31. Usually Jones A Man Of Few Words In Public
Armchair General ,   Wisconsin, USA   (04.27.10)
Scanning the mainstream press, Jones will answer "fine" to a question on how the relationship is between the US and Israel. That's all you can get out of him. The ADL is right. This man is the US national security advisor. Why would he tell a prepared lame joke about a Jewish storekeeper? Tone deaf.
32. The Obama administration's idea of an "expert"
Scott ,   USA   (04.27.10)
33. Simply amazing
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (04.27.10)
Here he violates US federal employment rules and makes joke about Jews, but since his boss is another anti-Semite nothing will happen. Any other federal employee would be fired for that. Why doesn't he ever make any jokes about Muslims? Maybe they would blow up over that?
34. Before dismissing it as harmless bad taste, we must learn...
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (04.27.10)
...whether Gen. Jones or his people was behind the abortive and sleazy Obama "Big Lie" campaign to try to claim that Israel's position was placing US troops at risk. Although Gen. Petraeus swiftly disavowed this and the Obama White House backed down, it now becomes important to see exactly who launched this sickening slander. If it was Jones, and it might have been, combined with this crude gaffe (which says something about the man, like Jesse Jackson's "Hymietown" crack) - he has to go. The journalism profession needs to chase this one down. They owe it to us all.
35. It was funny!
Ashbrook ,   Portland, OR USA   (04.27.10)
Come on...I've heard this joke before, and I'm sure it was told by a Jewish comedian (probably Henny Youngman) Was it stereotypic? Sure, but most humor is. There was absolutely nothing offensive about that joke! Many of our "Jewish-American leaders" must have lots of extra time on their hands...take Abe Foxman...please!
36. The joke was not offensive. In fact...
Jake ,   USA   (04.27.10)
I particularly liked the part when the Jew forgives the Afghan for the bad things the Afghan said about "his country". Sounds like James Jones is admitting that Israel is the national home of all Jews, even Afghan Jews. I thought the joke was funny, and I'd like to know which idiot was the first to report this NON-story.
37. the point is...
(04.27.10)
the Obama regime wouldn't dare tell a joke like this about ANY people except the Jews. That's why it's NOT funny...coming from them.
38. Humor is contextual. And Jones shouldn't tell such jokes.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (04.27.10)
A joke doesn't exist in isolation. Its humor and meaning varies according to who's telling it, who's listening, and where it's expressed. I encountered this joke on a Jewish site and found it funny, because in that context it means that, in the end, the Jew gets the best of his enemy. But Jones should not be telling such a joke. He has no credibility as a friend to Jews or to Israel, so from his mouth the joke has an entirely different meaning. He is an outsider telling an insider joke. And BTW, Gibbs is spinning this story. Even granting that the transcript was based on the prepared script, why was the *video* missing that introduction?
39. Big Deal !
Frank-el ,   Detroit USA   (04.27.10)
This is news? And #2, Jackie Mason is not a comedian any more - he is a hate spewing bigot who craps on his own country whenever it does not surrender itself to all things Jewish or Israeli. If anyone even came close to his hate speech in an anti-semetic way they'd be in jail. He needs to retire on his Bernie Madoff investments and put his replacement brain order in with the New Jersey rabbis.
40. chill people
Avi ,   Israel   (04.27.10)
Oh for crying out loud ! Its a joke, So what ! Chill
41. it was funny. And not anti-semitic
Golan ,   modiin   (04.27.10)
I read it and I saw it on Youtube. It was funny.
42. Probably heard the joke in Israel
ben yaakov ,   herzliya il   (04.27.10)
We tell these jokes all the time I don't doubt he just repeated it. But the joke doesn't deserve this sort of attention or demand action by Jewish leaders and it certainly doesn't require an apology.
43. "Fired"? Not in this administration that keeps humiliating
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (04.27.10)
the symbols of Jewish sovereignty in the Jewish people historic homeland; not in this administration that compares the Jewish Holocaust to the Arab-made situation in Gaza; not in this administration that tells Jews, only because they are Jewish, to refrain from residing in certain neighborhoods of their own city.
44. Stop being so sensitive!
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (04.27.10)
I've told that joke myself - numbers of times! The Taliban guy is the butt of the joke! Oy! Relax a bit!
45. Next, Jones should joke about the Blacks...
Brana Lobel ,   Israel   (04.27.10)
and they will get him fired.
46. to #40 I wonder if it was gay joke would you
ghostq   (04.27.10)
feel the same, just wondering where is the limit of sensitivities reach, cause comedian on tv can, people in the gov can't, cause thet would be inciting and hint for political policy mmm like the madox case.
47. Amazing to read some of the hyperventilating over...........
Cameron ,   USA   (04.27.10)
a damn joke. What a pack of thin-skinned prima donnas. Sensitive ye are!
48. All You Chillers, The Point Is...
Brana Lobel ,   Israel   (04.27.10)
not whether the joke is funny, not whether Jews tell the joke privately, not even whether it is a joke. The man is a public servant and his public remarks reflect the government. Everyone in public service knows this. When a person in his high position makes a derogatory statement, it reflects not only him but the position of the administration. Added to this is the fact that this man had a reputation as an antiSemite before Obama appointed him National Security Advisor. So no, this is not a "chill out" subject. To respond this way is like saying in 1933 that Hitler would just go away, or his mustache was funny. You need to get your heads out of the sand and understand public speeches, and any speech that gets press coverage is by definition public. Next, to tell a joke as an outsider that relys on stereotype of a group to that group is not simply a hostile act but a contemptuous one. Some posters have called him stupid, but I am sure he is not so in the sense of being unintelligent. I suggest that since he is in a position of power vis a vis the Jews he can be subtly threatening. Again, this is not a Hollywood roast where colleagues get together to rank on one another. If this joke had been about Blacks and watermelons, you would never have heard the end of it. The editing out of this remark is also indicative of the Obama administration, which speaks out of both sides of its mouth far more than previous administrations.
49. Did anyone hear the clip?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (04.27.10)
He said he "thinks the story is true". The really sad part is that the audience laughed and did not boo. If these are our "leaders" then we are in deep doo doo!
50. The new Glubb Pasha.
Uzziel   (04.27.10)
This guy is the new John Glubb Pasha of our days sent for an identical mission by the empire of our days.
51. I don't understand what is wrong with this
Vardina   (04.27.10)
joke. On the contrary: it shows how human those Jews were: instead of killing the Taliban devil they sent him back and force, hoping to get rid of him in a civilized way. We should be proud that this is how the world sees us, instead of spontaneously activating our counter attack instincts.
52. #47: I agree this time, but try to tell a joke
Vardina   (04.27.10)
about a Muslim and you you will have to run for your life.
53. While I'm willing to take the joke in stride...
Heather Czerniak ,   Milwaukee, USA   (04.27.10)
...it certainly reflects badly on the Obama Administration. Jews in Israel and the US now have no reason to believe Obama is sincere about its diplomatic relationship with Israel.
54. #48:You are too serious about a stupid
Vardina   (04.27.10)
joke. The man wanted to sound funny, with a keen sense of humor, but made a fool of himself instead. What's the big deal? Obama is making a bigger fool of himself by kissing Muslims' feet.
55. to #47 than y did he picked jews and
ghostq   (04.27.10)
not afrikan amerikan? or Indian oops sorry native amerikan, was it random I wonder, or is it Nobama administration behavior.
56. I think Obama should make the apology as well. After all, it
Steven Shank ,   Washington, DC USA   (04.27.10)
was one of his subordinates who has exhibited his negative attitude toward Jews. But Obama will not do so, having had the same feelings about Jews as well.
57. James Jones Joker
Bruria   (04.27.10)
It is not the joke itself, but rather the fact that he has shown a thorny side to Jews in the past. Like most things, it is the "intent", and each person is free to determine what his "intent" was.
58. PICK YOUR BATTLES...
SETTHERECORDSTRAIGHT   (04.27.10)
I think people need to stop being so touchy and pick their battles. Obviously this guy is NOT someone to be worried about in terms of our survival as a people and a joke is a joke - wasn't even in bad taste in my opinion. It was funny. There are people out there who really want to see us become extinct and i don't believe he is one of them. On the other hand, if it were a Black joke, he would have lost his job by now.
59. This may be a joke but also is so TRUE
Tos ,   US   (04.27.10)
It also speaks volume of Israel's tactis of deception since its inception mostly allowed, maintained and promoted by the US. Seemingly it's a new expression of guilt and a warning shot towards Israel to aknowlegde that with this new US administration, it's not business as usual anymore. But too bad Israel can't really make senseful interpretaion and see any further than just their own noise.
60. No. It wasn't funny.
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.27.10)
It was in incredibly poor taste. The fact that it was uttered by the National Security Advisor of the United States is damned scary. Sorry. Hello -- can we have a new National Security Advisor, please? Like, now? Before it's too late? Please?
