1. Just fine the owner with a mega fine and be finished!
(04.04.10)
There is no relationship between this seller of hametz and the Mohicans! The Mohicans were an honorable race who respected traditions. This man is just an ignorant money hungry fool!
2. Rule of Law
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (04.04.10)
Strange that the extreme Leftists such as Livni and Barak are not calling for the YSM stormtroopers to destroy stores illegally displaying the Hametz. It seems that for the Left "rule of law" means laws are enforced only on their enemies.
3. The point of Israel is to allow any Jew to be religious as..
The Dude   (04.04.10)
he/she wants. It is not the responsibility of the state to enforce Jewish law on it's Jewish citizenry (or non-Jewish) for that matter. The reason for this is very simple. Look at Saudi Arabia or Iran where religion is literally forced down people's throats. When planes leave Riyadh the first thing Men do when they land is order Johnny Walker, and Women dress in mini-skirts. When people follow religious law on their own volition then it is indeed true belief. The fact is that while we are indeed the Jewish State, and the state does have a responsibility in ensuring that all Jewish citizenry can follow religious edicts, it should only create the infrastructure for such, not force its use.
4. For once, I agree with the Haredim !
Yisrael ,   Jerusalem, ISRAEL   (04.04.10)
5. haredim try breaking into restaurant selling chametz
dale cross ,   dead sea   (04.04.10)
who are these idiots .dont serve in the army ,dont work, bring their ten kids up on taxpayers money.what right do they have to dictate what the rest of us honest hardworking people can and can not do
6. At least one
marko ,   tel aviv   (04.04.10)
At least not all is lost in Jerusalem there is still one person who is willing to stand against religious onslought by the haradim
7. YES!
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.04.10)
Kol Hakavod to Avi Ben-David!! All the more strength to him.
8. Religious freedom?
Atheist Turk ,   Germany   (04.04.10)
Who gives the Haredim the right to "stop" other people by blocking doors etc.? A behaviour like this would have caused a public outcry among the secular Turks in Turkey. Radical Muslims try to stop groceries selling alcohol, but the secular community fights back succesfully. Every time this happens, Tukish media discusses, if the Iranian disease knocks the door. People like this cause lack of understanding in my godless head.
9. how absurd can you get...
anon ,   israel   (04.04.10)
...lets see, the restaurant owner is sticking his finger in judaism's eye by selling bread in jerusalem during passover, while raking in the cash - the haredim are exercising their freedom of speech by protesting, and restaurant owner then compares himself to the last member of a native american tribe that was ethnically cleansed...and then ynet prints his story and emphasizes the "martyrdom aspect" which enforces the negative stereotype about haredim to self-loathing jews and anti-semites worldwide... wow...what can i say?
10. Haredi coercion and violence
Madeleine ,   Israel   (04.04.10)
No-one is forcing these haredi to enter the restaurant, to eat or buy there. If it bothers them, they can cross the street, walk another route or just plain ignore it. They should put up or shut up.
11. "war on chametz in Jerusalem"
Sagi   (04.04.10)
One day war will be waged against these strange folk who think they can take the law into their own hands.
12. # 9 "freedom of speech"
Sagi   (04.04.10)
is not vandalizing another's property. Talking about freedom, nobody, including the bearded wonders, has the right to tell others what to do. Freedom is the highest value to which man can aspire. It transcends and supercedes all else. This is the basic reason why countries and Peoples who "worship" freedom are successful and those who "worship" idols are categorized as "third world".
13. :: The Jewish Taliban Strike Again
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (04.04.10)
Another example of the rampant violent religious intolerance within the ultra-Orthodox community. These nutters are no different from the Afghan Taliban who try and force/impose 'their' religious belief system on others.
14. Ironically, Saudi and Israel have much in common!
Nour ,   Palestine فلسطين   (04.04.10)
In Saudi you get harassed for playing music in a shop during salah. The authorities also crack down on florists who sell red roses on Valentine's Day. Israel and Saudi are both pathetic countries deserving a strong international condemnation! What happened to personal freedoms? The Palestinian capital of Al-Quds will certainly not allow this charade, especially that Dr.'s Fayyad unilateral statehood plan made it clear about personal freedoms! Read Abbas' statement of yesterday also...READ...PERSONAL FREEDOMS above all. I suspect a good cocktail of BDS on Israel will soon show effectiveness in fighting this and other social injustices.
15. They are Tasty Burgers
Moti ,   Tel Aviv   (04.04.10)
Silly protest....these burgers are quite tasty....non-jews, and jews that don't practice should be welcome to eat there....regardless of lunatic haredim......
16. I wonder which group was being more antagonistic?
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.04.10)
17. chametz is my choice
Latrina Goldfarb ,   Thornhill, Canada   (04.04.10)
It's my choice at how observant I can be. The 70 Haredim who tried breaking into restaurant selling chametz should immediately be put into the IDF.
18. Israel is a JEWISH state and has laws as a JEWISH state.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (04.04.10)
Let this treif fool try to sell Torahs in iran and see what happens.
19. Freaks!
Michael Steiner ,   Bahrain   (04.04.10)
These loons with their fur hats and Yiddish should b**ger off back to a Polish shtetl. They are an anathema to a modern state such as Israel. Imagine if the Amish did this in America: FBI would lay a siege to their commune and go medieval on their spoiled, lazy, retrograde butts. These hoodlums should each be given a shovel and wheelbarrow, and made to build that wall along our border with Egypt. That would shut them up for a while.
20. chametz
Steve a ,   manchester england   (04.04.10)
Israel is supposed to be democracy. That means it's citizens can do whatever they like, provided it does not affect anyone else's rights. .If anyone wants to eat chametz during pesach then so what? It;s up to them. Presumably the Haredi want to turn Israel into a Jewish version of Iran.
21. Thanks for this article YNET! I just made an order
for support   (04.04.10)
hehe, I feel great. I just placed an order of chicken sandwitch + chips from Iwo burger to support the secular struggle in Jerusalem. I wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for YNET. so thanks! Anyone living in Jerusalem and who is against the haredi coercion, now's the time to act! We mustn't sit on the fence and watch or it'll be too late. Please make your contribution by placing an order. (I'm not related in any way to this burger bar, and have no motive other than wanting to support their justified cause).
22. haredim behaviour!!!
guille ,   kfar saba!!   (04.04.10)

23. Anon #9
Erik ,   Israel   (04.04.10)
Judaism doesn't have an "eye"; it isn't a living organism. It doesn't get offended. It doesn't break into stores, set garbage cans on fire or shove women to the back of the bus. People who adhere to Judaism can choose to be offended or simply ignore others who do not adhere to Judaism. The same goes for believers in Islam, Christianity, etc.
24. Madness! :(
Barry   (04.04.10)
Awww. That poor store owner...not! You reap what you sow.-can't you not sell bread for one freakin week??? You are in the holiest city in the world! Grow up or get out!
25. if we act and eat like goyim, why are we here?
Laura ,   Jerusalem Israel   (04.04.10)
What would it take to educate the Jewish nation of being Jewish? stop being proud of living like the goyim and live like a Jew.
26. Jerusalem for the REAL JEWS
Moshe ,   Israel   (04.04.10)
Jerusalem is the city for real Jews. If you want to violate Jewish law and sell chametz, then you are not a real Jew. You must go live elsewhere. Keep up the pressure until these violators of Jewish law are rooted out of Yerushalayim.
27. So why they don't
Yaara ,   Israel   (04.04.10)
protest at all Russian restaurants that sell pork in Israel and at all kibbutzim that grow pigs?
28. #26
P ,   Philadelphia   (04.04.10)
You are not the only one who gets to try to define what it means to be a "REAL JEW". I prefer the idea of a modern, intelligent people with a respect for learing and an understanding of the best and worst in humanity. The superstitious, intolerant, jingoist rubbish that these Charedim aspire to be is just embarassing!
29. bread
colin   (04.04.10)
Why do the resterant owners not hire a group of thugs to get rid of these haridi vermin??Let the thugs break bones extract eyes and send many to hospital NOBODY WANTS THIER RELIGIOUS BULLSHIT
30. well done to the resturant owners
Avi ,   Israel   (04.04.10)
well done to the resturant owners to stand up to these religious thugs who seem to think they are in Tehran. I will make a point of coming to the resturant next year as a mark of solidarlity and a stand to those who think they can dictate to others what to eat based on a religious belief that other people do not share.
