It was also blatently obvious that Israel wouldn't be able to just sit back and do nothing as cities with chimical plants in them get direct hits and would have to do something to put a stop to it - seeing as the IDF would no longer be present there and no longer able to conduct small-scale persutes of the terrorists responsible - the only options would be either A. a reinvasion or - B. one massive, bloody attack in an area which is now unfamiliar (which only means sloppier fighting with more civilian casualties). And not only regulat foreign aid through normal legislative channels. There are also loans, the repayment for which are routinely forgiven by Congress. And the fact that donations to Israeli 'charities' funding illegal settlements in the West Bank in direct cointravention of stated US policy, are tax-deductible.

A deep change in the way hasbarah is made, both by civilian and military officers, is very long overdue. I take, as an example, what happens here in Brazil: our Jewish community provides most of the Hasbarah efforts and means in the media, in the universities etc etc. I'm no expert in the subject, but surely there's margin for substantial changes. As Diaspora communities decline both in numbers and in commitment toward Israel, the day will come in which Israelis will have to make their case without the leverage of the Jewish communities - and it will be even more difficult to do because of the relentless growth of Muslim communities both in Europe and in the Americas. It is high time for Israel to use our famed yiddish kop and to engage in a new and fresh way of making Hasbarah. It is a waste of money; on the contrary, it is simply essential for the country's standing in the medium- and long term.
