1. Tradition
Ariel ,   São Paulo - Brazil   (03.11.10)
It is sad to see what has become a tradition as beautiful as the food kosher. Unfortunately ignorant people can not think for themselves, and do just what his rabbi in charge.
2. TRUE ! SALMON CONTAIN PARASITES AND EVEN MECURY !
BENJAMIN ,   SINGAPORE   (03.11.10)
3. Ridiculous ruling which we will not follow
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (03.11.10)
This reminds me of the argument by some Israeli haredim that Kinneret tap water was not kosher for Pesah for similar reasons. Didn't accept that one either. These haredim have forgotten a number of principles, one of which is that one does not impose a stringency which the tzibur (public) will not accept, for it undermines respect for other halachic decisions. This ruling further ignores the 1/60th rule, not to mention the general rule that the microscopic does not make anything unfit. This is more than a challenge to the bagel-and-lox tradition. The U-O has properly rejected this latest stringency.
4. You are what you eat? Gott in Himmel!!!!
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (03.11.10)
Hmmm....maybe these haredi rabbis are on to something?!?!? Could it be they've discovered something very basic, and now want to cure themselves??? This calls for immediate discussion!
5. to #3: How do you know that the UO's rejection was...
(03.11.10)
'properly'? are you a rabbi?
6. Consider the source, forget about it
Naftush ,   Israel   (03.11.10)
The rabbis at issue are a group that preens about raising the bar of Jewishness until only the truly fanatic can vault it. If the article makes you feel like abandoning tradition altogether, think again and don't give them the satisfaction.
7. Living and breathing is not kosher
Sagi   (03.11.10)
because the air, and in fact our entire ecological surroundings, are contaminated by bacteria and parasites. so let's all die and be done with it. We can not go on this way against the will of "God".
8. It's true
Sona ,   Canada   (03.11.10)
Yes, Salmon can have parasites. But freshwater fish are more prone to parasites than salmon so better add whitefish and trout to the list. Also the parasites commonly are found in the internal organs - not the flesh. Any eating salmon guts?
9. are living bacteria, parasites kosher?
moishe ,   Tel Aviv   (03.11.10)
Suppose some rabbi had such acuity of vision that this rabbi could see bacteria. I admit to being ignorant, and not learned, so I ca ask 1. Are bacteria kosher ? I think that grasshoppers are kosher, 2. why don't religious people eat grasshoppers ? 3. If salmon is deemed not kosher because of the POSSIBILITY of parasites: why aren't other species of fish with gills .etc,+ POSSIBLE parasites NOT kosher ? moishe
10. Oh no, so now I can't even 'risk the smoked salmon' anymore!
Truth Hertz ,   UK   (03.11.10)
11. the truth about anisakis
yitzchok ,   usa   (03.11.10)
Even according to the most stringent interpretation lox is kosher because only wild cai\aught salmon from the northern pacific have these parasites. Lox is made from farmed salmon which are not affected. Also in answer to the question of bacteria it does not render non kosher because they are not visible to the naked eye as ids the anisakis worm. By the way according to the health departments these is a disease caused by the anisakis worm I believe it is called anisakitis which causes diarhea and other stomach symptoms. So if after eating wild salmon or some of the other fishes that are affected and are having stomach trouble that is the probable cause.
12. WHALE MEAT TOO- JAPAN- HIGH RATE OF DEATH EATING FISH:-)
Benjamin   (03.11.10)

13. geeat, so we are not to eat wild salmon?
dov ,   ny   (03.11.10)
and instead eat the more environmentally destructive farmed variety? Good going....
14. Give me a break! We ll know what is wrong with reform & cons
Regular Jew ,   LA US   (03.11.10)
ervative, reconstruction, but this is an example of what is wrong, imo, with most orthodox... fence around a fence around a fence around a fence-- when is it enough already? now, salmon are going to be grown in tanks? what? AmI overreacting , is this the way to approach life or this meshugah?
15. Fins and Scales
Eddie ,   london UK   (03.11.10)
Since salmon have Fins and Scales, they are a permitted species of fish. Any food can have contamination. I have never seen a single worm in smoked , baked or grilled salmon, nor in raw salmon. The motivation for those nutter rabbis is: a) money - they can start certifiying a super glatt kosher fish b) power - they will attract extremists, just like Al Qaeda is taking supporters away from hamas.
16. Are they for real?
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot, Israel   (03.11.10)
Is there no end to their (excuse the expession) nit picking? #3 was quite oorrect. #5 the OU is very respected authorizatrion of Kasharot in the US and abroad, your comment shows a deep lack of knowledge.
17. LET MY PEOPLE GO. (END)
Alfie Knowkes ,   Golan   (03.11.10)
18. DO WHAT I DO INSTEAD
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (03.11.10)
Eat Haredim ,their rabbis are especially tasty ,very good with worcestershire sauce and mustard. No parasites there (or are they???)
19. You dumb suckers
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (03.11.10)
This was a Purim joke, not real.
20. more religious stupidity......
marko ,   tel aviv   (03.11.10)
21. Kosher food
Harold ,   NY, USA   (03.11.10)
During Moses and when the Jews were standed in the desert for 40 years did they ate Kosher food I bet not and they ate what ever they found. Now the Rabi is rich and can say which food is Kosher and which one is not. LOL
22. old story
mordechai ,   jerusalem   (03.11.10)
This issue was debated in the Tamud and the fish were deemed kosher. If there is no evidence that the biological situation has changed since then, there is no reason to question the determination in the Talmud. Anyone who wishes to do so is free to start his own new religion.
23. Purim Joke
Les ,   Melbourne, Aust   (03.12.10)
This was circling around the internet at purim time, i'm pretty sure it was a purim joke :-D
24. THE ENVIROMENT IN THE SEA NO GOOD LAH...
Benjamin ,   singapore   (03.12.10)

SALMON FORM SOME COUNTRIES ARE ALSO CONTAINING HIGH RADIATION ! CAVIER- BALKAN , SYRIA , IRAN ALL NOT SAVE ALSO ! VODKA AND CAVIER ALL TOO DANGEROUS, BABY IT IS DANGEROUS ! LET GO KERALA- COCHIN BRAHMINIC- VEGETARIAN FOOD ! COCHIN jEWS , ORIENTAL JEWS NO PROBLEM COMFORTABLE WITH VEG DIET :-)
25. kosher business
chaim ,   miami fl usa   (03.12.10)
be prepared for special brands of salmon that has the rabinical stamp of approval, this method is the new way of making money, first remove the karshrut element of a product and then fool the population that if you want to be truly kosher buy only my product. it was used with the hair from India. and comes Passover the rabbies really make a lot of money by giving only their products the Passover seal of approval. that alone would not be so bad but their Kosher for passover products come from the cheapest producks in the market, all they do is change the lable Do not use religion to make you rich on the backs of the true beleivers
26. Terrible
Kobi ,   NY   (03.12.10)
American Jews cannot live without bagels and lox!!!
27. Thou Shalt Not...
Arn ,   Yehud   (03.12.10)
We are the religion of "NO." These orthodox rabbis are light years removed from the orthodox rabbis of even fifty years ago. The rabbis we have now are light years removed from Judaism... from people - and even from God. Believe me, if they were really as close to God as they pretend they would tremble and stutter. When was the last time you saw a rabbi tremble and stutter?
28. Ill be spending the rest of my life doing Chuva
Jerry Diamond ,   Toronto Ontario   (03.12.10)
Ya right Salmon is not kosher but the bottom feeding dirtiest fish of all the Carp fish is considered kosher. Kosher or not I would never eat Carp but salmon well I guess I will have to start doing chuva for the rest of my life
29. stand-up
