1. May He Be Blessed and His Memory Remain Forever in Our Heart
Meir Elazar   (04.01.10)
No words can adequately express the gratitude of all of us for whom he risked his life and paid with his life to save our loved ones. Raoul Wallenberg was a Giant amonst the Righteous Gentiles. May his Memory be Blessed and He Be forever on our list of Souls that we remember and Say Kaddish for.

4. The Russians could not believe Wallenberg's motivations
Joe ,   Canada   (04.01.10)
It is likely that the Russians could not imagine a Swedish diplomat to be acting for humanitarian reasons. After all no western country had shown any interest in rescuing Jews in 1938 at the Evian conference & nothing was done during the war to impede the Holocaust. And in the case of Sweden, the Russian could be suspicious of a diplomat whose country was a supplier of raw materials to the nazi's war industry. However, nothing excuses the way he was treated under Stalin & his successors & now it is unforgivable that the Russian authorities are still hiding the facts surrounding the fate of this hero so many years after WWII. What do they fear? All those guilty of mistreating Wallengerg are gone & can't be shamed if not punished. Did they commit such terrible things that they fear the shame could fall on the country?

The shame belongs mostly to the Swedish authorities at that time. Yes, Stalin's secret police executed Wallenberg on order from the Russian government so they share indeed in the shame. But the horrible fact is that our government made the execution inevitable when it refused to make a deal with the Russians or press on in Moscow for his release. "Not interested. As far as we know he is dead." Can anyone have any doubt about the consequences for Wallenberg of that message? It was his death sentence. In all probability he was executed shortly afterwards under strict secrecy as was necessary. He was as we know a diplomat from a neutral country. His remains cremated and the records cleaned. Why did the Swedish authorities act in this way? Gross incompetence and cowardness in front of Stalin and his henchmen? Maybe. Was he sacrificed on the altar of good relations with a Russia that Sweden indirectly had fought through Finland. We had been very supportive of the Finish war effort. In a way you could say that we fought Russia by proxy on the Eastern front. I don't think that Russia thought about us that we were strictly neutral. Was he abandoned because he belonged to the political right and labour had taken over the government after the war ended? He certainly not was their man. Was he left in the cold by a Foreign Office where he was a maverick, an intruder, forced upon them with American help? I don't think we ever will know the whole truth. It's buried deep both in Sweden and in Russia. But perhaps we will get to know a little more with the help of newly found evidence in Russia. And that is wellcome.
9. The Swedish complicity with Hitler and also their fear
Daniel ,   USA   (04.01.10)
not to insult the Russian speaks volume of the real nature of the Swedish governments. There is a national character to any land...and the ugly Swedish attitude toward Israel, the memorials to the Arab terrorists reflect the real nature of that state.

13. To # 9 Raul Wallenberg is a Swedish hero
Christian ,   Sweden   (04.02.10)
and we are proud of him. The memories of those who among us should have supported him but for whatever reasons failed in that are tainted for ever. But to badmouth our people and our history as contemptible does no honor to Raul and he should not have looked lightly on that. And our complicity with Hitler! Yes, we showed that by saving most of Denmark's Jews from ending in German camps. There is a lot more to be said here, but I will limit myself to say that to walk careful in a dangerous situation is to be prudent and not necessarily fearful.
14. At this time....
Chaim ,   Brooklyn Ny   (04.02.10)
Unfortunately, at this point it makes no difference how he died. it should just be noted that the Jewish nation NEVER forgets those who saved us! Raul Wallenberg, You will never be forgotten.

better resurrection, so there was more suffering for him in his life on this earth. I wish the Lord could have freed him; but the Lord did not deliver Isaiah or a lot of other saints, either. If Raoul Wallenberg had been freed, his sacrifices would not have burned so deeply in people's hearts to be remembered many decades later.
