1. To keep readers informed: Hesder
Michael ,   Toronto   (05.13.10)
There are many Hesder yeshivot that combine Army and Yeshiva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesder). Officially they are a five year program with a year and a half of army; however, many intentionally go to Hesder in order to be in yeshiva for the first two years, but to leave and do three years of army afterward. One thing that should be emphasized is that basically everyone in Hesder goes to combat units; whereas a large amount of the population goes to non-combat "jobnick" positions. If you are between 18-25, and are planning to learn in Israel you can go to a Hesder overseas program. Here's a list: http://www.torahandisrael.com/programs.html#men The smaller ones (<200) will even let you apply late, you just need to email them.
