There is a strong pattern of cultural acceptance to certain crimes against women and children in many Muslim countries. Until the culture finds this unacceptable, the acts of violence will be supported. In the USA, men kill their wives for all kinds of reasons every day, but our culture views these acts as unacceptable-no matter the reason-be it infildelity, abandoment, etc. There is no act short of murder can one commit that will beget murder and even that is argued as wrong. The real problem is accountability. Will this man truly be brought to justice? Who will raise the children? The dad's family, not the mom's. What will that family tell those children? That there dad did right by God and their mom was not worthy of him. My kids were kidnapped by their dad--he left the laws of the USA that protected them and me and took them to Palestinian camps under Muslin law where he had all the power. Women have NO rights in Muslim countries. If they try to divorce an abusive husband, their children have to go to the dad and a wife is not allowed to leave the country without his approval. Men need to lose their power over women in these countries by having equal and fair laws for both sexes. Its nothing different than what slavery was in the USA. Give women the right to divorce abusive husbands and raise their own children--and set up laws to protect them--- then you will find a very different kind of thinking in the Middle East.

I remember having a discussion some years ago with my father about the reasons the Islamic lands seem so troubled & dysfunctional in our times, and he held that the answer & true key to transforming the Islamic world towards a healthier, happier reality lay within Muslim women. That increasing the educational and economic power of Islamic women would, without fail, begin to seriously steer Islamic culture away from it's tribal and ultra-patriarchal values, and tendency towards violence that often borders on the irrational. A powerful argument, and one of the deep, 'unspoken' reasons (so I believe) why Muslim culture lashes out so against the standards, and modernism of the West.

She told me once that she was the property of her father until she married, then she became the property of her husband. Should her husband die before her, she will become the property of her son. How does one go about fixing a mindset? These are the same people that consider so-called "honor" killings to be necessary and appropriate. I just don't understand.

What you should say is that according to quran a muslim goes to hell if he kills a "virgin" girl. That's why many girls are raped first before they are killed. This is well-documented about the executions of political prisoners in Iran. A girl suspected of being a virgin is first raped by prison guards (mock islamic marriage ceremony performed to make it legal in the eyes of their god) and then she's executed.

But until the women in this culture stand up to these injustices and start fighting for their own rights nothing will change. We, who are not associated with this twisted belief and ways of oppression can get as angry and upset and say whatever we want to express our disapproval but until the women trapped in these situations decide to stand up and demand equal treatment and justice and respect for their value from the men of their own society i’m afraid nothing will change. They must make the demands for their own freedom. It’s all up to them.

He should have strangled himself as it's his sperm that determined gender of the child. I hope he is punished in the same way he murdered his wife and child.
