distinction. PSSST What are the social costs of all that boozing? Lets see: 1) Increased policing. 2) Club violence and social violence 3) Health Issues 4) Family Breakup 5) Lost productivity (oxymoron in Israeli economy) Can you put a cost on these social ills?
2. Whiskey - No Chance
Jo Guy ,   Jerualem   (02.22.10)
Maybe if they sold decent whiskey here, it'd have a better chance. You can easily get Absolut and Smirnoff everywhere you want for a reasonable price. It's obvious the Russians are controlling the market and vodka is their drink of choice. When I see GlenFiddich for 70 NIS a bottle, I guarantee you the stats will change.
3. #1 - and before vodka... #2 -- I dunno about that :(
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (02.22.10)
...it was arack. Who you gonna blame for that? Israelis used arack as a mixer just like vodka. #2 - I have no problem paying top shekel for Black Bush, but I do wish it was less expensive. I think Israelis like vodka because as you say it's cheap, and fairly taste-free, blends with whatever it is added to. Israel has great wine, both nonkosher and kosher, but unlike every other Mediterannean country I've been to, Israelis don't drink very much. Darn change.

Why on earth do people actually drink Arrack?

6. #3 - The point is what is done with the vodka

How many drunken home break-ins and drunken brawling and anti-Semitic harrassment on the streets of Israel between "Jews" (pfff!) were there because of Arrack, before the sad phenomenon to which Al is quite correctly alluding in TB #1? Harrassment which we bought with our taxmoney out of good faith. It is a horrible scourge resulting from a horrible political mistake.
7. Arrack
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (02.22.10)
Good arrack is a joy on the lips. I won't mention brand names here, but there is some very good stuff here (unfortunately most of it is imported), An icy jiggerful, a splash of water a handful of pistachio nuts can go along way on a hot summer night. And just ask the cops about drunken Jewish arack drinkers. Booze driven crimes did not start with the Russian aliya, no matter how much you want to believe it.

My wife who is a Ukranian Jewish immigrant drinks some red wine on Shabbat and Pesach yet never would drink vodka. She also keeps a strict kosher home just like all of her family members.

A good unblended Scotch whiskey way too expensive. Like 20 year old Laphroaig, from the isle of Islay, a smokey peaty smooth scotch, is nearly $300 a bottle. I only know its about 50 NIS a shot.

whiskey. It tastes good with orange juice and a lot of other things. Remember to be temperate in drinking alcohol. Heavy drinking is a sin UNLESS it is for a heavy heart. King Solomon made that one allowance for heavy drinking. Tarrying long at the wine describes an alcoholic in the Bible. It took a long time to get drunk. Why? There was less alcohol in the wine and spirits. So beware. There is far more alcohol in vodka and rum and whiskey and a lot of other drinks than in Bible times. When you wake up with a hangover, take some B vitamins since the alcohol washed out a lot of them from your body.
12. I know some non-Jewish Russians here...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (02.23.10)
...who have contributed more to the good of the country than some of the Jewish ones. Hey, some of them have even DIED for the country.

Worried Israeli Jew ,   Israel   (02.23.10)
Jews have never in the past been a drunk nation. But now, many of the young people are drinking. There is a rise in violence, murders, and fatal road accidents due to drinking. It is not all the Russians.
