y don't they have work out in the Idf.
4. a life of leisure
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (02.08.10)
study torah. when tired of that, go work out. when done, go home. tomorrow: repeat. that's great if you are only thinking about yourself. if you don't work or contribute to the society that financially supports your life of leisure, shame on you for being a freeloader. maybe you should work out your brain muscle and figure out some life skills?

Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (02.08.10)
I don't get it. Once again, our tax money is going to help them build their muscles, get financial advancement etc. They can all the fitness training they need in the IDF.
7. Avi - Secular are not much better then Chariedim when it com
Wonderer   (02.08.10)
es to the army. At least with the Ultra-Orthodox its a religiou belief. With secular its just selfishness.
8. WHAT ABOUT GETTING A JOB.
naro ,   nyc   (02.08.10)
30 year old: "I spend half the day at the yeshiva and half the day at the gym. It makes me feel good, and it's healthy." WHAT ABOUT GETTING A JOB. WHY SHOULD THIS PARASITE BE SUPPORTED BY SOMEBODY ELSE?
9. half day at gym- half day at yeshiva?
nadav ,   tlv   (02.08.10)
hmm, and no time for work! great programme, great way to integrate pathetic layabouts into our society- at the tax payer's expense. Maybe i should quite my full time job and ask the government to pay for my gym membership and for mindless study of superstitious texts from 1000 years ago...? not a bad idea, eh? great country we got here!
10. ridiculous
adam ,   miami,fla   (02.08.10)
How about serving in the military or working? I would love to sit home and "study" half the day and exercise the other half. However, as a citizen of the state of Israel, I served three years as a combat soldier (Golani) and work full time to support my family, in addition to being observant. A very serious flaw of the State that allows these people to take precious resources from the State without giving anything in return.
11. Unfair Criticisms
Hello   (02.09.10)
There are is some unfair criticism in the comments section, complaining that the students aren't contributing to the work force or getting a job. But the article says that the students are training precisely so that they can get the certificate and become gym trainers. Best wishes to them in their studies and their training.
12. #2 Let me keep it simple
Avi ,   Israel   (02.09.10)
let me keep it simple so that you will understand. You see people have free will and are free to belive in a God or not to belive. So to judge and slander others according to a religious faith / belief they do not belive in is wrong, much in the same way you can not and will not impose religious law on non belivers, Israel is a democratic country and not a country run according to Jewish law. Hope that clarifies your your question.
13. #9 nadav its not half a day at the gym
Avi ,   Israel   (02.09.10)
No nadav its 1/3 of the day at the gym and then they have to the Yeshiva to read the never ending story and then if theres time may be a riot or two and on the way back pick up their social security check provided by those nasty secular people who pay for this so called life style of theirs !
14. to #11 yeah but who is paying for the training
ghostq   (02.09.10)
oh seculars, cause it takes alot of money to get trained. they need to have a job to efford the training, so recheck it.
15. You seculars will always criticize religious Jews
avraham ,   nyc   (02.09.10)
whether for learning Torah or for exercising. You don't really need any reasons to pick up on the people who carry the burden of Torah on their backs while your lives are devoid of most essential Jewishness which is learning Torah and observance of mitzvos on daily basis.
16. All of you complaining
nr ,   los angeles, usa   (02.09.10)
about the Haredim are living off the American taxpayers at the tune of billions of dollars a year. Don't bother answering back about all Israel gives in return, because the Haredim can make the same argument.
17. This is not good news
Loyal Jew ,   Efrat   (02.09.10)
Western sports are Hellenism pure and simple. I can't believe these people asked a rav about going into it. What shul will let them daven with them now? Who will marry their daughters?
18. anti-religious hatred
SL ,   NY   (02.09.10)
It's so sad that an article about how orthodox Jews are receiving training to become teachers for physical fitness--aimed, it seems, like increasing haredi representation in the job force--elicits the kind of vulgar, anti-Semitic rants seen above. We are sadly so divided.
19. There are about 60 hesder yeshivot.
Michael ,   Toronto   (02.09.10)
Here's a partial list in English: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesder#List_of_Yeshivot There are also religious mechinot (one year programs that combine preparatory activities for the army with Torah study). 80% of hesder students go to combat units (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3757464,00.html). Those that go to Hesder programs are on average more healthy and athletic than the average North American, even before going to the army, but probably so are most people in Israel.
20. to #15 they can learn on their on expence.
ghostq   (02.09.10)
seculars tax money shouldn't go to their pockets. and every time we hear new demands for money other wise they won't assmble the coalition in the parliament the realigious basicaly extort more and more money, money that neaded for seculars well fair and not the religious who doesn't work, no body tells you not to study but do that at your own expense not on the secular expense.
21. to #16 not in Israel, they don't pay taxes
ghostq   (02.09.10)
and make violant riots.
22. To 1
Aryeh ,   NY/USA   (02.09.10)
Have you heard of Nahal Haredi? It would be nice if the army would let it grow and produce more Haredi soldiers. You should encourage the Nahal Haredi expansion rather than complain about those who can't serve because the army has its limits.
23. Question? If U are this haredim..
AR ,   USA   (02.09.10)
or ultra orthadox or whatever.. you dont serve in the IDF? If so why?>
24. #15 Yes, Avraham but...
Ezra ,   Canada   (02.09.10)
... if the Haredim would share the burden of defending their country by serving in the army with their brothers, the secular Jews would complain less, isn't it ?
25. to 22, Yes Aryeh...
Ezra ,   Canada   (02.09.10)
...we have all heard of Nahal haredi. But it is only a battalion size unit when haredi conscripts should fill three brigades. And it does not grow because of the army but because of the haredi leaders who only accept to send "misfits" to the army.
26. #22 Areyeh have you heard of aliah
Avi ,   Israel   (02.10.10)
You know moving to Israel, serving in the IDF getting a job, paying taxes, its what the rest of us do, except these parasites who claim they are to busy studying the never ending story to work, serve in the army, as this article proves apparently they have plenty of time and all of this paid for by our tax money.
27. Sounds like the executive class.
Eliyahu ,   Yrushalayim   (02.10.10)
But the article was calculated to pit anyone that keeps Torah against those that don't or won't. You cannot keep Shabbat, kashrut, family purity, the chagim, et. al. and be a free-loader and not desecrate The Name.
28. In other news Haredim eat breakfast & lunch
Aaron ,   Petach Tikvah Israel   (02.10.10)
why is it always news when haredim do normal things? Who cares?
29. One criticism - Be a Dad.
Josh   (02.12.10)
At his age and with a family, he sure sounds like he has taken a very childish approach to life. "I spend half the day at the yeshiva and half the day at the gym. Shouldn't you spend time raising your kids? Maybe the day at the job an hour at the gym and some time with family. "Six days you shall work." is the mitzvah. I wish you luck finding a job, but being a father is not something that should be neglected and this article is written to sound like you could care less about visiting your family at home. Being a father is not a footnote in the page of life. Your seed is your legacy.
30. #23 - because they consider themselves...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (02.14.10)
...the Master Race of the Chosen and it is the obligation of others to sacrifice themselves for their beliefs.
