3. Boxing the greatest sport in the world
Al   (05.26.10)
Its a dance and the athletes are incredible. Too bad todays Jews are so weak...70 -80 years ago it was a Jewish sport. Here in Montreal, a boxing town we used to field quite a number of Jewish boxers. I am talking 80 years ago. In fact the local YMHA was front row and centre in helping to promote the sport at that time.
4. it's not about winning or losing
roli ,   miami beach, USA   (05.26.10)
it's about righteousness and settling a dispute that Cotto believes he can defeat the champion. Brooklyn, don't worry, neither of them are going to get owned. Sotto will be going to the shop, the pawn shop, that is. Yuri will place him in a lower division before the 8th round. A TKO would be a mitzvah.
5. No. 3 Al
NYC Girl   (05.27.10)
It's an interesting cultural phenomena because you're absolutely right that at one time Jews were heavily represented in boxing. The problem is those same tough prizefighters who weren't afraid of going into the ring and getting the crap beaten out of them, raised a generation of kids who went to Ivy League schools...and the closest they ever get to boxing is as sportscasters, attorneys or accountants.
6. Al, both my Dad and uncle were boxers
Judah ,   Golan Heights,ISRAEL   (05.27.10)
Growing up in Canada during the depression both my Dad and my uncle took up boxing. They fought both amateur and later professional. Their careers ended when they were drafted into the Army during WW2. My Dad says that when he visits Israel and sees the young Israeli soldiers then he gets the same sense of pride that the Jewish boxers once gave him. The best boxer my Dad ever saw as a child was the great Benny Leonard.
7. Judah I know an old boxer in Montreal
Al   (05.27.10)
a Jewish guy who calls himself Benny. Well I met him at shul one day(I've seen him around forever) and mentioned that my kid at the time was into Boxing and training at the TriStar gym here in Monrtreal where the MMA champ George St-Pierre used to train. By the way GSP used to train at the local YMHA as well..they have the best local facilities for MMA. Well Benny being an old fighter and kidder told me ,"listen kid I'll give you a little LOVE TAP just to show I still have it". I am not kidding I have a sore upper arm for three days, and I'm not a small guy. What a guy..what a fighter! I wouldnt say that about some nebech Accountant or shmengy Dentist.
