1. lol democratic test? try paying taxes
ghostq   (01.25.10)
and serve the general communitie than we will talk on democrachy, after all they don't pay taxes, and complaine on missuse in other countries they would be in jail by now. for Tax fraud. all this rights don't come for free, so they better pay if they want any basic right.
2. A genuine democracy in times of
Robert Haymond ,   Ashdod, Israel   (01.25.10)
war or severe social instability must curtail otherwise legitemate protests and political activities. In Canada, where I reside when not in Israel, we had martial law under Prime Minister Trudeau when Quebec was staging violent protests over separation from the rest of the country. In World War II, civilians of Japanese origin were sent to special camps. In the latter case, it was done out of fear although much of the initiative turned out to be unjust. In Israel, everything appears to be permitted. It's a democracy gone haywire. The internal flux is overwhelming us. We are reeling from within. As Arnold Toynbee wrote about the breakdown of large social entities, in all but one case what he defined as a civilization fell apart due first to internal struggles and weaknesses and only secondarily to external enemies. I think the same theory can be applied to Israel. The social fabric is terribly split just as our Knesset is governed by coalitions of small parties each with limited self-interests. I think the term in Hebrew is "balligan".
3. to #2 they want to change the election system,
ghostq   (01.25.10)
someone told me that but I am not sure where it stands cause I think Turkey have similar problem the last elections there were preaty tight and intense.
4. Equality for all
Kamee Verdrager ,   MA - U.S.A   (01.25.10)
Robert is right Israel is a mess there is no consistency . From what I have read the police treat different groups diffewrently. The ultra religious are allowed to riot by the police until they run out of steam while the left wingers are arrested before hand and their protests are dealt a heavy hand. I don’t agree that civil liberties should be suspended and the special camps we had for the american japanese were very wrong. The police and army should not infringe civilian civil liberties and they should not treat one group different from another.
5. Civil rights...
Bruria   (01.25.10)
If you live in Israel it is obvious that the left has free reign to support our enemies and attack the very troops who defend us. They cry for support for illegals but are silent when Jews are torn from their homes in the middle of the night. It should be the same laws for all but it seems the left and their EU/UN/Saudi funding is drowning out the civil rights of everyone else. And for the record--the extreme haredi groups do not accept state money. They have their own stores, services, etc. and refuse anything that comes from the state. I do not say they are correct, but it is wrong to accuse them of "free-loading".
6. Segal and Democracy
Michael ,   Haifa   (01.25.10)
Segal, a convicted member of a Jewish terrorist group, which took the law into its own hands, preaches to us the morality of democracy here in YNET. It is grotesque.
7. Michael no 5.
Kamee Verdrager ,   MA - U.S.A   (01.25.10)
Really? What terrorist group was he a member of and why on earth is he allowed to publish a article on YNET?
8. Sorry my questions was directed to no6.
Kamee Verdrager ,   MA - U.S.A   (01.25.10)
9. Political LEFTness, er, Correctness. That's all you need to
Jae ,   Lynn US   (01.25.10)
know. My way My morals My freedom My civil rights My worldview My values not yours!!= Political Leftness, er, Correctness
10. Dead Wrong about ACRI
Andrew ,   Jerusalem   (01.25.10)
On October 29, 2008, the Israeli High Court of Justice approved a Jewish march through the Israeli Arab city of Umm al-Fahm. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) "welcome[d]" the court´s decision, since "freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy, and its most genuine test is in the facilitation of its most outrageous, extreme, and controversial forms. "
11. I do agree that the police are stifling protests
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.25.10)
Without a doubt, though they are far more gentle with the extreme leftists than they are anybody on the right. My objection is that the ACRI is protesting in favor of apartheid and racism. So in short they were in fact committing a crime with their racist view point.
12. The article is unclear
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.25.10)
First, the author states that Hagai Elad was detained. Furtner on, he states that Hagai Elad was arrested. Which is it? Moreover, the protest watch outside the homes of Jews in Sheikh Jarrah was not legal (no demonstration permit was issued and this WAS a demonstration, not a "watch"); nor was it peaceful.
13. In my humble yellow opinion Leftists are fascists
BBSNews 958:2:700:0 ,   Charlotte, NC   (01.25.10)
14. Segal and 'civil' rights..
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (01.25.10)
Are oxymorons. Rational civil rights law would preclude building settlements on stolen land, but according to Segal, such actions would be depriving the 'civil' rights of Jews. The idea of 'one-man, one-vote', is anathema to most Jews in Israel. So is the idea of 'equal protection of the law' if it allows non-Jews the same rights as Jews. Trying to use civil rights as a cover for protecting criminals is not only approved but applauded by Segal and his ilk..
15. civil rights
aline ,   israel   (01.25.10)
Try Syria for civil rights !!!! According to France 2 ( French TV) today , a large group of Kurds fled Syria where they didn't have the most basic rights!!!!! I rest my case !
16. No civil rights for people I hate
Father Stalin ,   Haifa   (01.25.10)
17. Kamee #7
Michael ,   Haifa   (01.25.10)
Extract from N.Y. Times July 22nd 1995...Joel Greenberg "In a state of war, I don't expect Israeli radio to be neutral," said Haggai Segal, the station's news editor, who was jailed for two years during the 1980's for belonging to a Jewish underground that killed and maimed Palestinians.
18. Haggai Is A Bit Wrong
Yisrael Medad ,   Shiloh   (01.25.10)
Actually, about 15 years ago ACRI did indeed get involved in the Temple Mount issue of entrance to help Noam Federman
19. Haggai Segal was found guilty and
Robert Haymond ,   Ashdod, Israel   (01.25.10)
served out his punishment in the 1980s, about twenty-five years ago. He may have changed since then or altered his views and behaviour. So why does it need to be brought up now? I am an old man and I can tell you, without a doubt, that during a long life, I, and all other human beings, are marked by character flaws, regrets, failures and behaviours which, if we are not psychopaths (without conscience) or extraordinarily self-deluded, will give us many moments of shame. So, in the case of Haggai Segal, let's show a little more understanding since he has already paid the price required and let's try to understand what kind of a man he is now.
20. ichzel

21. Michael no 17
Kamee Verdrager ,   MA - U.S.A   (01.25.10)
Thanks for the info, i'll google this further as it sounds interesting, I didn't know there were Jewish terrorists in Israel.
22. Kamee #21
Michael ,   Haifa   (01.26.10)
Israel is a very complex country. Talkbacks oversimplify by trying to depict everything in either black or white, whereas the reality is different and innumerable shades of grey. Google is a good start for seeking reality. Good luck and all the best.
23. Right reaction
Professor Nudelman ,   Tel Aviv   (01.26.10)
Example of America: Obama must purge the Democrats of neo-progressives like Emmanuel, Axelrod and others like Stalin did in the 20s and 30s. These people did not learn anything. As Lenin said, to move forward we need destroy the old conservative socialists.
