The only criteria considered is what this does to Barak's public image. Ashkenazi is a bit too capable and capable of independent thought for Barak's taste.

Of course Barak jealous of Gabi. Ashkenazi is ten times the man and leader and soldier. Barak is nothing more than a political hack and proves it by his "announcement". It also pits generals against each other for the position long before it is required. I don't see that as good for Israel or the IDF and I hope these good men do not rise to the bait.
