31. What is kosher?
Barb ,   Toronto, Canada   (03.12.10)
Soes this mean that vegetable that grow in the ground eg. lettuce, are no longer kosher because tiny ants, insects, bacteria, microbes etc. may still remain even after washing?
32. I spent the whole summer processsing Salmon
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (03.12.10)
at "Kenai Riverbend" which is a fishing charterer in Soldotna Alaska. We processed Kings...Reds...Silver Salmon...Dolly Varden, and so forth and so on. I cut up and packaged loads of North Pacific Salmon and never saw any parasites in the bright red meat. The only thing that does come by occasionally is a salmon with a big bite out of it from a seal that tryed to eat it. We have plenty of Jewish customers who have been coming to Kenai Riverbend for years. Maybe the guys making the decisions should come up and cut some salmon for the summer. Google it on the internet...(Kenai Riverbend). I think they need to investigate more before making such a statement about the salmon in the North Pacific. When they pull out 80 pound King Salmon out of the Kenai River, with fresh red meat.....do you really believe they are sick and infested? I have not seen this so called infestation....and I cut and bagged Salmon all last summer and the one before. Come up and visit Alaska....see for yourself.
33. I worked the past two summers processing salmon.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage,Alaska   (03.12.10)
I worked at Kenai Riverbend Resorts in Kenai Alaska. Google (Kenai Riverbend Resorts). The salmon coming through has very red meat and did not show any of this parasite paranoid behaviour that the accusers are testifying to. These salmon were clearly healthy and not infested. We cut up 35 to 80 pound Kings which looked very healthy to me. The Reds and Silvers were just as healthy and free form disease. The only fish that looked different were the ones with a big bite out of them from a seal. We have plenty of Jewish customers who come up to fish at Kenai Riverbend every summer. Come up and visit if you want to see the best salmon in the world. The water isn't polluted up here. The salmon and Halibut are great.
34. Covered in scales
Keren ,   IL-BR   (03.12.10)
In my humble opinion,if a fish is covered in scales,it is kosher, period .And if the "parasites" they contain are not harmful for health, they keep being kosher.Period. I will keep eating all types of fishes as long as they are covered in scales, unless something really based in Torah proves me the opposite. DonĀ“t worry ,Steven Wilson from Alaska because this is a parasitary bs.
35. What is kosher?
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (03.12.10)
Salmon, which is not my favorite fish, is suddenly not kosher. Hip,hip hooray. Gee whiz, the only reason I would eat this fish was it is my wife's favorite fish. Now I'm spared. Seriously, is this the best our leaders can come up with? I'm beginning to think that there is no such thing as KOSHER.
36. Parasites
ik ,   USA   (03.13.10)
not only do most fish contain parasites occassionally but also does beef. COOKING generally KILLS them.
37. Kosher
Marilyn ,   USA   (03.13.10)
It kind of irks me that when Rabbi's were needed here in the US to deal with the Kosher scandal, they seemed to have dissappeared. People were just left to handle everything by themselves. I still don't think that most Rabbis have dealt with it.
38. I used to import Smoked Salmon to Israel
Vernon Marriott ,   Tel Aviv   (03.13.10)
...and worked in the industry for a good many years. The Rabbis who made this ruling clearly have no understanding of Salmon or any form of vet science. If a Salmon has a parasitc worm, it will affect the colour and quality of the fish - this will be quite obvious when the fish is being gutted and filleted. Such fish will be difficult to sell or market as Smoked Salmon - as it would be so obvious.
39. Jonas to the rescue .... !
The kosher   (03.13.10)
I think that the only parasites in NY are this haredi group. They are part of the non-kosher sect, and we should thank the almighty that they will no longer contaminate our Salmon -- our bagels -- our cream cheese ? As one commentator # 20 wrote: More religious STUPIDITY, as if we didn't have enough of those in the world.
40. The rabbis are treif - the whole lot of them!
al Farabi ,   Johannesburg, South   (03.14.10)
41. Smoked Salmon
gadot ,   herzlia   (03.14.10)
as these so call learned men do not work they look for somethink to do, so they come up with these rulings.
42. 35 , a tb from a Jew ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.14.10)
certainly not a religious one . You can't eat Salmon because being a schnorrer , that's all
43. If salmon is'nt Kosher for this group of rabbanim
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.14.10)
that's certainly not a problem for most of the religious Jews . Not kosher for you ? well , don't eat it . Nobody will say to you that you have to eat salmon . You are the looser then .
44. religion of nos
Robert   (03.16.10)
amazing what people will put up with in the name of religion- letting old men make hundreds of laws- and believing God really cares. Who are these people who pretend to KNOW what God wants? Was there Salmon in Israel 3000 odd years ago? Bagels? Cream cheese? in fact most foods of today? The Ravs have to keep busy thinking up new things, so they can keep in business.
