Carter's hatred for israel stems from these possible sources- 1) when he first visited golda meir, he was shocked that jews were not praying and were so secular. 2) Lots of jewish voters shifted to reagan and he then lost the election 3) He was not able to concquer begin in setting up a PLO state. 4) his daughter may have dated arabs and brought their narrative into his family. 5) Brzezinki, his national security advisor was a flunkee in the iran hostage rescue attempt which was pathetic and humliating to westerners and then carter paid ransom , the coward that he was and is. Jews were blamed by brezinki, and though he is intelligent and accomplished as a professor, in practical terms amounts to a flop with no military service and no real understanding of war. This has been the problem with olmert and livni who don't understand the value of geography. Even Barak in his term didn't really understand the unreliablility of syrian and palestinain assurances.The russians have Brzezinki have his number. For all of these reasons, carter hates israel. BRAVO to Carter for his honesty and candidness. I don't know why he ever apologized in the first place. He knows of what he speaks and has made statements in which he rightly criticizes Israeli political decisions, such as illegally building settlements, which impedes any prospect of a peace process. This is not anti-Semitic. I am beyond sick of any criticism of Israel being labeled "anti-Semitic." You harmfully trivialize the gravity of true anti-Semitic hate speech when you label any political criticism as anit-Semitism. Take some responsibility. If you disagree with Carter's position, disagree, object, refute-- but demanding an apology? This is IR, not kindergarten.

What Jimmy Carter has been doing, however, fits perfectly with the tried and tested anti-Semitic canards. The most infamous of them, labeling Israel as "apartheid", is not only offensive and anti-Semitic, but has absolutely no basis in reality. I suggest you visit Israel someday to see for yourself how far from truth Mr. Carter's characterization is. As for his "apology", no one has demanded one and none is expected. The "apology" in question was offered by Mr. Carter himself, interestingly enough, while his son was running for a Congress seat in a district with heavy Jewish population. In light of Carter's track record, it was understandably met with much skepticism at the time. Now by reverting to the same old libelous and anti-defamatory song he has proven the skeptics correct. Actually, I think you'll find that, rather than Carter's hatred for Israel being in his heart, it's a little lower down...in his wallet!!! Over the years, the Carter Center has been the recipient of a good deal of Saudi Arabian largesse... which, as you can imagine, would never have come without some very big strings attached.
