31. #12 - you're saying that Israel...controls Egypt?
William ,   Israel   (03.12.10)
Really? I think the Egyptians might disagree with you. And I would disagree with you considering the many Hamas members streaming across the border and the lackluster attempt to block weapons smuggling from the Sinai. Egypt is it's own sovereign nation and has control over the border there when Israel withdrew from it. Even European observers are not there anymore. If Israel IS to blame for the 1.5m inhabitants, then we also have the right to go in and clean out the undesirable Hamas which is causing the suffering. Believe me, there are many Gazans who would welcome that, especially those who remember Israel's rule there and the freedom of movement they had, all the way to Haifa, without checkpoints. So, spin your tired yarns elsewhere.
32. #13 - You forget that HAMAS has the final say
William ,   Israel   (03.12.10)
Israel never turns off electricity to Gaza. Hamas diverts it to their main supporters and administration, with the rest to Gazans resulting in rolling black outs. Regarding fuel - Hamas again diverts those shipments to their own constituents. The IDF witnessed this and average Gazans admitted this freely. Same with humanitarian aid which some Gazans were threatened to lose if they refused to show up for the Hamas celebrations in November. Sewage system and flour mill? Are you sure they were deliberately bombed, because Goldstone said it only "might" have been with no legal proof to that fact. Hamas did use the flour mill as a sniper nest which - according to Geneva Convention - takes away the protection. Should Israel now ignore Intl Law? Hamas did. Talk to them about it. You forget that at the end of the day, Hamas rules Gaza. If you want Israel to take responsibility for the poor saps there, then we have the right to clean out that terrorist nest...or will you cry foul again??
33. Gaza
Ibrahim el-Awal ,   dearborn, Michigan   (03.12.10)
Gaza is Arab territory with a border with Egypt. Israel has nothing to do with Gaza except protecting the border. Arabs should supply water, electricity, supplies. This was the situation until i967.
34. Let the weapons flow
Mahlon Drumgoole ,   Newark NJ   (03.12.10)
Of course Mr. Holmes wants the tunnels opened and the blockade of Gaza ended. More dead Jews will bring joy to him and the UN.
35. The Tighter the noose the more that HAMAS needs the Tunnels
Umm El Kul Naqba   (03.13.10)
The Noose around Gaza is the best thing that has ever happened. The terrorist attacks are down dramatically from what they were at the beginning of Intifada 2. The terrorists were only left with rocket attacks. And now that Bibi strikes back immediately at the tunnels, HAMAS is forced to reign in PRC, IJ, and EA. They are starved for everything they smuggle and can't afford to lose any smuggling capacity. Imagine trying to breathe through a tiny straw. Look at the ratio of people in Gaza along with their product requirements per capita in conjunction with the number of tunnels. Any missile or other attacks on Israel and Bibi will launch a barrage against the tunnel and make HAMAS sit up and beg. This is very good.
36. Holmes
Rob ,   USA   (03.13.10)
Mr. Holmes is on the scene again with his empty, pompous sermonizing , further convincing us that he is truly daft.
37. UN shows again how biased and useless it is
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (03.13.10)
Holmes is just another overpaid bureaucrat from the bloated UN. As everybody else above has said, the UN has proven over the past decade that it doesn't really care about human rights or international law, but is just an organ for the anti-democratic countries who hijacked it. Holmes says the UN has "called...in accordance with the Geneva conventions"??? Oh how noble of him. And how totally useless, toothless and impotent he shows the UN is. Tens of thousands of rockets too late.
38. There is no hunger or humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Ron B. ,   Lod   (03.13.10)
The “blockade” such as it is, can end any time that Hamas releases kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, revokes the genocidal Hamas Charter and agrees to recognize the right of Israel to exist and to negotiate peace with Israel. EU and USA financial contributions are being used to maintain a lawless, genocidal extremist regime that persecutes Christians and to finance terrorism against Israel. The problem to the solution in the Middle East is the jihadist ideology to whose followers it is their religious duty to fight the infidels and therefore any peace treaty or hudna can only be temporary. Peace is by definition impossible until we tackle the jihadists”. As to human rights let’s be fair : http://xrl.us/bea8f6
39. The miserable hamas, one of allah's famed curse.
mother   (03.13.10)
They, the idiots called hamas created this whole mess. All they have to do, is recognise Israel, stop the killing, the rockets, etc., and the conversation will start almost immediately (human nature). Haniyeh and his gang of cut-throat are not much different than than the killers of world fame who sacrificed their own so they can hold on to power i.e.: Stalin, Mao. Hitler, mussolini, pol pot, Japan ,and a few others. Except that today, hamas is being flooded with billions$ by the decaying UN and some imbeciles calling themselves world leaders. Today we are being blessed by another idiot called Holmes (not Sherlok), appointed by a warped UN to be the new humanitarian chief. We should thank them ALL for this unprecedented disaster -- keeping millions in bondage while arab potentates grin from ear to ear admiring the stupidity of enlightened EU and US govts.
