1. hummus is not an Arab dish
soludo   (05.09.10)
It's been in the Near East and Middle East long before Arabs came there from Arabia. The only Arab thing about it is the name. As for tomato dishes like "tabbouleh" and the so-called "Arab salad" (tomatoes and cucumbers--nothing "Arab" about it), tomatoes were only brought to the Middle East in the early 19th century. These types of dishes were being consumed for centuries prior in Europe.
2. oh my...
john ,   t-a   (05.09.10)
can they do something better? Excel in science, research, human rights etc., they beat us at the useless size of the dish, golly , they must be so proud now. The irony is lost is on them, that their competitors are also Arabs of Lebanese decent, who are now Israelis and proud of it.
3. W Lebanon and its 10 tons humus record
Guido ,   Milano Italy   (05.09.10)
How wonderful it would be if all wars were about humus records. I wish this war doesn't stop, go on Israel, break the recod with a 15 tons humus achievement. And then go on Lebanon, don't give up, you are able to reach the 20 tons record... And so on, and so on, and so on.
4. new idea for world rekord
ghostq   (05.09.10)
marathon swiming in humus. it's only right and decent thing to do when you got tub full of humus.
5. to #3 just imagin how much "wind" they
ghostq   (05.09.10)

6. To John TA # 2
Anonymous ,   TX, USA   (05.09.10)
Of Course Lebanese are doing something else Ever since Kadmous was spreading the alphabet and discovering Africa. while Israelis were still goat-hearders. As for more recent times. Who do you think Heads Nasa's Head Propultion Laboratory??? And in Medicine, you would be an ignorant if you haven't heard of the late Dr. Dbaike. And haven't you heard of Dr Atala who is the pionneer in Articicial Bladder creation... How about Dr. Charles Malik, and his contribution to the Human Rights Charter...I can go on forever about Lebanese contribution to Human kind...
7. Lebanon is very Special and Israelis don't Get it to 2#
mohamad ,   USA   (05.09.10)
yes They can do something better..they already did; they quick the IDF from their land by force ( only several thousand fighters vs your mighty army with 6 billions annually from the USA) ..U used all kind of power in 2006 and the same fighters who defeated you in 2000 did the same in 2006 ... and this does not happen without science and education ... Do not underestimate Lebanon ... And John (#2) talk about Human Rights ..we have seen your humanity in Gaza .. Children dismembered, holes in their bodies and U ask about human rights in Lebanon .. . shame on you
8. Who is
Jul   (05.09.10)
eating all this hummus?
9. How silly both the Lebanese and Israelis are!
Yustinianos ,   thessaloniki   (05.09.10)
I mean who gives a damn about who made the biggest hummus dish. How stupid.
10. #7 You're full of hummus
Cynthia ,   USA   (05.09.10)
The War in Lebanon in '06 and War in Gaza in '08 were provoked by Iranian proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas. Go knock on Iran's door with your complaints. There were no winners. No doubt the Israelis and Lebanese could get along well without Islamic troublemakers.
11. great, now I'm hungry
roli ,   miami beach, USA   (05.09.10)
Abu Ghosh is the best, the most sachten in Judea county. That's not a real hummus plate, there's no garnish or pinenuts or tehina. Coll it called losing on a technicality; but sorry, hummus is fundamentalist, but it's a purists pursuit. BTW nice pottery, if they lend it to Israel we'll send them back some real good stuff. Or we can put it in a high tec plastic re-usable Sabra ware.
12. The Arabs are obviously the biggest innovators and inventors
Frank ,   USA   (05.09.10)
The biggest number of the Nobel prize winners comes from the 22 dictatorial Arab regimes. There GNP equals the USA and the per capita income exceeds the per capita in Israel. No woner they made the biggest hummus dish. If only they would produce the greatest chefs rather than the terrorists and pirates this planet would have been much happier.
13. Wow! Great achievement. We are impressed.
Victor ,   USA   (05.09.10)
Is there a world class university in Lebanon or anywhere in 22 Arab entities?
14. LOL!!
still laughing at #6 ,   not texas   (05.09.10)
oh yes, thats right, arabs have contributed far more to human-kind than jews... for example, look how many more arab nobel prize winners than jewish nobel prize winners (not talking about the political "peace" prize, talking about science, medicine, literature, mathematics, &tc..) LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get a life!!!
15. #6 Lebanese contributors
Igor ,   Germany   (05.09.10)
1) "Cadmus or Kadmos (Greek: Κάδμος), in Greek, Roman and Phoenician mythologies, was a Phoenician prince,[1] the son of king Agenor of Tyre and the brother of Phoenix, Cilix and Europa. He was originally sent by his royal parents to seek out and escort his sister Europa back to Tyre after she was abducted from the shores of Phoenicia by Zeus." [wikipedia] So you're claiming the Greek Gods (Zeus, Europa etc.) exist? Was Kadmos an Arab? Did he spread Arab alphabet? Why not? 2) Head Propultion Laboratory? Never heard. But it strikes my eye that Jet Propulsion Laboratory is located in the USA and its director has a very Christian name... 3) Dr. Dbaike? Never heard of him (nor has Google...) 4) Anthony Atala (yet another Christian) was born in Peru. Oh, I see, you mean "of Lebanese descent"! Then we are free to count every Jew, from Moses to Albert Einstein to Henry Kissinger to Paul Krugman (including even converts like Karl Marx) as Israelis...(?) 5) Charles Malik: By the same token you can count Ahmadinejad as a great contributor to Women Rights.
16. ANSWERS to all the ignorants in here
Elie ,   beirut   (05.09.10)
#13 : Is there a world class university in lebanon? --- American University of Beirut, functioning under a charter from the State of New York, and whose Faculty of Health Sciences’ Graduate Public Health program became the first such program to be accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) outside of North America, and Saint-Joseph University, with diplomas recognized in almost all the european countries and whose best students receive free education in france and belgium, AND MANY MORE. we have the best universities in the middle east.. next time please do some research before spreading ignorant lies #14 = your comment makes no sense : first of all, most lebanese arent even arabs, but from phoenician descent, and "arabs won more nobel prices than jews" wasnt what #6 was trying to prove, he was just mentioning some contributions of the lebanese in science and medecine around the world it seems to me that u people just cant enjoy this non military war... do u prefer katyushas or hummus plates? lets just have some fun in this war that doesnt implicate fearing for our lives... its just a way to bring our cultures closer together! y so much hate? peace from beirut

Igor ,   Germany   (05.09.10)
"first of all, most lebanese arent even arabs, but from phoenician descent" --So we can agree that hummus is not an Arab dish.(?) BTW., most of so-called "Arabs" outside Arab peninsula---including the "Palestinians"---are "not Arabs", but of a different descent: Jewisch, Canaanite, Berber... Interestingly, the real Arabs inside Israel---the Beduins---are loyal Israeli citizens...
18. #16 Elie, Beirut
Faruq   (05.09.10)
You said ''most lebanese arent even arabs, but from phoenician descent'' This is not true at all, not one bit. The original phonecians are long gone, Lebanese are arabs - everything about them is arab and they identify as arabs/
19. Anonymous @ 6, that alphabet thing, those were Phoenicians.
leo ,   usa   (05.09.10)
Do not confuse them with Arab occupants of today's Lebanon.
20. Anonymous @ 6, did noy notice one commonality in the
leo ,   usa   (05.09.10)
rest of your cases? For Lebanese to excel in anything like art, science and business he or she has to be taken out of their original environment. It tells you something, doesn't it.
21. Yustinianos @ 9, you are right.
leo ,   usa   (05.09.10)
Compared to events in Greece this hummus contest is complete nonsense.
22. This is the best kind of "war' to have:
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (05.09.10)
Readers -- lighten up! My only problem is that I'm not allowed in Lebanon to taste these dishes. And next, let's establish a "war" with Lebanon over who has the best universities.
23. These huge hummus plates will be so massive that they'll
create a black hole   (05.10.10)
that will devour the entire earth. No but seriously, isn't it time to put an end to this. I'm sure most of this hummus is thrown to the garbage. Seems like such a waste. I wished they gave the hummus to poor people to eat so that it won't be such a waste of food.
24. to #20
Elie ,   beirut   (05.10.10)
VERY interesting comment... but unfortunately, the reason for this is because war and sectarian division has been imposed on us for decades now, and has disabled us from advancing in our own country... liberate lebanon from iranian, syrian, french, saudi and american interests, and i promise u, lebanon will flourish again... (i doubt that will happen anytime soon, which makes ur comment general truth)
25. No. 15 Igor
NYC Girl   (05.10.10)
In regard to your point number 3, the doctor's name is Michael DeBakey. But he was an American of Lebanese descent, and therefore it's arguable as to whether he would have achieved the same notoriety if he hadn't had access to American schools and medical facilities.
26. I pray for the day, that all the wars would be like this one
whoever ,   wherever   (05.10.10)
I pray for the day
27. to 16# how you identify yourself? Phoenician
mouhamad ,   USA   (05.10.10)
and How would you identify yourslef ...are you phoenician or Arab ? it is sign of Defeat when people missidentify themself ..so be true to yourself and reconcile with your identity .if you don't like being arab then change what you don't like in arabs rather then creating a fake identity and then people will accept your say " peace from beirut" .
28. Do the rockets hidden underneath factor in the weight??
KACH 613 ,   Judah, Israel   (05.10.10)

mark ,   ca   (05.10.10)
You should worry about your country. This is really stupid.
30. Elie @ 24, as much as I might sympathize with the plight
leo ,   usa   (05.10.10)
of your people Lebanese are the only ones who can help themselves. BTW, what is true for Lebanon (arts, science, business, etc ...) is true for the rest of the Arab world. I suggest, you forgo excuses and do something about it instead.
