1. How manymore innocent people will the police arrest?
Mo   (01.27.10)
They arrest them, make big announcements to the press, hype it up so that they destroy their reputations (and that of all 500,000 Jews living over the "green line"), and then release them for lack of evidence. This is not justice. It's slander and character assasination.
2. Police looking pathetic. This Rabbi was held with a blindfol
rebecca ,   Modiin   (01.27.10)
Our police seem to be arresting anyone that's upset them, just to look like they are doing something. First the Kahane kid, already released no evidence, then 10 Yeshiva students, 5 already released on no evidence, and some of them are minors, and now a Rabbi also released on no evidence. According to another paper this Rabbi had to meet his lawyer with a blindfold on and was not allowed to keep his siddur. And then the court gives the police more time to make up something other than "he's not telling us what we want to hear." And while the Police mess up on this investigation of a burnt carpet and a few holy books, the State tears down a synagogue. Nice one Israel.
3. Either this story leaves out disturbing details ...
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (01.27.10)
... or another report is without foundation. According to A7, "Rabbi Shapira’s lawyer, Moti Grossman of the Honenu Civil Rights Organization, said that he met with his client after midnight in the Petach Tikvah police station, and said he was shocked to see the rabbi “with his eyes blindfolded as if he were a terrorist." This article names two others as his lawyers, but they're consistent in mentioning Honenu. A7 adds additional charges. If true, they suggest heads should roll within police forces responsible for those living across the Green Line. It's important therefore that a full and accurate picture of what happened comes out.
4. summary
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.27.10)
Israeli police arrest a citizen without any evidence. After hours of questioning where he denies any connection to the crime, they bring in the SHABAK agent. Fortunately, the SHABAK agent didn't have time to "convince" him to admit he was guilty. Democracy indeed.
5. Let me get this straight
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.27.10)
' suspected of refusing to testify and disrupting the investigation' When in the hell did this become a crime? Time to arrest the police for false imprisonment and criminal misconduct. They merely suspected that he would not help which he was never required to do in the first place. The police are totally out of control
6. Where is B'Tselem?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (01.27.10)
They would be all over this like stink on scheiss if a Palestinian was arrested, even for something he was caught doing in the act. But why do I even bother to ask this question? We all know the answer.
7. #8 I've almost forgotten that you have Police in Israel
observer   (01.27.10)
I mean those Israel reserves for dealing with the armed-to-teeth settlers.
8. Police abuse Palestinian rights of course they
Jack   (01.28.10)
Will abuse the rights of citizens. It is called the slipery slope. That which you allow to be done to noncitizens and minorities will be come the norm and be done against citizens. They will bulldoze your houses, detain you without cause, torture you mildly, and otherwise do to you exactly what you permit them to do to the others. It is inevitable.
