1. wrong before 67 there wasn't phone lines
ghostq   (04.29.10)
in many areas, 67 means nothing, cause back in those days one transmitor of small neighborhood too entire building, analogic system, there wasn't even electricity to gaza. someone so caught with propeganda they ignore facts. the only phone system belong to the British gov building in the refugee camp.
2. Upgrading networks to 3G - let me understand something
Talula ,   Israel   (04.29.10)
Not only do we have to supply them gas, water and electricity we have to upgrade their networks to 3G now? And where is all this money coming from to use 3G networks for voice and data? 3G networks need 3G phones - 3G phones don't come cheap - especially when there's no food on the table - or so we keep hearing.
3. mobile phones
jadejparker ,   us   (04.29.10)
Yes, that is right, Israel must pay for everything...gas, oil, electricity, new homes, water, sewer, schools, hospitals, agricultural renewal, new trees...Israel must pay because war criminals must pay reparations. And this is not incitement, slander or racist slur,it is the conviction of most people in the world.
4. The West Bank is Jewish land. The Palestinians are ingrates.
Jake ,   USA   (04.29.10)
Israel agrees to the idea of a Palestinian state, NOT because the land belongs to Arabs, but because annexing the land would pose a demographic threat to Israel - the only functioning democracy in the ME. The Palestinians need to stop acting as if they have ANY leverage, because they don't. They are being offered autonomy, in the form of an independent, demilitarized, land-locked state. They can take the generous offer, or perpetuate the status-quo until enough Jews move back home, and the demographic threat is neutralized. It's high time for Palestinians to face reality. Another 2 decades of the status quo, and Israel will simply annex the entire West Bank.
5. Paltel is milking the Palestinian Economy
Ali ,   Washington   (04.29.10)
FYI: A Land line served through Bezeq costs ~10c/min to call from the US. The exact same line/socket now under Paltel costs 28c/minute to call. Cell phones have similar markups too. Paltel is just another billing point along the way with no added value, other than it has the word Palestinian in it.
6. 90% of mobiles are israeli made!
(04.29.10)
7. #2: Talula you got it wrong
Rami of Nazareth ,   Israel   (04.29.10)
Palis are asking Israel to free the airwaves (or stop jamming them) so they can use them for their 3G network. Israel is doing them no favor and should not even have the right to prevent them
8. To 7 you have can have your own airwave...
The Dude   (04.29.10)
When stop using our currency! Seriously I am sick of this draining the Israeli market of shekels. The fact is that real moves for independence seem no where near in the future. But things like '3G' are at the top of the list...
9. I dont think either side understands the definition
Israeli   (04.29.10)
of colonialism or peace partner. They are taking their prejudices of one another and applying them to an unrelated issue.
10. ban cells altogether
OS   (04.29.10)
Why don't they ban cell phones completely - after all the technology is an Israeli invention. On the other hand - they are complaining that the Israeli companies don't pay the PA fees - what about all the things that we supply them with that they don't pay for at all. The only want to keep their population poor, ignorant and continue the tension and hatred. Some partners for peace.
11. They don't even need cell phones for donkey carts.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (04.30.10)
12. To Ali in Washington , you are ignornat of the facts
Ali ,   Jerusalem   (04.30.10)
I, like many others, use an Israeli cell phone, in addition to Jawwal. I will continue to do so as I need both. In reference to your ignorance of the extra charges, this is a market demand and supply issue. The Israeli economy is an industrialized economy with many lines/connections to the west which provides and extra supply of communications lines and lower cost for the consumer. The PA economy can't be compared to the Israeli economy, with limited communications lines and reliance on the Israelis for any communication to the outside world where each party has a markup fees and in turn the supply is not adequate for the demand or, demand isn't large enough to build additional infrastructure. However, over the years the fees have decreased as more demand is increased and infrastructure is built..
13. Correction: There are not 2.5M Palis in the WB
Eitan ,   Chicago   (04.30.10)
Straight from West Bank Wikipedia article: "In December 2007, an official Census conducted by the Palestinian Authority found that the Palestinian Arab population of the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) was 2,345,000.[27][28] However, the World Bank and American-Israeli Demographic Research Group identified a 32% discrepancy between first-grade enrollment statistics documented by the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS)’ 2007 projections,[29] with questions also raised about the PCBS’ growth assumptions for the period 1997-2003.[30] Several media outlets have suggested that PCBS data inflate the 2007 census figures by 30%, contradicting both the Palestinian Ministry of Education’s enrollment data and actual emigration growth documented by Israeli Border Police, which in 2006 observed 25,000 Palestinian Arabs emigrating from Palestinian Authority-controlled territories.[31] These data sets suggest that the Palestinian Arab population of the West Bank in 2007 was approximately 1.5 million." Reuters is garbage, and as the Russians say, you can't make candy from excrement, so don't take their wire stories as the gospel truth.
14. Simple solution
Clive ,   Karmiel, Israel   (04.30.10)
This is quite a mess because the Israeli operators use airwaves over the Palestinian areas in order to serve the settlers. The simple solution is for the Israeli operators to pay the taxes earned on the Palastinian calls to the PA. They could also share some part of the call fees with the Palastinian phone companies.
15. He ignores that Pal cell companies owned by PA stooges
William ,   Israel   (04.30.10)
What the PA is not saying is that they stand to lose a lot of money from this and are trying to enforce a communications blockade, which essentially is illegal. Every infrastructure company in the WB was given a license by the PA who receives much of the royalties, and most of the licenses were given to friends and business connections.
16. #3 - According to most polls, it's not
William ,   Israel   (04.30.10)
It's more of a conviction of rabid racists and blinded, self-righteous Leftists. There still hasn't been proof of Israeli war crimes, only a call for investigations. Apparently, you're so fixated on your own opinion you forgot the rule and process of law. No matter - both Hizbullah and Hamas have been fingered as war criminals - should they not start paying for some of the Israeli infrastructure due to their criminality, based on your logic? Even before the claim of "war crimes" was the claim of "Occupier" by the Left to place responsibility of the "Pals" daily lives on Israel's hands, yet they get upset when it extends to security and terrorists get arrested by the IDF. The bottom line is this - no matter what "independence" the "Palestinians" show or have, you will always make sure they stay your "welfare" children who can never take care of themselves. And that's a sad day for "Pals" if you ask me.
17. #7 - As sovereign State, Israel has full right to refuse
William ,   Israel   (04.30.10)
Each sovereign State can control the emissions both domestic or from neighboring areas that affect its communications. The PA is not even a sovereign area so technically, they don't have any right to dictate terms of their communications per the ITU treaties. Israel has full right to dictate the terms here, and can even shut down the Pally network if it chooses until the PA becomes a sovereign nation...if it ever does. And in that case, they must still work together on band-sharing agreements through the ITU. The Pals have no legal case here, except in the defunct "court of public opinion".
18. #12 - speaking of ignorance, Ali
William ,   Israel   (04.30.10)
The PA does not rely on communication channels through Israel. They go through Amman, Jordan. This is why they pay an extra tariff on their connected calls. However, Ali in DC is correct. The big issue here is not "economic colonialism" its about taxes that the PA wants for its already bloated, welfare govt.
19. #14 - Not so easy
William ,   Israel   (04.30.10)
While it is possible to pin-point the point of origin for a cell phone, it's not easy to make that determination when close to the green line where a person in the WB could hook up with a cell tower in Jerusalem. However, until the issue of sovereignty is actually finalized and "Pals" given a State, this is a moot point. Legally, Israel has full control over the airwaves of "Palestinian" populations. What I'd do is offer them 3G bandwidth, but take away their TV bandwidth and an end to their racist incitement that poisons their children's minds.
20. how about this idea
zionist forever   (04.30.10)
Jam all communications frequencies used by the palestinians. Without the cellphones the terrorists will have a much harder time organizing terror attacks. Modern terror groups rely on modern communications technology. Maybe we can even cut the landlines meaning they have not telephones at all or internet access. it will also send a message to palestinians they might have Obama on their side now but we don't have to send in the troops or even impose a siege to fight them. If there is ever a need for another Cast Lead destroy things like their electricity infastructure, jam all communications, block the import of fuel. Then they can live the way their ancestors did whose homes they have romantic ideas of returning to.
