (01.14.10)
Not such a great program if your looking at it from a jewish TV set. Obama is a good mann with difficult and stupid views of the world and how its make up should be. Unfortunatly for us its a wrong view of the future, this must be made right, and so along with the african champions great mind changeing abilties, we must understand one thing, sooner or later we must wait for the change in Barrack Obamas world view in the next 3 years in his time, if change is his message, then he also has to change willingly or not, and I beleive change is comeing to him , his life is about to change and so thus is his views , on all diplomatic fronts. You see these guys have come in hitting hard as rookies and this is all they are a rookie administration, we must see this and out play them wisley untill they experience a change in what is going on for there leadership with in an everchangeing world. As events world wide progress, obamas thinking will change and he cant keep going on like a little chigago school bullie and threaten anyone he can to keep his own agenda on the table, he simply wont hold this type of leverage and he knows it. So at the end of this we need to be patient and understand that obamas got only a few good points for israel but also only a few bullying options , he cant apply preasures to the whole world for concessions coninuously, no matter how many or to whom he uses his influence to make overtures. He will need to think differently when its time to grow up. So guess who will benefit then when he does have a change and this change of mind is pre-empted by the right people who can then determine the right moves.

all you talk is nonsense, Israel not in the war with so-called pals she is in war with arab and muslim countries, which lost all wars with israel and now use "pals" as a cannon fodder. saudi's plan of recognition based on return of all "refugees" about 4 mil, so there sure will be peace and you - dhimmy. as for occupation - israel occupies it own territory - part of palestine - west bank--Judea and Samaria - Israel - is it not stuipid.

is very strong here and very popular in the US the gentelman is misreading world events ..and american politics .. on the verge of passing a health bill..taking care of the recssion that Geore Buush left behind and no matter how hard Israel tries to change the course of his Policy ,,,the Man will include Iran in the political scenario and eventually will talk to the Taliban and include them in the political process of their country ) the president is walking on water here ,..it is Republican propaganda and the neocon techniques . bad economy in israel???? are you freaking stupid or ignorant? isrsel's economy is growing by leaps and bounds. its exports are growing by the day. israel's economy is moving upwards and is extremely stable. israel is a prosperous country with tons of foreign investments where most high tech american companies have offices and plants that are doing very well (except for motorolla). israel's gdp has not suffered one iota in this recession. as a matter of fact, israel escaped the recession. there is poverty, but not on the scale you mentioned at all. most of the poor are arabs (uneducated) and the haredi society (mostly uneducated). the rest are very very comfortable. where have you been the past years???? don't you read newspapers? if you did, you'll see israel has excaped this deprssion and recession unscathed. america should only wish its economy is now as sucessful as israel's. learn before you spew your idiotic and unknowledeable comments. by the way, israel was inducted the past year into the developing nations of the world...the only mid east country to do so....also the eu is greatly expanding economic, civic and social, educational and scientific ties between the eu and israel. why do you think that is???? it is so because israel is financially sound, innovatively sucessful and culturally diverse and up there with the best of them. israel, if you have ever visited there, looks like florida, or n.y. in terms of modernity and civilian lifestyles. its economy and tourism is outstanding!!! hameed aboughaze, iranian
22. Proud Israeli, your words are prescient & wise indeed...
BBSNews ,   Charlotte, NC   (01.14.10)
...that is one of the finest analysis' I have read from anyone in Israel. Concise, accurate, and more than likely to come true if Israel does not recognize the opportunity of the Arab Peace Initiative. What an amazing breath of fresh air in these talkbacks. Thanks for writing such a sensible description, plus including a way out, of what is really going on from a pragmatic perspective. Yours is an example others should follow. Including myself.
23. Ali, you do realize that...
BBSNews ,   Charlotte, NC   (01.14.10)
...this is only year two of President Obama's term, and that to claim at this point he will be a one term President is rather futile and simply your wrong-headed wishful thinking. I think it will be quite interesting to see what his ground work and careful foundations that he has been laying play out as the next several years unfold. The President of the United States wields great power Ali, and I believe President Obama does not care about a second term. He's gotten Iraq in a position to wind down, he sent the 30,000 troops for a surge in Afghanistan, let's see how the generals do with that before making pronouncements. Health care is almost in the bag, Guantanamo is slated to be closed but the ultra-liberals will have to give way to security concerns for a while longer. He'll have time for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and he'll make time to get it well underway before the next general election. And I would not be too sure about those mid-terms. I know you have your fingers crossed and historically the party in power almost certainly will lose some seats to the minority. However, it's not a done deal. Just look at how much cash has come in to the Republican National Committee as compared to the Democratic side. But you keep on wishing for US failure, your kind tend to do that.

28. To: No. 19
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.14.10)
"Popular," you say? As of today, Obama’s popularity rating stands at 42%. When he took office very nearly a year ago, it was nearly 90%. "Very strong here," you say? As of today, Obama’s approval rating stands at 39%. When he took office very nearly a year ago, it was 88%. Obama "walking on water," you say? No, he's not. Not according to the American people. The extraordinary drop in his approval and popularity ratings represent the sharpest drop that any president has ever endured in the first 12 months of his term. Israel need to "wake up, the tide is too high,” you say? Really? For the record, in January 2009, polls showed that 56% of the American people supported Israel, of which 15% said that they "strongly" supported Israel. The polls released last week showed that a whopping 79% of the American people supported Israel, of which an astonishing 42% said that they "strongly" supported Israel. It isn’t Israel that needs to “wake up.” It is certainly not Israel that needs to be concerned that the “tide is too high.” It is Obama that needs to wake up, and Obama that needs to be concerned about the rising tide. The extraordinarily rapid decline in his approval and popularity ratings would indicate that the American people do not believe that this president walks on water. In fact, it would appear that most Americans have come to realize that this president does not know how to swim. That would make the rising tide a really big problem for Mr. Obama.
29. Mitchell’s wake-up call
Thomas ,   Sharon, US of A   (01.14.10)
An excellent opinion piece! I agree that Israel must staunchly resist White House pressure to relax it's historical Mid-East foreign policy. Western liberal give-back policies will soon put Israel on a steeper defensive down-slide.
30. Israel
Michael Pielet ,   raanana, Israel   (01.14.10)
Yoram, thank you for pointing out that strategically Israel when its vital interests are threatened has to stand up to the United States. Israel is not a banana republic and has the power to stand up to the United states when U. S. policy is attempting to force Israel to adopt policies that are against crtical israeli interests.
