Relying on yourself does not mean putting yourself in voluntary isolation. Keep connections with every one who wants to be your friend, but do not expect that somebody else will love you more than you love yourselves. If you do not want to be pressured by every American President who suddenly feels the urge to live a mark in History by achieving peace in ME at Israel's expense then refuse American help completely and only enter the relationship as equal partners.
