By dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the U.S. saved many more lives that would have been lost had the war drug on. The Japanese, with their particular code of honor in warfare, were not about to surrender. Even after the first bomb was dropped, they still didn't surrender, necessitating the dropping of the second bomb three days later. Also, you have to realize that Japan started hostilities with the U.S., not the other way around. If they had not attacked Pearl Harbor, the U.S. never would have dropped bombs on them and probably never would have gotten involved in WWII (and you might be speaking German today.) I don't mean to trivialize the deaths the occurred in Japan, but am just trying to give some perspective that is missing from your post.
